No, civility isn't optional
The writer makes a great point, one that I really wish we could get across to that fraction of Americans, Left and Right, young and old, that have slid downhill into such burning passion that they have abandoned all concerns about decent communication, reasonable disagreement, appropriate levels of acting out dissent, and hanging on to any kind of recognition of people of contrasting opinions as still being worthy of at least basic courtesy. The assaults we're seeing, the people screamed at while at a restaurant, the calls for unfettered nastiness, are all terrible things for our society. We have to hope and work for it to get better. --Del
