Health Update: Someone posted on my blog: "Hello Mr. Hall. How Are You?" Not much change this year. Still spend 35-40 hours a week managing the lung transplant, including physical therapy Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I do 5-6 nebulizers every, but add in a long antibiotic one for 16 days, then off for 16 days. It clears the lung, pushes my FEV average (the air I can expel in one second) to 1.80-1.85. When off I run 1.70 to 1.78. Not real strong, but getting out to, church, shop, book club, go to dinner, make the occasional presentation such as on PF & lung transplants Thursday or to the ethics board Friday, and take drives in the country. (Drives will taper off until May.) Swamped with the blog, preparation for presentations, writing, reading, baking (made a nice blueberry-pecan pie and also cornbread this week). So life is good and I'm still glad to be here. ~Bob

Dane County sheriff ethics battle ends in dismissal, questions. By Matt Kittle
Excerpt: Dane County resident and former Marine Robert Hall knew going in the odds were long the Dane County Ethics Board would take his side and punish the county’s top cop for appearing in a campaign ad for state Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley.
He’s still amazed at the hypocrisy of Dane County ’s left-wing ethics. “I think if a County officer had appeared in a political ad for a conservative candidate, the roof would have fallen in,” Hall, a conservative, wrote on his blog Friday after the board’s 4-1 decision to dismiss his ethics complaint against Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney. “But supporting progressives places you above the law you are supposed to enforce.” Mahoney, a Democrat, again didn’t bother to show up.
I read this on Kindle, on sale at the time I bought it. If you enjoy historical fiction and/or have an interest in Scotland , I highly recommend this well researched and well written series of novels. I have a masters in history, have taken the Free University of Scotland's Scottish History course, been to Scotland 20 times and walked the ground in many of the places detailed. The author was scrupulous in pulling in facts, using real people as the major characters and using only battles and major events that happened. This is the story of the wars of independence and the rise of King Robert the Bruce, from the point of view of his close friend and able war leader, "The Good" Sir James. Or the Black Douglas to the English. I found a few typos, but no historical errors. I highly recommend this enjoyable set of novels. ~Bob
Must Read: We face a three-headed monster. By Niall Ferguson
Excerpt: Let’s come off the prescription meds. The world faces three distinct threats: an epidemic of jihadist violence, most of it in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia; uncontrolled mass migration from these places to Europe; and the emergence of a “fifth column” of Islamic extremists within nearly all Western societies, including the United States . We must take care to distinguish each component of this terrifying trifecta. The jihadist epidemic is by no means confined to Syria . Last year alone, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace, 32,658 people were killed by terrorism, compared to 18,111 in 2013. The two most deadly terrorist groups were Boko Haram and the Islamic State, which together were responsible for half of the fatalities. Nearly four in five attacks occurred in just five countries: Afghanistan , Iraq , Nigeria , Pakistan , and Syria . But the plague of jihad extends as far as the Malian capital Bamako , where Islamist gunmen slaughtered hotel guests on Friday. ... Niall Ferguson is professor of history at Harvard University, a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution, Stanford, and the author of “Kissinger, 1923-1968: The Idealist.’’

Must Read: Muslim cleric: “The Islamic State is a byproduct of Al Azhar’s programs.” By Raymond Ibrahim, JihadWatch.org
Excerpt: Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah Nasr, a scholar of Islamic law and graduate of Egypt ’s Al Azhar University—regularly touted as the world’s most prestigious Islamic university—recently exposed his alma mater in a televised interview. After being asked why Al Azhar, which is in the habit of denouncing secular thinkers as un-Islamic, refuses, Sheikh Nasr said: "It can’t [condemn the Islamic State as un-Islamic]. The Islamic State is a byproduct of Al Azhar’s programs. So can Al Azhar denounce itself as un-Islamic? Al Azhar says there must be a caliphate and that it is an obligation for the Muslim world [to establish it]. Al Azhar teaches the law of apostasy and killing the apostate. Al Azhar is hostile towards religious minorities, and teaches things like not building churches, etc. Al Azhar upholds the institution of jizya [extracting tribute from religious minorities]. Al Azhar teaches stoning people. So can Al Azhar denounce itself as un-Islamic?" (For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has stood as a beacon of Islamic learning; and for over a century, Cairo University has been a source of Egypt 's advancement. And together, you represent the harmony between tradition and progress. --Barack Obama)
OK, and of course, yet another attack: Mali Terrorism
27 murdered in Mali , again dying to the shouts of "Allahu Akbar" as merciless killers went on another preplanned atrocity. One American again, but hey, lots of other people from other countries, these guys are equal opportunity maniacs, if you're anything other than they are, you die, no problem. But no, it's nothing to do with that forbidden phrase "radical Islam", it's all just coincidences, starting all the way back with the first attack on the WTC and the murder of Theo Van Gogh. That's kind of like saying that the takeover of so many nations by communism all over Europe after WW2 had nothing to do with Leninism, it was all just coincidences. I wonder what it will take for some people to break out of denial and understand that violent jihadism is a mental illness of sorts which fundamentalist Islamic views can make some people, far too many people, liable to being infected. That it doesn't matter if that is only a small fraction of Muslims, because a small fraction of over a billion people is way more than enough, when they are smart and get financing and other kinds of support, to become a real problem for civilization. And unfortunately, some of these guys are really smart, crafty, good at long term planning, good at propaganda and using the Internet, and of course, as one of them as said, they "love death more than you (Westerners) love life". Having enemies is not a good thing, but when they are smart, have money, various kinds of support, and are eager to die as long as they can take a lot of innocents with them, then it's a really bad thing. Which calls for tough measures, but so far the only leader willing to really go at it is Putin. The rest of the West is still so caught up in being very Western, enlightened, not overreacting, and respecting Islam as a religion of peace, that we've hamstrung ourselves. Sadly, there are times when the only way to fight effectively means there will be collateral damage. That varies from the civilians living too close to the house where the ISIS leaders was blown up by a bomb or drone, to innocent Muslim refugees who become unwelcome because there are likely to be at least some sleeper ISIS agents among them. War brings on injustice, always. In WW2 the bulk of the German, Italian, and Japanese who went to internment camps in the US were innocent of anything. But not all were, and there was no penetration of spies or activists from those quarters in the US during the war. (Ironically, all the real spying was done by agents of Russia , our erstwhile ally in the war.) All the foreign nationals living in the UK had to move away from the coast during the war as well, even including those who were actually refugees from Hitler's persecution. That wasn't exactly fair either, but it was part of working hard at guaranteeing as much security as possible. As long as no one is really damaged or killed, and in the end all freedoms are restored, a society can tolerate some such injustice. We are at a point now where having some kind of surveillance of mosques to determine if jihad is being preached here is very reasonable. And when there is such preaching or the distribution of such literature, or that kind of recruiting going on in the Net, then I believe it's time to ban those preachers, close such mosques, and hack and close any such web activity. I really don't care if the FBI sends people to my parish to find out if our priests are fomenting treason, and I don't think any Muslim living here should care about the same happening at his or her mosque. When nothing is found, absolutely nothing happens. When something is found, this society has the right to defend itself and its members. When WW2 started for the US , the whole network of Hitler-sympathetic German Bunds were shut down. Why should things be different for mosques where jihadism is preached? We have already seen enough blood on our streets from local jihadists, I don't want to see any more. That doesn't make me an "Islamophobe", any more than fighting communism made me a Russian hater or a Chinese hater or a hater of Vietnamese. It is the particular ideology of a fraction of Muslims that I am concerned for, just as in WW2 we were concerned with the ideology of Nazism, not with all Germans. Hopefully we'll start getting serious about this before we have our own Paris event in NYC, LA, San Fran, St Louis , Chicago , or Atlanta . --Del
Worth Reading and Subscribing to: The Goldberg File. By Jonah Goldberg
Excerpt: If you Google “Christian terrorism,” you’re probably a jackass to begin with. But if you do — bidden not by your own drive to jackassery but by the natural curiosity inspired by this “news” letter — you’ll find lots of left-wing trollery about how the worst terrorist attacks on American soil have been committed by Christians. Much of it is tendentious, question-begging twaddle. But I really don’t want to waste a lot of time on whether Tim McVeigh was a Christian or not (he really wasn’t). What I find interesting is that many of the same people who clutch their pearls at the mere suggestion that Islamic terrorism has anything to do with — oh, what’s the word again? — oh right: Islam, seem to have no problem making the case that “Christian terrorism” is like a real thing. Remember how so many liberals loved — loved — Obama’s sophomoric and insidious tirade about not getting on our “high horses” about ISIS ’s atrocities in the here and now because medieval Christians did bad things a thousand years ago? They never seem to think that argument through. Leaving out the ass-aching stupidity of the comparison, it actually concedes the very point Obama never wants to concede. By laying the barbaric sins of Christians a thousand years ago at the feet of Christians today, he implicitly tags Muslims with the barbarism committed in their name today.
Pretend War: Obama Gave Islamic State 45 Min Warning Before Bombing
Excerpt: The Obama White House is giving ISIS a 45 minute warning before bombing their oil tankers by dropping leaflets advising potential jihadists to flee before air strikes in Syria . “Get out of your trucks now, and run away from them. Warning: air strikes are coming. Oil trucks will be destroyed. Get away from your oil trucks immediately. Do not risk your life,” the leaflet reads.

Excerpt: Though President Barack Obama threatened to veto legislation that would make it difficult for Syrian and Iraqi refugees fleeing ISIS to enter the United States, 47 House Democrats broke rank on Nov. 19 and voted in favor of the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act, making it veto-proof in that portion of Congress.

There is nothing illegal about this because the State Department, which oversees the program, does not require any sort of monitoring or tracking of refugees.

While DC debates religion, refugees, Iraqi Christians feel Uncle Sam's boot
Excerpt: Amid Washington ’s raging debate over refugees and religion, more than two dozen Iraqi Christians who crossed into the U.S. from Mexico in hopes of joining their friends and families are being deported after their bids for religious asylum were rejected. A total of 27 Chaldean Christians, driven from their homeland by Al Qaeda and ISIS, entered the country in April and May, hoping to join the thriving Iraqi Christian community in and around San Diego . But the door to America is being slammed on the 17 men and 10 women over what their supporters say are technicalities. (Uncle Sam Anti-Christian. Bombshell: Obama Rejects Intel On Known Islamic Terrorists
Excerpt: Attkisson said President Obama has come to the point where he will not even listen to intelligence reports on certain Islamic terror groups – groups that are listed by the U.S. State Department as involved in international terror against Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims around the world.
Excerpt: Black Daesh, white Daesh. The former slits throats, kills, stones, cuts off hands, destroys humanity’s common heritage and despises archaeology, women and non-Muslims. The latter is better dressed and neater but does the same things. The Islamic State; Saudi Arabia . In its struggle against terrorism, the West wages war on one, but shakes hands with the other. This is a mechanism of denial, and denial has a price: preserving the famous strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia at the risk of forgetting that the kingdom also relies on an alliance with a religious clergy that produces, legitimizes, spreads, preaches and defends Wahhabism, the ultra-puritanical form of Islam that Daesh feeds on. (An interesting article, and the writer is somewhat correct, but seems to gloss over the detail that the Saudis, while certainly responsible in large part for the spread of fundamentalist Islam, haven't been involved directly in major violent attacks all over the world. The Iranian ayatollahs have actually done more to get people killed, especially Americans, and execute more people every year than the Saudis do. They send money out to the killers directly. And of course the Saudis are Sunni, the Iranians are Shia, so they hate each other a lot. But the Iranians and the ISIS guys hate the West, most especially us, more than anyone else. So if he wants to talk about ISIS that's made it, he needed to bring in Iran for sure. The Saudis are bad news in many ways, but less physically dangerous to others than ISIS or Iran . --Del )

Obama and the ISIS 'Recruitment Tool' Canard
Excerpt: Obama knows, moreover, that because sharia tells Muslims their lives are more valuable than those of non-Muslims, nothing is more apt to rile them up than an accusation that nativist Americans are portraying them as second-rate. 9 young men and their paths to terror in Paris
Excerpt: Investigators are still piecing together how a group of at least nine young men, believed to be mostly French and Belgian nationals who became radicalized in Europe, planned their offensive, funded it, equipped themselves with explosives and assault rifles, arranged safe houses and launched the coordinated attacks, which killed 130 and injured more than 350 across Paris. European authorities, combing through electronic and banking records and questioning dozens of people detained in raids over the past week, don’t yet know how long the men, many of whom are known to have traveled to Syria to fight with the Islamic State, spent preparing the attack.
Former navy admiral behind bin Laden raid warns of 'barbarians at our gate.' William McRaven calls for US strategy of ‘continuous and direct action’ against extremists including ‘boots on the ground’
Excerpt: “In the end, we know the right strategy,” he said. “It is continuous and direct action on the extremists until they have no more capacity and no more reach. It will be a generational fight, but if we don’t take it on now, then we should not be surprised when the barbarians are at our gate and we’re wondering how they got here.”
Obama’s Isis quandary: clock ticks on viable strategy as criticism intensifies
Excerpt: Obama has responded with emotions rarely seen during his stoical administration: anger at “hysterical” politicians back home, sorrow at the thought of sending US troops into another Middle East war he fears would be unwinnable, and petulance in the face of those who question his resolve. The frustration is understandable, for in between the dramatic headlines and calls for all-out war, there have been glimpses of just how limited the US president’s room for manoeuvre has become. One such source of realism has been the Pentagon, which quietly released a report on Friday detailing the latest deaths of Iraqi civilians in one of its many airstrikes against Isis . (It's approved to kill children, women, wedding parties and other civilians with drones, but if it's a bombing run and their are folks working for/with ISIS, then US sends them leaflets so they won't be hurt. --Barb)

Quiet Capitulation: Merkel Slowly Changes Tune on Refugee Issue
Excerpt: At the G-20 summit in Antalya , Turkey at the beginning of the week, she spoke of quotas -- fixed numbers of refugees that Europe is willing to accept. On the one hand, of course, introduction the idea of quotas is a concession to reality, because the chancellor knows that the ongoing arrival to Germany of up to 10,000 refugees every day is not sustainable. But the change is also a silent capitulation to her critics. Horst Seehofer, the head of the CSU, and Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière are now setting the tone in Germany 's refugee policy, and the Paris terrorist attacks have only given them more leverage.
Obama's four-summit trip did not always go according to script

Excerpt: "We do not track refugees," the State Department spokesperson says. "Once a refugee arrives they can move wherever they want." LIBERAL SILENCE AS USUAL: Where is the outcry for the modern blacks still owned as slaves by Islamic countries
I know that slavery, sanctified by the Qur'an, is still practiced in many areas under Muslim control. The IS Caliphate being one. The Islamic Republic of Mauritania only officially abolished slavery in 1956, and very recently signed an agreement to try to eliminate it. There is still slavery in the Sudan , I believe. He survived what many people believed to be a campaign killer when the stories about his credit card use in his younger days wound up being largely a nothingburger. Rubio’s biggest problems are basic ones: money and organization. His haul in the third fundraising quarter — $6 million — was far less than someone in his position could be expected to bring in. And his early-state voter-ID and turnout operations are less far along than those of Trump and Bush. Still, if you were betting today, you would bet on Rubio.
