Black Lives Matter L.A. Co-Founder Refers to Cops as ‘Slave Catchers,’ Refuses to Engage Them
Melina Abdullah is professor and chair of Pan-African Studies at California State University Los Angeles and also the cofounder of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles. She takes militancy all the way out there, won't even have a discussion with cops or any of those many, many (in her mind) White supremacists (consciously or unconsciously so), says people have a right to riot, and that telling people to have open discussions and develop programs and vote is just one more kind of racist domination of that she refuses to accept. She wants police to be abolished, since in her mind they only exist to suppress and persecute people of color. I wonder how she thinks things would work in LA with no police at all. I try to think of the kind of indoctrination that goes on in any classes she teaches, or maybe the whole department she chairs, and it makes me shudder. Promoting racial division ever more aggressively is one of the worst things that's going on in our society, and it just adds to my fears for the future. And part of me wonders what great purpose an entire department of Pan-African studies serves in the educational process to prepare young people to be good citizens with salable skills. Maybe a student can pair up those courses with Gender Studies and Social Justice studies so they can graduate ready to.... flip burgers? And of course this kind of thing creates pushback and encourages the KKK types, again, exactly what we don't need. Heaven help us. --Del
