Mizzou Meltdown and more worth reading political news

For Veterans Day we went to a ceremony at our granddaughter, Britnye's high school. Quite nice. She sings in the chorus. Met an 85-year-old Marine who was at the Inchon Landing and the Chosen Reservoir.  Afterwards we joined other Marines at olive Garden for the free meal they offer vets. As we were going in an old Marine headed out came over to us. He was 92. He was on Guadalcanal as an enlisted man. On Guam, he was told by his Col. that they needed Second Lieutenants, as too many had been killed! "Colonel," he said, "I hate officers. I don't want to be a Lieutenant." "Shut up, Lynch, or you'll be a private tomorrow." So he became an officer. Fought on Okinawa and in Korea, but was kept in the states to train troops for Vietnam. Quite an honor to meet these Marines. ~Bob

Book Recommendation: God's Battalions: The Case for the Crusades by Rodney Stark
This well-researched, well-reasoned and well-written history brings much needed balance to the politicized history that sees all actions in history by Muslims as benign and all actions by Jews and Christians as evil. Stark starts his history of the Crusades not with the First Crusade from Europe to the Holy Land, but with the long Muslim conquest or attempted conquest of Christian lands. On page 12 he says, "In 570, when Muhammad was born, Christendom stretched from the Middle East all along North Africa and embraced much of Europe. But only eighty years after Muhammad death in 632, a new Muslim empire had displaced Christians from most of the Middle East, all of North Africa, Cyprus, and most of Spain. In another century Sicily, Sardinia, Crete, and southern Italy also came under Muslim rule." He doesn't miss evil acts by the Crusaders, common to all warfare at the time, but juxtaposes them with equally evil slaughter by Muslims and puts both in their historical context. My only quibble is that he ends the book too soon, before the Muslim conquest of the Eastern Roman Empire and Constantinople, parts of the Balkans and attempts twice on Vienna, not to mention the long Muslim effort to subdue Europe by control of the Mediterranean including the Siege of the Knights of St. John in Malta and the defeat of the Muslim fleet at Lepanto, all part of the Islamic jihad "crusade" if you will to destroy Christianity and conquer Europe. The Crusades were Europe's reaction to aggressive Muslim empire building at the point of a sword. They have become politicized talking points to rally the recruits for the next wave of terrorism and suicide bombing, aided by intellectuals and the media who loath the civilization that nurtures them. This book is a must-read for history buffs, and for those who wish to see this put in a more balance historical context.

An expert weighs in on where the war on terror went wrong
Excerpt: Angelo Codevilla is not a household name, unless you’re a student of international affairs and military history. In that world, he's a certified rock star. Born in Italy in 1943, he immigrated to the United States as a child. He became a U.S. citizen and eventually earned a Ph.D. and began an academic career. In 1977, he joined the U.S. foreign service and quickly moved to Capitol Hill, where he served on the staff of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence. He was instrumental in the development of President Ronald Reagan’s signature program, the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), which was derided by its detractors as a fantasy, but many historians believe it helped to bring an end to the nuclear arms race the United States had been waging with the Soviet Union for more than 40 years. Codevilla has written more than a dozen books on national defense and statesmanship, some of which are considered classics in their field. I talked with Codevilla about his latest book, To Make and Keep Peace Among Ourselves and with All Nations.

WHY AMERICAN MEDIA IGNORE "MIGRANTS" IN EUROPE
Excerpt: Although the 19-minute film may feel like a dispatch from the future, it is cut entirely from recent news reports, police camera footage, and interviews. Kicking off with scenes of a modern car ferry disgorging thousands of illegals into Greece, the film then cuts to dozens of aerial shots of columns of migrants marching north into Europe.

Interesting: Winners and losers from the fourth Republican debate. By Chris Cillizza, Washington Post
Excerpt: Here are my winners and losers from the night that was: Winners: * Marco Rubio: Rubio's line about welders making more money than philosophy majors will be quoted all over the place in the post-debate analysis. (And, no, it wasn't totally accurate.)  Rubio knocked it out of the park when debating military spending and the right role for America in the world with Rand Paul. He got a meatball of a question when asked by the moderators about Hillary Clinton's résumé as compared with his own; he, unsurprisingly, answered it well and easily. Time and time again, he oozed knowledge while appearing entirely relaxed. ... Trump, as he has in each of the first four debates, stood center stage in Milwaukee on Tuesday night. But for the two-plus hours that the debate ran, Trump felt ancillary to the conversation. When he did get time to speak, he simply repeated his now-familiar lines — we don't win anymore, I have a great company, etc. — and little else. His answers on foreign policy were not good.

Another Take: The primetime debate: Who won, lost and survived. By Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post
Excerpt: Donald Trump was the big surprise. He at times attempted to present a more serious, subdued demeanor but was booed on several occasions and frankly embarrassed when, for example, after his rant about the Trans-Pacific Partnership and China, Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) pointed out China was not party to the TPP. Jeb Bush likewise ridiculed Trump’s remarks on allowing Russia to fight the Islamic State, which Moscow isn’t actually doing. He even drew boos when he accused Carly Fiorina of “interrupting everybody.” Fiorina managed to needle Trump once again mocking his remark that he’d met Vladimir Putin on “60 Minutes.” (“Although I have met him as well, not in a green room for a show, but in a private meeting,” she icily observed.) ... Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) once again had the strongest performance.

Worth Reading: The Coddling of the American Mind. In the name of emotional well-being, college students are increasingly demanding protection from words and ideas they don’t like. Here’s why that’s disastrous for education—and mental health.
Excerpt: Something strange is happening at America’s colleges and universities. A movement is arising, undirected and driven largely by students, to scrub campuses clean of words, ideas, and subjects that might cause discomfort or give offense. Last December, Jeannie Suk wrote in an online article for The New Yorker about law students asking her fellow professors at Harvard not to teach rape law—or, in one case, even use the word violate (as in “that violates the law”) lest it cause students distress. In February, Laura Kipnis, a professor at Northwestern University, wrote an essay in The Chronicle of Higher Education describing a new campus politics of sexual paranoia—and was then subjected to a long investigation after students who were offended by the article and by a tweet she’d sent filed Title IX complaints against her. In June, a professor protecting himself with a pseudonym wrote an essay for Vox describing how gingerly he now has to teach.

Excerpt: The looming catastrophe that could befall a nation that no longer respects its most basic freedoms was exposed once again as an acute crisis this week amid the disruptions on the University of Missouri campus. There, amid vague and poorly substantiated claims of endemic racist antipathy toward African-Americans, students and faculty alike engaged in a protest that regarded the presence of citizen and student journalists as a sinister development. One particularly aggressive faculty member abetted this abuse of public property was even shown calling for “muscle” to remove from the premises one of the student photographers. When asked if she thought this response was justified, the vice president of the Missouri Students Association crystalized the crisis afflicting Western education. “I personally am tired of hearing that first amendment rights protect students when they are creating a hostile and unsafe learning environment for myself and for other students here,” she said. If only this poor soul were an outlier, but anecdotal evidence that Americans are becoming less comfortable with the Constitutional right to free speech is increasingly matched by more scientific support. (There’s good reason to look at what’s going on in America’s college campuses with incredulity, befuddlement, anger, disdain, and repulsion. But what if the leftist temper-tantrum that we’re witnessing is in fact something of a last gasp, a sudden recognition that their long-awaited nirvana is never going to come? Deep down, they must realize that the only real career path for the campus radical is to join some leftist organization in a professional capacity or to stay on campus and attempt to become a professor. Corporate America may pay off an agitator, but they aren’t terribly eager to hire them or give them any real responsibility. The audience for leftist agitprop is pretty limited, while works they see as trigger-inducing, right-wing propaganda, like American Sniper, find large audiences. Sure, leftists have gained tighter and tighter control over the academic world over the past generation, but they’re recognizing obvious limitations on their ability to influence the culture at large from there. They police micro-aggressions while the culture grows coarser. They call for racial justice while the state of black America slips further and further into self-described crisis.  --Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt)

Excerpt: Tim Wolfe, the president of the University of Missouri, is resigning his post, an act of extraordinary cowardice on the part of the university. The University of Missouri is purported to be convulsed by racism. How so? A drunk white student walking down the street used a racial slur in reference to a group of black students; he has been exiled from the campus and probably will be expelled when the disciplinary process comes to its conclusion. Expelling a student for ungentlemanly conduct is the sort of thing that universities probably ought to do more of, but of course punishing the guilty is never enough for the Left. The innocent must be punished as well. ...  "When men with souls made of cotton candy wilt in the face of this sort of absurdity, it encourages it."

Kevin D. Williamson: Hysterical Yalies protest a free-speech panel
Excerpt: For the first several years of my life, I thought that “Yale man” was a synonym for “caveman,” because the only references to Yale I’d ever heard were from Thurston Howell III, who greeted displays of barbarism with “Heavens! A Yale man!” I thought of that when the police officer was obliged to carry the shrieking protester out of the venue where he’d come to put a stop to our free-speech discussion.

Norm Pattis: Don’t feel validated? Find a white male to blame
Excerpt: Much has been made, and will continue to be made, of the past week’s events at the University of Missouri and, closer to home, at Yale. These flashes in the pan do signal something important, but not what most folks think. What is at stake is the death of pluralism. (Looking like 2 in a row from Norm. Not sure if he’s truly fed up, or conservatism is just looking better all the time. George)

Satire: Short Film Mocking Social Justice in Education

Worth Subscribing to: Liberal Campuses. By Jonah Goldberg, The Goldberg File
I’ve been saying words to that effect all week, watching higher ed go into full meltdown. Because this “crisis” is 100 percent liberalism’s fault. Sure, sure, you can divvy up the slices of blame in different ways, but those guys tailgating in the parking lot drinking beers and eating bratwurst? Those are the conservatives and libertarians enjoying a day off, because they don’t have to wait in line for even a morsel of blame. I almost feel sorry for those decent, sincere career liberals standing there in the quad as the little Maoists scream in their faces and strip off the suede elbow patches on their tweedy jackets like a lieutenant being busted down to a private. As the kids fit lifelong members of the ACLU with their duncecaps, the poor souls can hear the conservatives hooting and laughing off beyond the fence, throwing nerf footballs and telling jokes at the liberals’ expense. ... Outside of the actual headquarters of the Democratic party itself, no major institution in America today is more thoroughly run and controlled by the Left than academia. ... Moreover, it’s been like this for generations. It was true when most of these administrators and faculty were born -- they have grown up inside a universe where this fact was simply taken for granted. With the Left given total control of these oases of tolerance and citadels of progressivism, what do we get? We get pampered and coddled students screaming that these institutions are hotbeds of racism, homophobia, sexism, and the rest of the 31 Flavors of Oppression. ("Public education is a socialist monopoly, a real one." -Milton Friedman)

Excerpt: Something stinks at the University of Missouri. A reported incident of vandalism at Mizzou sparked university-wide protests, a boycott by the school’s 4-5 football team, and eventually the resignation of the university’s president and chancellor. There’s only one problem: no evidence of the alleged incident, in which a poop swastika on the wall of a dormitory restroom was reported, has ever been made publicly available. (Mark Levin was going ballistic on this last night as well as Michael Savage.  Levin mentioned no Jews were upset.  Apparently, per this article, news of the "poop swastika" was spread by flyers on doors.  How factual.  But hey, it reminds POTUS of how he got started.  I have seen campus unrest in the 60s--profs had notes put on their cars, things tampered with, stolen.  One university president resigned over a protest when students wanted to perform a Greek play nude; he had a health condition and opted to have time with his family; there were also politics in play, typical. --Barb. When I was in the Senate, there was a Jewish member who went clinically batty. Among other while charges, before he went away for a rest, was that the Capitol Police had drawn Swastikas on his office walls. Of course, no such were ever found. ~Bob)

Here Is The Police Report From The Mizzou Poop Swastika Incident

Excerpt: Click’s resignation came one day after she joined protesting students in the school’s quadrangle who were angered over two incendiary on campus incidents, which led to the resignation of both the president of the school and later the chancellor. A courtesy appointment permits members of one academic department to serve on graduate committees for students from other academic departments. Click teaches mass media in the Communication Department. The School of Journalism is separate from the Communications Department. (Click still employed.  Only resigned from appointment to Journalism school whiles its faculty were meeting.  Still a "Professor of Communication."  The plot thickens--Hat tip Michael Savage.  See separate story. --Barb)

Missouri assistant professor resigns from courtesy appointment after confrontation with journalist
Excerpt: An assistant communications professor at the Missouri School of Journalism resigned from her courtesy appointment Tuesday after she was caught on video confronting a student journalist and attempting to block him from shooting photos on a public quad. (Per one talk radio host, Click's resume showed she taught classes in "50 Shades of Gray" and other ilk.  "Professor"?  "Courtesy appointment"?  Excuse me?  On what basis? --Barb. In the Brave New World, "journalists" will only take pictures or report news that is PC so as not to offend anyone. ~Bob)

The Cultural Revolution Comes to America’s Campuses. By Roger L Simon
Excerpt: Today’s undergraduates probably know little, if anything, about the cataclysmic movement in China known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. It began in 1966 before all of them (and even a great number of their professors) were born. This massive national crusade, instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong, was intended to create a pure communist man and woman, devoid of the constraints of materialism and personal ambition. It started with the closing of the schools and the re-education of intellectuals and the bourgeoisie and ended up with years of incredible violence, taking millions of lives. The actual statistics are still a state secret, but a recent biography of Mao states “at least 3 million people died violent deaths and post-Mao leaders acknowledged that 100 million people, one-ninth of the entire population, suffered in one way or another.”

Interesting: INSIDE JOB: MIZZOU’S NEW INTERIM PRESIDENT MADE ‘RACE-RELATIONS’ VIDEO WITH ACTIVIST LEADER
Excerpt: Mike Middleton, the man just named as the interim president of the University of Missouri, worked as a political activist with the protestors who forced out his predecessor. ... Middleton retired in August after teaching at the law school for 17 years. But he subsequently worked with the black protestors who created racial tensions by staging a series of direct actions designed to antagonize other students. (Missouri, run already by left-wing academia, will now go rapidly downhill financially and educationally. Which they will blame on racism. Or George Bush. Or Global Warming. But never take any responsibility. ~Bob)

ACTIVISTS ENFORCE SEGREGATION: 'BLACK-ONLY HEALING SPACE'
Mizzou's white students ordered to leave 'vulnerable' group
University of Missouri race activists have adopted a separate-but-equal philosophy for the creation of their “black only healing space.” Concerned Student 1950, the group behind Monday’s resignation of the university system’s president Timothy Wolfe, directed white people to leave a room on campus so black students could “be vulnerable and real.” (These groups are not interested in coexistence, peace, love or anything with whites.  They are driven by hate, with reparations dangled as bait and told they are owed everything, have to do nothing except take/steal/destroy.  This is not Christian nor Judeo-Christian.  Definitely related to Black Panther/Muslim credo of Black States of America; hence the burning of the American flag (no one hardly wears red/white/blue now though Cuban gymnasts did in Scotland) and raising of the black anarchy flag and the wearing of the colors of red/black.  They want to take what others have and kill those who own it.  This is anarchy, endorsed from above.  Add criminals released from prison and those allowed into the country repeatedly and the coming tide of Muslims; no wonder those who understand the future cry.  This is creeping, growing steadily as they are brainwashed by Soros-led groups to anarchy and as Mark Levin named it yesterday, "de-civilization."  What an accomplishment--the destruction of the USA.  Sad--as Ben Carson points out, when you cut into someone, the blood is the same color; nothing different. --Barb)

Why aren’t Hillary Clinton’s exaggerations of her life story bigger news? By Chris Cillizza, Washington Post

WaPo Fact Checker: Hillary Clinton’s claim that she tried to join the Marines. By Glenn Kessler
Excerpt: So far, we do not have enough documentary proof to say the incident never happened, such as supposedly landing under sniper fire in Bosnia or getting the date wrong for hearing a speech by Martin Luther King Jr.  (Both of these were written by Michael Dobbs, who originated The Fact Checker during the 2008 campaign.) This is simply a personal recollection — one that at least two friends have confirmed they had been told about at the time. But the circumstances are in question. She pitches it as a matter of public service, but her friends suggest it was something different. So at this point Clinton’s story is worthy of Two Pinocchios, subject to change if more information becomes available. (Remember when she said she was named after Edmund Hillary who reached Mt. Everest in May 1953? She was born in 1947. Instead of "psychopathic liar" how about using the line "Accomplished Liar." --Ray.)

Book Recommendation: Caliphate by Tom Kratman
I took this scary little Science Fiction novel with me over a weekend, visiting relatives, and stayed up very late Sunday morning finishing it at about 4:00 am. If you like SF adventure and are worried about the future of our world, check this one out. Kratman is a fine writer, and it was more gripping as it went on. Set 100 years in the future, when America has become of necessity a military empire facing the Muslim Caliphate of Europe, it lifts from today’s headlines to create a scary buy plausible future.

Appeals court rules against Obama immigration plan

Black Writer: Barack Obama is not seeking "legacy." By Sylvia Thompson
Excerpt: The term legacy carries positive connotations of something bequeath that is to the receiver's benefit. Everything that Barack Obama does is calculated to destroy America, which he despises. This man no more cares about legacy than he fears being properly prosecuted by the white political leaders whose responsibility it is to remove him from office. I focus on white leaders, because whites are still in the majority and they fill the majority of political offices. If the majority of political operatives were of some other ethnicity, I would lodge my complaint against that group. Ethnicity is an issue only because Obama is half-black and he uses that fact to intimidate guilt-conflicted white people. Otherwise, he would have been impeached and likely in prison for treason by now. (So they will smear her as an "Uncle Tom" rather than as a "Racist." ~Bob)

HUMANITY’S BEST DAYS IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. By Matt Ridley
I like the way he thinks. Yes, we are in "interesting times", and have important things to worry about, but there is still plenty of room for hope for the future. It will take perhaps some better leadership than we've been having, and of course there's always luck, we can still look forward to wonderful lives for our grandchildren. --Del. Wish I thought so. Jeb Bush’s Positive Plan to Reform Medicare. By John R. Graham
Excerpt: Jeb Bush’s Medicare reform contains two proposals — premium support and Health Savings Accounts — that will have a significant, positive effect on seniors’ access to care and Medicare’s finances. In particular, the proposals will address four flaws in Medicare Advantage, an alternative to traditional Medicare in which seniors choose a plan from a private insurer. Although Obamacare tried to cut seniors’ access to private plans, the use of these plans continues to grow. Before Obama took office, one-quarter of beneficiaries chose Medicare Advantage plans. Today, about one-third do. But despite their popularity, private Medicare plans do not live up to their potential for cost-effectiveness.

VOTING - A TEST OF AND FOR THE AGES. By Col. Andy Weddington, USMC (Ret)

Worth Subscribing to: Let’s Help Chris Matthews with Vocabulary and Definitions! By Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt
Sure, Chris Matthews is speaking off-the-cuff, but even by MSNBC standards, this is ridiculous: MATTHEWS: So you’re trying to insinuate that Marco Rubio, a fellow, uh, Spanish surname, I’m not sure the right word is Hispanic for them, because they are Cuban nationals or whatever, or come from Cuba. Let’s check Webster’s dictionary for “Hispanic”: of or relating to the people, speech, or culture of Spain or of Spain and Portugal 2: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the United States; especially: one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin Both Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are Hispanic. Now let’s look at “national” when used as a noun: a person who is a citizen of a country Rubio was born in Miami, Florida in 1971; Cruz was born in 1970 in Alberta, Canada. (He is considered a natural-born U.S. citizen because he was born to an American parent on foreign soil.) Neither one is a Cuban citizen and neither one qualifies as a “Cuban national.”

Why the Continuing Love Affair with Neophyte Candidates? By Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt
Bill Clinton ran in 1992 on a pledge to cut taxes on the middle class, then broke that promise once elected. In 2000, George W. Bush ran on a “humble” foreign policy. Barack Obama debuted on the national stage pledging to overcome the partisan divide, proclaiming, “There’s not a liberal America and a conservative America; there’s the United States of America.” (By 2012, Obama was running ads declaring Mitt Romney “isn’t one of us.”) In other words, the candidate you see on the campaign trail is not necessarily the kind of president you get in office. The Republican primary electorate seems distinctly uninterested in those who have experience in Washington; the perception seems to be that if you’ve been here as more than a tourist, you’re part of the problem. I can think of a wide range of conservatives on Capitol Hill who would bristle at the charge -- Trey Gowdy, Mick Mulvaney, Tim Scott, Jeff Sessions, Pat Toomey, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson. The idea that Ted Cruz is some sort of clubby Washington insider just because he works there doesn’t pass the laugh test. Bobby Jindal spent two terms in the U.S. House but is running on his Louisiana record, and he can’t seem to get a second look.

Lily’s girlfriend has a toddler she does not want to leave; Archel won’t leave his sister. Even the cookie-giver is less propitious than he seems: he symbolises, Sergeant Haney says ruefully, as he bins his gift, that paying lip-service to the armed forces, as opposed to doing military service, is all most Americans are good for. (You can bet it won't be the daughters of the liberal elites who want other people's daughters in the infantry. ~Bob)

U.S. STATE DRAWS LINE IN SAND AGAINST ISLAMIZATION. Counties lay out 'unwelcome' sign

Excerpt:  .... The issue came to light in March when World Relief, a Christian aid organization, announced it would be resettling 60 to 65 refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma, Rwanda, Iraq and Afghanistan throughout fiscal 2016. Some will eventually come from Syria as well. A “pocket of resistance” formed with local activists spreading the word that the Christian aid agency actually performs most of its “charity” work with federal grant money, and that most of the refugees are signed up for food stamps, subsidized housing and Medicaid, offered free schooling and other taxpayer-funded benefits.  The resistance grew, to the point where Secretary of State John Kerry sent his assistant secretary for global population and immigration, Ann Richard, to meet with local stakeholders this summer.

Pro-Amnesty Group Demands US Adopt “Bill of Rights for Undocumented Americans”
Excerpt: The court ruling on Obama's illegal amnesty is "in" and the injunction to halt Obama's illegal amnesty stands. However, Obama's lawdogs will continue to pursue lawlessness as they intend to follow the chain to the Supreme Court -- the "Black Robed Nine" who will overturn the circuit court's decision as it is the majority in their chamber that "rule" the united States. In the meantime, illegal alien invaders, through the pro-amnesty "United We Stand" nonprofit, created a "Bill of Rights for Undocumented Americans" they demand the entire nation adopt into the "law of the land."

The Clinton supporter in the audience in New Hampshire claimed to have been a former Hewlett-Packard employee who couldn’t stand Fiorina. He said that every time he saw her on TV, he wanted to reach through the screen and strangle her. Everyone around laughed, including Clinton, who responded with a guffaw, “I wouldn’t mess with you!”

Excerpt: Okay, Veterans Day has come and gone.  But, surely you can hear one more story. On January 17th, 2010, a group of military vets defied all the world aid bureaucrats, and all official warnings, and deployed into Haiti and began to immediately provide medical aid and bring food and water to hurricane victims.  These vets were in there before UN aid workers, before FEMA, before anyone. "When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon at the head of his legions and marched on Rome, it marked a point of no return. The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" has since survived in reference to any group committing itself to a risky course of action. On January 17th, 2010, despite government and large aid organization's advice not to proceed, Team Rubicon members crossed the Artibonite River separating the Dominican Republic and Haiti, carrying crucial gear and medical supplies to the people of Port-au-Prince. Once across, they were irrevocably committed to their task. Hence the name: Team Rubicon"
