General News and Comment

America's Accelerating Decay. By Dennis Prager
Excerpt: Compared with nearly all of American history, the average American school teaches much less about important subjects such as American history, English grammar, literature, music, and art. Instead schools are teaching much more about 'social justice,' environmentalism, and sex. . . . At least two generations of American young people have been taught that moral categories are nothing more than personal (or societal) preferences.

Worth Reading: The Ticket to Prosperity. By Walter Williams
Excerpt: "Today’s Third World poverty is mostly self-inflicted — indigenously created. The growth-promoting characteristics of the non-poor countries that are all but absent in poor countries are protected private property rights, personal liberty, enforcement of contracts, rule of law and a market-oriented economic system." (Just the things progressives would love to do away with in the US and other western countries. ~Bob)

Excerpt: The news that she used an iPad as well as a BlackBerry demolishes her already ridiculous claim that she set up a private email server so she would only need to carry one gadget as secretary of state. At a March 10 press conference, Clinton put it this way: “I thought using one device would be simpler, and, obviously, it hasn’t worked out that way. Looking back, it would have been probably . . . smarter to have used two devices.”

Decoding the Obama doctrine. By Daniel Pipes
Excerpt: "The Obama Doctrine is simple and universal: Warm relations with adversaries and cool them with friends. . . . The great question ahead is how, in their wisdom, the American people will judge the Obama Doctrine when they next vote for president in 19 months. Will they repudiate his policy of shuffling and contrition, as they comparably did in 1980 when they elected Ronald Reagan over Jimmy Carter? Or will they choose four more years of it, thereby turning the Obama Doctrine into the new norm and Americans into European-style remorseful masochists?"

Report: Biden Told Chinese Leader That US Focus On Human Rights ‘Doesn’t Make Us Better’
Excerpt: Joe Biden apparently doesn’t think America’s focus on human rights makes it superior to authoritarian regimes that systematically violate their people’s basic human rights. At least that’s what he told Xi Jinping before the Chinese leader assumed his country’s top office, according to a report in the New Yorker magazine.... But it is pretty astounding for an American leader to claim that it makes no moral difference how a country treats its people. (Easy if one has no morals, no values and is not a Christian, and is, in fact, anti-Christian. --Barb)

Feds giving Puerto Ricans disability benefits because they speak Spanish
Excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) approved disability benefits for hundreds of Puerto Ricans because they do not speak English, despite the fact that Puerto Rico is a predominantly Spanish-speaking territory. According to a new audit by the Office of Inspector General (OIG), the agency is misapplying rules that are intended to provide financial assistance to individuals who are illiterate or cannot speak English in the United States. Under the rules, Puerto Ricans are allowed to receive disability benefits for their inability to speak English as well.

Honor and Distinction: NCIS investigation reportedly shows Bergdahl had 'deliberate plan' to 'offer himself up' to the Taliban
Excerpt: Shaffer, a former military intelligence officer and Fox News contributor, said two senior sources told him that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation included a forensic review of his computer, which show Bergdahl’s apparent intent to travel to Uzbekistan. “He was going to go off to Uzbekistan,” Shaffer told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “He had made contact with local Afghans and wanted to be moved to Uzbekistan and then made contact with the Russians because he wanted to talk to Russian organized crime ...

VA official got $288G 'relocation payment' for DC-to-Philly move, rep blasts 'outrageous' amount
Excerpt: Despite the spokesman’s claim, the VA’s internal statistics show that Rubens, who oversaw 57 regional benefits offices in her previous job, presided over a massive increase in processing times for veterans’ claims. Rubens received more than $97,000 in bonuses between 2007 and 2011. But the average time to process veterans’ claims doubled to 325 days during that period. (Per article, percentage of backlogged cases almost doubled as well under Rubens. --Barb)

Labor Department failed to properly report $2 million in employee conferences. By Josh Hicks
Excerpt: The Department of Labor failed to follow federal reporting guidelines for some of its most expensive employee conferences in 2013, missing statutory deadlines for telling auditors about the events and potentially miscalculating its cost reductions, according to a watchdog review.

The meanest things Democrats have said about Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, ranked. By Hunter Schwarz
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/04/06/the-meanest-things-democrats-have-said-about-hillary-clintons-presidential-bid-ranked/?wpisrc=nl_politics&wpmm=1
Excerpt: But, her expected coronation hasn't stopped a few Democrats from offering some less-than-positive thoughts about her and her candidacy. Here's the five meanest, ranked from least mean to most mean.

Rand Paul Begins a Campaign for President With ‘Guts’ and ‘Gray Cells.’ By Ken McIntyre
Excerpt: If one thing looks certain about Paul’s campaign for the Republican nomination for president, which he is set to announce Tuesday, his determination to seek out and engage potential new GOP voters will put him in many more unconventional settings.

Excerpt: Former Texas governor Rick Perry accused the Obama administration of “delusional thinking” and keeping the American military in the dark about the threats facing the country in a speech at the Citadel, South Carolina’s military college, earlier today. “If you choose to wear the uniform of our nation, you deserve the truth about the realities you will face, however unpleasant,” Perry said. “At no time in the last 25 years has the world been more dangerous. And because of it, some of you will be called upon to put your lives at risk.” Perry effectively accused President Obama of lying in his statements on U.S. efforts against ISIS and other terror groups:

Excerpt: Let’s think on that. With the world in turmoil, who do you really want sitting across the negotiating table from Vladimir Putin, the Iranian mullahs, or the Chinese? How about a military man to command the war to destroy radical-Islamic jihadism? Very few people know that between 1972 and 1977, Perry served in the U.S. Air Force, flying C-130 tactical aircraft in Europe and the Middle East. He is the only current GOP candidate to have worn the military uniform. And he rarely talks about it.

Rick Perry at the Citadel. By Jennifer Rubin
Excerpt: At the Citadel today former Texas governor Rick Perry will deliver a speech worthy of a commander in chief. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) can be more poetic and stirring, but no other 2016 hopeful displays the sense of command and steely strength as well as Perry. Perhaps it is his military training, to which he refers in the speech, or perhaps it is his adulation of what philosophers call “manly virtues” — courage, confidence, honor, self-sacrifice — that make him unique among the 2016 contenders. (In 2012, Ben Smith was at Politico and declared that the Washington Post’s Jen Rubin was “Rick Perry’s worst nightmare,” writing of her “brutal treatment” of the Texas governor. -- Jim Geraghty)

China Unveils Three New Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarines
Excerpt: The Chinese Navy is preparing to commission three new, nuclear-powered attack submarines with a vertical launching system able to fire supersonic anti-ship missiles, a report from China Daily said. The China Central Television showed satellite pictures earlier this week of the three submarines anchored at an unidentified port claiming that the new submarines are China’s most advanced Type-093G attack submarines.

Admiral Says China Outnumbers U.S. in Attack Submarines
Excerpt: The Chinese navy now operates a greater number of attack submarines than the U.S. Navy and is rapidly expanding the scope of their undersea missions and patrols, U.S. Navy leaders told Congress Wednesday. “Their submarine force has grown over a tremendous rate. They now have more diesel and nuclear attack submarines than we have so they’ve passed us in total quantity — but in quality they are still not there,” said Vice Adm. Joseph Mulloy, deputy chief of Naval operations, integration of capabilities and resources.

Gun News

Why no mass shootings in Israel?
Actually, the vast majority of people don't go around armed. However, there is a LOT of armed security, both visible and hidden, so that all terrorists bear risk. Moreover, Israelis are attuned to their surroundings in a way most other people are not and will often spot something that is amiss. Finally, except for bombers, other attackers draw a crowd of civilians most of whom have had military training. It is my experience that walking alone after midnight in any Israeli city is a relaxing experience in contrast to doing so in the U.S. This is unfortunate for us. Cordially, --Larry Greenberg

Feisty! 92-Year-Old Blind Woman Wards Off West Tulsa Burglars. By Melissa Hawks
Excerpt: She had just locked the back door and put a board up when she heard the thieves trying to break into her home. That's when she went for her pistol. "I got up close to the door and said, 'Come on in, boys! The police won't take you away, the morgue will. I'll take care of you,'” Smock told them. Within seconds they ran off, but Smock was still angry over what they had done. “If I could get a hold of the ones who got my friends up there, I'd take them out," she said

UN Climate Chief: We Should ‘Make Every Effort’ To Reduce Population Increases
Excerpt: United Nations climate chief Christiana Figueres said humanity “really should make every effort” to reduce global population trends to protect the environment and fight global warming in an interview with Climate One....The U.N. said countries will have to increase water prices or recycling programs to accommodate more people. The U.N. argued in 2013 that more people should eat insects for protein and help the environment by reducing the demand for traditional meats from cows, chickens and pigs. (My, oh my! US Ag Dept encouraging people eat more plants (hard sell to US moms to "eat more bugs") and fewer proteins from meat. And there have been those curious appearances of Avian flu in chickens and turkeys, diarrhea bug in pigs and now dog influenza...Who hates pigs and dogs? Oh, let me see..... Don't worry. POTUS has a plan to decrease population in US big time....Iran deal, open borders, more "children" currently surging in, offering to fly children in at our expense to "join their parents" and all those diseases they bring with them, and importing thousands from ME to "transform" US...and geoengineering, continuing "drought" over CA and bringing jet stream over Gulf to make East wet. Wondering who is paying for the 28+ trails over our neighborhood in 1.5 hours this AM. Day and night. --Barb. Well, we could give up fighting Ebola, AIDS, Malaria, hunger....Or she could kill herself... ~Bob)

Religion of Peace News

Last week, Islamic militants murdered 150 Christians in Kenya, explicitly because of their faith. According to the Associated Press, "The attackers separated Christian students from Muslim ones and massacred the Christians." But Barack Obama couldn't be bothered to mention faith at all. The White House statement denounced "terrorist atrocities" against "men and women" and "students," but there was nary a peep about "Muslims" or "Christians." Likewise, Obama neglected to mention the 21 Egyptian Christians beheaded by ISIL earlier this year were anything but "citizens." It would seem the only time Obama doesn't mind mentioning Christians is when he's lecturing them about the Crusades.

The Age of the Anti-Christian Pogrom. By Rich Lowry
Excerpt: The least we can do is to speak up forcefully about the plight of threatened Christians and urge governments to do more to protect them. It is one of the scandals of our time that the president of Egypt has been a more courageous voice on this than the president of the United States.

Krauthammer on the Fundamental Problem With the Iran Deal
Excerpt: Political analyst Charles Krauthammer outlines the real problem with Barack Obama’s Iran deal: “The problem with deal is really a fundamental one, apart from all of the details. … Obama [said] in 2012 that the object of this is to end their nuclear program. That was the understanding. You end the program you get a lifting of sanctions. What we are talking about here is a preserving of the program, leaving it in tact everywhere even the underground facility in Fordow, which Obama said if you have a peaceful program there is no need for that. That all stays in tact. What he is talking about now is preventing a nuclear weapon, which means by some calculations you leave the infrastructure in tact but it would take them a while to achieve a bomb.

The Iran 'Agreement' Charade. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: By abandoning virtually all its demands for serious restrictions on Iran’s nuclear bomb program, the Obama administration has apparently achieved the semblance of a preliminary introduction to the beginning of a tentative framework for a possible hope of an eventual agreement with Iran. But even this hazy “achievement” may vanish like a mirage. It takes two to agree – and Iran has already publicly disputed and even mocked what President Obama says is the nature of that framework.

Interesting: Chuck Schumer bucks White House on Iran: The top Democrat throws his weight behind legislation to give Congress power to reject a deal. By Burgess Everett
Excerpt: Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, one of Capitol Hill’s most influential voices in the Iran nuclear debate, is strongly endorsing passage of a law opposed by President Barack Obama that would give Congress an avenue to reject the White House-brokered framework unveiled last week. The comments Monday by the Democratic leader-in-waiting illustrate the enormity of the task ahead for Obama and his team: While there’s no guarantee that Congress would ultimately reject an agreement with Iran, there’s an increasingly bipartisan consensus that Congress should at least have the ability to do so.

Russia Nervously Eyes the U.S.-Iran Deal. By Reva Bhalla
Excerpt: Russia has no interest in seeing a nuclear-armed Iran in the neighborhood, but the mere threat of an unshackled Iranian nuclear program and a hostile relationship between Washington and Tehran provided just the level of distraction Moscow needed to keep the United States from committing serious attention to Russia's former Soviet sphere. Russia tried its best to keep the Americans and Iranians apart. Offers to sell Iran advanced air defense systems were designed to poke holes in U.S. threats to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities. Teams of Russian nuclear experts whetted Iran's appetite for civilian nuclear power with offers to build additional power reactors.

Al-Qaida Decimates Yemen
Excerpt: It’s getting harder for Barack Obama to use Yemen as a model of successful U.S. foreign policy as al-Qaida and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels made significant military gains in the beleaguered state in recent days. Last week, al-Qaida militants claimed the key Yemeni port city of Mukalla, freeing nearly 300 prisoners and delivering a setback to the 10-nation coalition led by Saudi Arabia that has been engaged in an air and land campaign there. Among those freed were Khaled Batarfi, a senior leader of al-Qaida in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP). So much for al-Qaida being “on the run.”

Interesting: Leading Conservatives Call on Apple to Pull Out of Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran Until They Stop Torturing Their Gay Citizens
Excerpt: Last week, I got together with Bruce Carroll from Gay Patriot to write a letter calling on Apple to live up to its publicly stated principles by pulling out of countries that murder their citizens for being gay. After the letter was written, we asked some other conservatives to sign on with us. A full list of signatories follows. (Stopping bakeries from refusing cakes to gays? An outrage. Stopping Muslims from murdering gays? Racist Islamophobia. ~Bob)

Crisis in Palestinian Camp in Syria Has Worsened Since ISIS Invasion, U.N. Says.
Excerpt: Relief officials at the United Nations expressed alarm on Monday about a deepening humanitarian disaster in Syria’s Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, which was invaded last week by Islamic State militants and their allies. Roughly 18,000 people, including 3,500 children, have been trapped by fighting in Yarmouk, which is on the southern outskirts of the capital, Damascus, and is less than 10 miles from the presidential palace. (Let's send Kerry's gay ambassador to discuss with ISIS. ~Bob

Boko Haram disguised as preachers kill at least 24 in Nigeria
Excerpt: The attackers arrived in cars late on Sunday and gathered people at a mosque in the remote village of Kwajafa, pretending to preach Islam. They then opened fire on them, witness Simeon Buba said.

Interesting report from the front: Battle Ready. By Mindy Belz
Excerpt: Assyrian Christians and Kurds in Iraq's north have been holding a 640-mile front against ISIS since last year. With a humanitarian crisis at their doorstep, can a planned offensive break ISIS?

Maine: Lacrosse coach loses job for criticizing Islam. By Robert Spencer, JihadWatch.org
Excerpt: Freedom of speech, you say? Increasingly not, in the United States: those who dare notice jihad violence and Islamic supremacism are vilified, marginalized, and defamed. When Scott Lees was fired, was truth a criterion? Apparently not.

Arrest made in attack on Bosnian Jewish leader
Excerpt: A man was arrested in connection with the attack on Bosnian Jewish leader Eli Tauber.
Tauber, an adviser on culture and religious affairs for the Jewish Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was attacked by a man wielding a weighted chain at a cafe in central Sarajevo. Many witnessed the attack. The attack, which was widely reported in the Bosnian media, occurred on March 21 while journalists from National Geographic magazine were interviewing Tauber about the status of Jews in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Happy Easter: IS brings down Syria’s Historical Virgin Mary Church
Excerpt: The IS booby-trapped and blew up the Virgin Mary Church in the town of Tal Nasra in the western countryside of Hasaka province, the report said, adding that the attack is part of the “brutal crimes” the terrorist group is committing in Syria.

Death to America. By Mona Charen
Excerpt: Maybe I'm too sensitive, but when a foreign autocrat leads his people in chants of "Death to America," I take it personally. President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry apparently don't. The chant, which became a staple of the Islamic Republic during the 1979 revolution, is not a relic of the past. Just last weekend, at a rally in the northern part of the country, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was interrupted by the chant as he was denouncing American "lies" and "arrogance." He smiled and responded, "Of course, yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure."
