Important: Cruz edges Trump in Iowa caucuses; Rubio finishes strong third
First thoughts. The tie between Hillary and Bernie is good for Republicans. Let the bloodletting begin. As expected, Trump claims a win, as he'd do if he finished last, but he was soundly beaten by Cruz and barely edged my preferred candidate Rubio, but a point. This is a win for Rubio, given a short while ago he was at 10%. Note that over 60% of Iowa Republicans, in a 91% white state, voted for one of the minority candidates (two Hispanics and a Black guy), while 100% of Democrats voted for an old white person. On the other hand, if you add the Clinton, Sanders and Trump votes, clearly a majority for progressive principles. I think that after New Hampshire there will only be three, maybe four Republicans still in the race. ~Bob. Your post illustrates that all the hoopla over the decline of whites may be a little overstated... Cruz and Rubio,  don't look much different than Mayflower descendants, and their policy positions are much closer to the principles of the founding generation that that of many actual Mayflower descendants. --Chuck

Book Recommendation: Amistad - A Novel by David Pesci
There are several histories of the slave uprising on the Spanish slave ship Amistad. I happened to be given this novel, which I though was fairly well written and stayed close to the facts, though I have not read the histories. It came out in 1997, the same year as the movie. The story is now well known, a group of Africans had been seized and sold by black slave traders to illegal Spanish slavers. They were resold in Cuba and put on the Amistad for further sale down island. They seized control of the ship, but were soon captured by an American Warship, which sailed them to Connecticut, where slavery was legal, hoping for salvage rights to ship, cargo and "slaves." Their case was taken up by abolitionists. The government was in the hands of Martin Van Buren and pro-slavery Democrats who wanted the case to go away before the November, 1840 election (which Harrison won, defeating Van Buren). The case was fought all the way to the Supreme Court, so it is an action drama and a courtroom drama. I found it worth reading.

Must Read: Our Gallant Allies, the Kurds (and Other Fairy Tales). By Tom Kratman
http://www.everyjoe.com/2016/02/01/politics/our-gallant-allies-the-kurds-other-fairy-tales/#1
Excerpt: One of the attendees had brought with him a book3 detailing the results of the chemical attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja by the army and air force of Saddam Hussein. It was really heartbreaking, all those picture of gassed, dead, discolored, and decomposing Kurdish kids, who are, in fact, every bit as cute as the papers and television made them out to be.4 At least when they’re not dead they are. My team sergeant, Sig, and I were duly appalled and sickened. The Arabs, though, didn’t seem to understand. To paraphrase, “What’s the problem? Don’t you understand that these were Kurds who got gassed?” At the time, I found that attitude completely inexplicable. Fast forward a few months; we’ve incited the Kurds and Shia to rise up and overthrow Saddam. They didn’t, of course, while such an uprising would have looked difficult and might have done us some good.5 Oh, no; instead the Shia – whose rebellion was spontaneous, anyway – waited until it looked like the Iraqi Army was crushed and such an uprising would be easy. The Kurds – who were organized – waited even longer. Sorry, boys, but when we offer you a quid pro quo, that doesn’t translate into “free lunch.” Moreover, when we’ve already offered someone a cease-fire it’s a bit late to try to get us to start hostilities again.6 In short, we owed them nothing. (Tom Kratman is a retired USA LtCol, an occasional contributor to this blog, and an outstand author of military science fiction, including the A Desert Called Peace series. http://www.amazon.com/Desert-Called-Peace-Carrera-Book-ebook/dp/B00B5HJOFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426715332&sr=8-1&keywords=Peace+Kratman I expect that in 20 years they will move his novel Caliphate to the history section. ~Bob)

Interesting: Clinton declares narrow Iowa victory even as final tally counted in deadheat with Sanders
Excerpt: Even if Clinton ends up on top — as her campaign believes — the close contest in Iowa confirms that Sanders’s anti-establishment message has real muscle and appeal. While a narrow victory for the former secretary of state would make good on nearly a year of dutiful campaigning and heavy investment in Iowa, it would also leave residual doubts about her weaknesses among Democratic voters. (I still think the moneyed elites will prevail and Clinton will be the nominee, unless the Obama DOJ should indict her, which I rate a vanishingly small chance, no matter what the FBI finds. ~Bob)

Interesting: Winners and Losers from the Iowa caucuses. By Chris Cillizza, Washington Post
Excerpt: Winners... • Marco Rubio: The senator from Florida emerged — as many expected — as the strongest establishment candidate in the GOP field. But he made a strong run at Trump for second place, an unimaginable result even a week ago. As important for Rubio, he was the top GOP candidate among people who made up their minds in the past week. That strong closing kick positions Rubio well for the next eight-day sprint between Iowa and New Hampshire — particularly given Trump's disappointing showing, which could well bring the real estate mogul's numbers in the Granite State back down to earth. Rubio is likely to benefit from a push by the party establishment — read: major donors — to get some of the other establishment candidates out of the race. If it doesn't happen before New Hampshire, a second strong Rubio showing in the first-in-the-nation primary could well force it.

Marco Rubio and Bernie Sanders were the real winners in Iowa. By Ruth Marcus, Washington Post
Excerpt: Still, the race for the top spot was not the big news of the night. The real winners were Marco Rubio, with his remarkably strong third-place showing, and Bernie Sanders, with his virtual tie. In the short term, Donald Trump was the biggest loser — true of any front-runner but even truer of a candidate whose campaign raison d’etre is that he is a winner.

Excerpt: Despite its best attempts to fail, the biggest winner of the Iowa Caucus last night was the GOP itself, which generated an unprecedented level of energy and engagement among voters in a critical swing state.  That energy was generated thanks to a group of leading candidates who actually appealed to the GOP’s grassroots voter base. Turnout was more than 186,000, more than 50 percent higher than any Iowa GOP Caucus in history, and 46 percent of those were first time caucus attendees. And this turnout boom can’t be all chalked up the “Trump Effect”.  Even if every Trump voter had stayed home, turnout for the remaining candidates would have still been more than 15 percent higher than it had been at any previous caucus.  That’s remarkable.

Sen. Tim Scott Expected To Endorse Rubio

Worth Reading: Trump fever has broken. Cruz out-organized him. Here's what's next. By William Whalen
Excerpt: Mister Trump, Meet Mister Tyson. The former boxer is credited with saying that “everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth.” On Monday night, Trump was on the receiving end of said punch. Yes, the turnout turned out to be a record high, as Trump had promised. But not all the newcomers flocked in his direction, as he also prophesized. According to Fox News entrance polls, the late-deciders broke first to Marco Rubio, then Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and then Trump – one reason why Rubio finished a close third (much closer than expected) to the flamboyant developer.

Must Read: Grow Up! By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: Of all the many things said about Donald Trump, what was said by Roger Ailes, head of the Fox News Channel, said it all in just two words: "Grow up!" It is amazing how many people have been oblivious to this middle-aged man's spoiled brat behavior, his childish boastfulness about things he says he is going to do, and his petulant response to every criticism with ad hominem replies. He has boasted that his followers would stick by him even if he committed murder. But is that something to boast about? Is it not an insult to his followers, if it is true? Moreover, his cockiness is misplaced, because he still does not have a majority among Republican voters, while you need a majority of all the voters to win any state in the general election.

Worth Reading: Donald Trump’s Art of the Fail. Even if he loses at the polls, Trump will call it a win. It’s what he’s always done.
Excerpt: Over these last 40 lime-lighted years, Trump has won a lot, but he has lost a lot, too—four corporate bankruptcies, two failed marriages and a vast array of money-squandering business ventures. He lost his signature Trump Shuttle airline to his lenders. His self-branded casinos in Atlantic City struggled consistently to turn profits. In each case, though, he has heeded a form of the advice he gave that day to Sprague: Never acknowledge failure. Never admit defeat.

Interesting: The End Comes Soon for Trump. By Leon H. Wolf
Excerpt: A little noticed event earlier this week brought ominous tidings to the Trump 2016 campaign, which spent most of the summer riding high on a wave of triumphalism and defiance against the GOP establishment machine. Donald Trump held a campaign event in Iowa, and CNN didn’t even acknowledge that it was happening. Indeed, while the assembled crowd waited to hear the latest Trump Brand Pablum in person, even CNN’s chryon blared on about the huge crowds that were at that moment being drawn by … Bernie Sanders. This seems like such a small and insignificant thing – but only to those who have not been following the extent to which the cable networks have given Trump virtually unadulterated free coverage in exchange for the ratings boost that even mentioning Trump brought. (Wishful thinking? ~Bob)

Must Read: Donald Trump is a fraud: Report confirms the billionaire’s presidential bid is a long and calculated con job
Excerpt: He can offend anyone, promise anything, and circumnavigate the entire process without ever having to apologize. Not apologizing, as the Politico writers note, only bolsters "a candidate who appeals to voters fed up with political correctness and establishment niceties." It also forces the other candidates to play his game, to react to the tone he sets and the issues he raises. (...) If he does believe something he says, it’s a happy coincidence, because his campaign is an experiment in modern marketing, not an expression of his political worldview. (Salon, like Politico, leans left, I believe. That doesn’t mean they’re wrong. This article says EVERYTHING I’ve been afraid of since Trump first announced. Every word makes perfect sense–which doesn’t mean it’s correct, just that it’s believable. I think it fits the man’s character perfectly. --Ron P.)

Worth Subscribing To: The Trump fans have an accurate diagnosis and an awful choice in recommended medicine. By Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt
Excerpt: One of the reasons you have this party-threatening disagreement between the pro-Trump and anti-Trump wings of the conservative movement is that those of us who oppose Trump see him as the antithesis as everything the pro-Trump crowd claims they want.  They claim to be upset about “political correctness”, but turn to the guy who criticized Pamela Geller for being too provocative after jihadists shot at her. He walked away from the debate after a press release was too “nasty.” He called for the Federal Communications Commission to fine Rich Lowry and ban him from television for using the word “balls.” He called for Jonah to resign over a tweet Trump deemed “sexist”. Trump will stand up for his right to be politically incorrect, but not yours or anybody else’s. Sure, Trump will feature preteen cheerleaders singing about him -- “deal from strength or get crushed” -- hey, remember when we laughed at the cult of personality around Obama? Pyongyang called, they said the musical number was “a little over the top” -- but if you want a “moderately traditionalist” American culture, you don’t call the guy who told Miley Cyrus he loved her infamously vulgar performance at the MTV Music Video Awards, and dismissed her critics as “jealous.” They’re upset about crony capitalism, and they turn to the guy who boasts about how politicians grovel for his donations.

32 reasons a Trump presidency would be a catastrophe for America.

Donald Trump is the Mussolini of America with double the vulgarity. Republicans are right to fear demagoguery of the one candidate who makes Hillary Clinton look electable

Hillary Clinton and the Criminalization of America
Excerpt: The continued expansion of Hillary Clinton's email scandal -- now with 22 emails from her personal server deemed too classified for public view, even in redacted form -- is making Watergate seem like a shoplifting episode at a 7-Eleven. Emailgate is far worse.  It's now clear it involves the potential endangerment of human lives (our lives and those of our friends) across the globe and the national security of the United States and undoubtedly the free world. (Watched a clip of HC on news the other night saying her emails contained nothing secret and the entire time, she was shaking her head "no" while obviously lying.  But to be fair, America criminalized by others, long before this election. --Barb)

From the Left: How Iowa went wrong for Hillary Clinton. Her vaunted field organization performed as expected. But she didn't. By Glenn Thrush and Annie Karni, Politico
Excerpt: Iowa wasn’t just supposed to be a tentative first step in Clinton’s inevitable march to the Democratic nomination, it was meant to be the cornerstone of a rebuilt political persona – and her national team was built from Iowa outward, with a foundational goal of winning here, and winning big. But nothing is ever easy with Hillary Clinton – especially not here - and her inability to ride a first-class ground organization to a decisive triumph underscores the candidate’s weakness and the lack of a message that resonates with primary voters. For months, the Republican side of the aisle has been filled with drama and uncertainty – yet in the end it was a 74-year-old, wild-haired democratic socialist who has muddied a contest that was supposed to be predictable.

... The Soros donation was given to Priorities USA Action, a Clinton-alligned super PAC. ... The $6 million check from the billionaire follows a $1 million donation he previously gave the group and another $1 million donation to another pro-Clinton super PAC American Bridge 21st Century, bringing the billionaire’s total to $8 million given to help elect Hillary Clinton.  Just under two weeks ago, Clinton condemned “big-money donors” in politics and pledged to overturn the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court.

Interesting: Bernie Sanders failed to act in deadly VA scandal, whistleblower says. By M.D. Kittle
Excerpt: Uber-liberal presidential candidate Bernie Sanders aims to take Iowa on Monday night in the nation’s kick-off caucuses, in part with a pledge to take care of America’s veterans. ... But the senator’s staff did nothing with detailed reports of myriad abuses going on for years at the Tomah Veteran Affairs Medical Center, according to whistleblower Ryan Honl.

Mystery Surrounds West Coast Arrival of Zika-Spreading Mosquito

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/01/29/mystery-surrounds-west-coast-arrival-of-zika-spreading-mosquito/

Excerpt: Meet the Aedes aegypti, a tiny blood-sucking mosquito that is causing panic worldwide for its ability to transmit the Zika virus and a host of other diseases that have recently surfaced in the U.S. The mosquito, on the decline since the 1980s in Southern Florida, suddenly surfaced in California under unknown circumstances in 2013. That year saw a major spike of illegal immigration from Mexico and Central America, where the Aedes aegypti has been spreading dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses that have become pandemic in those regions. The Aedes aegypti, commonly referred to as the yellow fever mosquito, is recognizable by white markings on its legs and a lyre marking on the insect’s thorax.

Interesting: We live in a two party duopoly. Here’s how Bloomberg or Webb might break it. By Morris Fiorina
Excerpt: Public opinion research has repeatedly found that on many issues the electorate is between the two parties.  On abortion, for example, 80 percent or more of the electorate would prefer something between the “never, no exceptions” platform of the Republicans, and the “anytime, for any reason” position of the Democrats.

Worth Reading: California of the Dark Ages. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: I recently took a few road trips longitudinally and latitudinally across California. The state bears little to no resemblance to what I was born into. In a word, it is now a medieval place of lords and peasants—and few in between. Or rather, as I gazed out on the California Aqueduct, the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Luis Reservoir, I realized we are like the hapless, squatter Greeks of the Dark Ages, who could not figure out who those mythical Mycenaean lords were that built huge projects still standing in their midst, long after Lord Ajax and King Odysseus disappeared into exaggeration and myth. Henry Huntington built the entire Big Creek Hydroelectric Project in the time it took our generation to go to three hearings on a proposed dam.

Unfortunately, the acknowledged debt is the smaller part of the problem; there is also the unfunded liability. That is money the government has promised to pay but does not have in the bank for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, etc. It's not considered "debt" because it's not owed by contract; the government can cancel it, creating chaos and "civil unrest." I've read estimates that range from $87T to $240T, depending on who is counting, what is counted and what period is projected. Google, "The West and the Tyranny of Public Debt" from Newsweek. Of course, as a liberal friend said, the "government can always print more money." This is why you can buy a billion dollars in Zimbabwe currency on eBay for about $8. ~Bob

Obamacare Enrollment Has Tapped Out. By Sally Pipes
Excerpt: It’s all a lot of hot air. Enrollment in Obamacare’s exchanges is virtually stagnant, as both the young and the middle class have continued to spurn the overpriced plans on offer. The Congressional Budget Office originally predicted that 21 million Americans would enroll in plans through Obamacare’s exchanges this year. As of late January, enrollment nationwide was 11.5 million, with 2.7 million coming from state exchanges. The number of people who have signed up isn’t just below the CBO’s forecasts — it’s lower than the 11.7 million who had signed up by the end of open enrollment last year.

Worth Reading: China’s Ascendance To The Position Of Chief Adversary. By Miles Maochun Yu
Excerpt: There is no denying that both Russia and China harbor significant hostility toward the United States, albeit for very different reasons. But the degree to which Moscow and Beijing can transfer their respective antagonism into actual harm against the U.S. is dramatically different. First of all, China’s economy is four times larger than Russia’s, in terms of conventional GDP. If one uses the more accurate Purchasing Power Parity [PPP] method, China’s GDP is five times greater than Russia’s—$12.26 trillion for China and $2.49 trillion for Russia. In addition, China holds the world’s largest currency reserve, estimated at over $3 trillion (again, almost four times the size of Russia’s reserves). With that kind of economic muscle, China has outspent Russia on defense by more than a ratio of 2:1, and China has been increasing its defense budget by double digits on a yearly basis for the past 25 years. In fact, Russia’s military power is weakening in relative terms while China’s is strengthening rapidly, making Russia a junior partner in the Sino-Russian bilateral military and economic relationship.

Always worth reading: Random Thoughts. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: Will this November's presidential election come down to a choice between a felon and a pied piper? - People who call Barack Obama a lame duck president seem not to have noticed that he is exercising more power than ever, and has turned the Republican Congress into a lame duck branch of government. - The best New Year's Resolution I ever made was to stop trying to reason with unreasonable people. That may be especially valuable during an election year. - With 4 of the 9 Supreme Court justices being more than 75 years old, the next president will probably be appointing replacements who can help determine the direction of American law well into the next generation. This is just one of the many very serious things that we can only hope the voters keep in mind, instead of voting on the basis of just one issue or on emotions.

Worth Reading: Almost Everything You've Been Told About Inequality Is Wrong. By John Goodman
Excerpt: Inequality was the single most popular topic when economists gathered at their annual convention in San Francisco last month. But here is what everyone should know. Most of the studies you read about in newspapers are flawed. A new study exposes those flaws and presents a much rosier picture of the American economy. (Full disclosure: I provided early funding for this study in a previous job.) A typical study of the distribution of income compares people on the top and bottom rungs of the income ladder. The problem: the entire population is on the ladder. That means these studies are comparing retirees with people who are working. They are comparing people who are at the peak of their career earnings with people who are just starting out. Studies of the distribution of wealth typically have an even bigger problem. They count private savings (such as an IRA or 401(k) account) and private pensions as part of an individual’s wealth. But they ignore Social Security and other entitlement benefits, even though people pay taxes to these programs at the same time they are contributing to their private retirement accounts.

EXCLUSIVE: Secret Fed Docs Show Obama Misled Congress, Public During Debt Limit Crises
Excerpt: Federal Reserve Bank of New York officials secretly conducted real-time exercises during the 2011 and 2013 debt-limit crisis that demonstrated the federal government could function during a temporary shutdown by prioritizing spending, even as Treasury Secretary Jack Lew publicly claimed many times that such efforts were “unworkable,” according to a new report by the House Financial Services Committee obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. The staff report, to be released Tuesday, charges that Lew and other Obama administration officials deliberately misled Congress and the public during the federal budget and debt limit showdowns in both years. Campaigning on terror. By Mindy Belz
Excerpt: Sen. Rubio of all the GOP candidates has gone to greatest lengths to lay out his foreign policy. In an essay in Foreign Affairs, he wrote it will “take years” for the next president to counter the “residual effects” of Obama’s foreign and defense policies. He argues for building up U.S. military forces to counter ISIS and for negotiations with rogue states like Iran or Russia only from a position of flexing U.S. military might: “President Obama became so publicly opposed to military action that he sacrificed any option that could have conceivably raised the stakes and forced the mullahs into making major concessions,” he wrote of the Iran nuclear agreement.

Islamic State beheads teenager for apostasy. By Robert Spencer, JihadWatch.org
Excerpt: A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence. This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-`ashriyyah, Al-Ja`fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”
