Excerpt: The Republican plan to overhaul Medicare is so unpopular that it has increased support for Democrats' healthcare reform law, according to a new poll for the liberal Herndon Alliance. But the unpopularity of the Republican proposal to replace Medicare with subsidies for private insurance - 54 percent oppose the GOP budget - translates to a 3-point increase in support for the healthcare reform law. Global war on drugs a failure, high-level panel says
Excerpt: The Global Commission on Drug Policy called for a new approach to reducing drug abuse to replace the current strategy of strictly criminalizing drugs and incarcerating drug users while battling criminal cartels that control the drug trade. The study urges "experimentation by governments with models of legal regulation of drugs," adding: "This recommendation applies especially to cannabis, but we also encourage other experiments in decriminalization and legal regulation." A lot of the economic harm that results from illegal drugs, robberies in particular, are caused by the very fact that the drugs are illegal.
