Lost Victory: A
Firsthand Account of America's Sixteen-Year Involvement in Vietnam by William Colby, James McCargar
William
Colby became CIA station Chief in Saigon in 1959 just as the north launched its
“people’s war. Against the south” In 1975, when the US Congress reneged on our
pledges to the Republic of Vietnam and handed them over to the long night of
communism, Colby was director of the CIA. For 16 years he was as involved in
Vietnam as anybody on the American side. His account of the war, what was done
right and what was a mistake is worth reading. He believes, as do I, that a
different outcome was within reach. It will give you a better understanding of
the war. I learned many new things from the book. Trigger warning: it may open old
wounds for Vietnam vets. Still it is well worth reading.
