First thoughts. The tie between Hillary and Bernie is good for Republicans. Let the bloodletting begin. As expected, Trump claims a win, as he'd do if he finished last, but he was soundly beaten by Cruz and barely edged my preferred candidate Rubio, but a point. This is a win for Rubio, given a short while ago he was at 10%. Note that over 60% of Iowa Republicans, in a 91% white state, voted for one of the minority candidates (two Hispanics and a Black guy), while 100% of Democrats voted for an old white person. On the other hand, if you add the Clinton , Sanders and Trump votes, clearly a majority for progressive principles. I think that after New Hampshire there will only be three, maybe four Republicans still in the race. ~Bob. Your post illustrates that all the hoopla over the decline of whites may be a little overstated... Cruz and Rubio, don't look much different than Mayflower descendants, and their policy positions are much closer to the principles of the founding generation that that of many actual Mayflower descendants. --Chuck

Book Recommendation: Amistad - A Novel by David Pesci
There are several histories of the slave uprising on the Spanish slave ship Amistad. I happened to be given this novel, which I though was fairly well written and stayed close to the facts, though I have not read the histories. It came out in 1997, the same year as the movie. The story is now well known, a group of Africans had been seized and sold by black slave traders to illegal Spanish slavers. They were resold in Cuba and put on the Amistad for further sale down island. They seized control of the ship, but were soon captured by an American Warship, which sailed them to Connecticut , where slavery was legal, hoping for salvage rights to ship, cargo and "slaves." Their case was taken up by abolitionists. The government was in the hands of Martin Van Buren and pro-slavery Democrats who wanted the case to go away before the November, 1840 election (which Harrison won, defeating Van Buren). The case was fought all the way to the Supreme Court, so it is an action drama and a courtroom drama. I found it worth reading.

It was really heartbreaking, all those picture of gassed, dead, discolored, and decomposing Kurdish kids, who are, in fact, every bit as cute as the papers and television made them out to be.4 At least when they’re not dead they are. My team sergeant, Sig, and I were duly appalled and sickened. The Arabs, though, didn’t seem to understand. To paraphrase, “What’s the problem? Don’t you understand that these were Kurds who got gassed?” At the time, I found that attitude completely inexplicable. Fast forward a few months; we’ve incited the Kurds and Shia to rise up and overthrow Saddam. They didn’t, of course, while such an uprising would have looked difficult and might have done us some good.5 Oh, no; instead the Shia – whose rebellion was spontaneous, anyway – waited until it looked like the Iraqi Army was crushed and such an uprising would be easy. The Kurds – who were organized – waited even longer. Sorry, boys, but when we offer you a quid pro quo, that doesn’t translate into “free lunch.” Moreover, when we’ve already offered someone a cease-fire it’s a bit late to try to get us to start hostilities again.6 In short, we owed them nothing. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-`ashriyyah, Al-Ja`fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”
