The Last Assassin: The
Hunt for the Killers of Julius Caesar by Peter Stothard
Thanks
to Shakespeare, every moderately literate person knows that Caesar was
assassinated, and that Octavia defeated Antony and Cleopatra to become sole emperor
of Rome. But few of us, including me, know what came between. This book remedies
that historical gap. The assassination was followed by brutal wars as Octavia
and Antony united to hunt down and destroy the assassins, before fighting a war
to determine who would rule Rome. It was a near run thing. The real value of
this book is to demonstrate how a republic can fall rapidly into an autocracy.
America beware.
