Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for May 28, 2013

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for May 28, 2013
Robert A. Hall

Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Worth Reading: Colors - Bombs Bursting in Air. By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: Now and forever it's upon the shoulders of each new generation of American to follow their ancestor's lead - to dutifully obey our flag's summons, her call to service. Otherwise, Americans will one day be but a memory - of a different breed, a rare breed. And our United States lost.

Guest Post: On This Memorial Day

Guest Post: No one knows anything

Is this country mad? Why is Anjem Choudary, whose poisonous teachings influenced the Woolwich killers, free to draw benefits and tour BBC studios spouting murderous hatred against Britain? By Andrew Malone
Excerpt: As the awful events unfolded on the streets of Woolwich on Wednesday, the mobile phone secreted inside the black Islamic robes worn by Anjem Choudary — the self-styled Sheik of East London — soon started ringing. Calling him were producers from the BBC’s Newsnight programme, as well as rolling BBC news shows and Channel 4, all wanting to find out from this so-called ‘expert’ what exactly drove young, British-born men to hack an innocent young soldier to death in the capital with knives and a meat cleaver.

Woolwich attack: Michael Adebowale's mother 'tried to prevent radicalisation'
Excerpt: He was converted to Islam by the head Imam, and taken for weeks of "further training" at a centre near Cambridge. When he returned, however, he was even more "radicalised" and his mother could no longer "get through to him". A spokesman for the mosque said they did not know if he attended or been converted there. (His mother took him there to keep him from being "radicalized," and he returned more "radical" than ever. Is this mosque being investigated? If not, why not? --Robert Spencer, JihadWatch.Org)

Excerpt: A group of Massachusetts veterans say they are saddened by their city's decision to cancel an annual Memorial Day parade because not enough veterans are able to march in it.

Behold, The Fruits Of Liberalism – Muslims Gone Wild [Reader Post]
Excerpt: Behold, the fruits of liberalism. What idiots Westerners are for letting the Muslims in by the millions. The culture and traditions of Islam has no place in it for Democratic institutions, liberty, and the traditional culture of others. True Islam only provides three alternatives for all those it comes into contact with; conversion, submission, or death. (Graphic video with analysis; 1st murder to lure backup police in UK. –Barb)

2,000 Brits take to streets to honor fallen Squaddie, media attacks marchers
Excerpt: Drummer Lee Rigby of Her Majesty’s Royal Artillery was attacked while walking outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in the Woolwich area of south London just days ago. Two Muslim attackers first struck Drummer Rigby with their car, then when dazed and injured, they proceeded to butcher him with a meat cleaver and a butcher’s knife. The Afghan war vet was eventually very slowly publicly beheaded.

UK police arrest 3 more men in soldier's slaying
Excerpt: British police investigating the savage killing of an off-duty soldier in London have arrested three more suspects. Scotland Yard said counter-terrorism officers arrested two men, aged 24 and 28, at a residential address in southeast London. A third man, 21, was arrested separately on a London street at the same time.

French soldier stabbed while on patrol near Paris
Excerpt: A French soldier patrolling a business neighborhood west of Paris was stabbed in the neck and injured on Saturday by a man who fled the scene and is being sought by police, President Francois Hollande said. (Workplace violence is getting out of hand. ~Bob.)

Ben Carson: Not Too Late to Stop Obamacare
http://www.newsmax.com/newswidget/carson-obamacare-stop-irs/2013/05/23/id/506151?promo_code=11074-1&utm_source=11074Book_Worm_Room&utm_medium=nmwidget&utm_campaign=widgetphase1#ixzz2URoi9Qgy
Excerpt: Renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson cautioned on Thursday that putting the embattled IRS in charge of overseeing Obamacare was "probably not going to be good" and said that it was not too late to stop the Affordable Care Act. "Unfortunately, we don’t seem to be learning from our mistakes," … He suggested that legislators should now say "we're moving in the wrong direction" and "take stock of what we've learned here and use our collective intellect to figure out a way out of this rather than just continuing down a path of destruction."

Excerpt: Early Wednesday, while documenting the destruction after a night of rioting in the Stockholm suburb of Alby, a reporter from Fria Tider observed a parking enforcement officer writing a ticket for a burnt-out Ford. When questioned, the officer explained that the ticket was issued because the vehicle lacked a tag showing its time of arrival. The fact that the vehicle had been effectively destroyed – its windshield smashed and the interior heavily damaged by fire – was irrelevant according to the meter maid, who asked Fria Tider’s photographer to destroy the photos he had taken.

DOJ Begged Judge to Keep Fox Reporter in Dark About Monitoring
Excerpt: Meanwhile, Fox News President Roger Ailes on Thursday blasted Justice for targeting journalists as if they were criminals and said the government's seizure of reporters' emails and phone records would not stand "the test of law." “The administration’s attempt to intimidate Fox News and its employees will not succeed and their excuses will stand neither the test of law, the test of decency, nor the test of time,” Ailes said. “We will not allow a climate of press intimidation, unseen since the McCarthy era, to frighten any of us away from the truth.” (DOI—Barb)

Gingrich: Obama Terror Speech 'Breathtakingly Naive'
http://www.newsmax.com/newswidget/Gingrich-Obama-terror-speech/2013/05/26/id/506426?promo_code=11074-1&utm_source=11074Book_Worm_Room&utm_medium=nmwidget&utm_campaign=widgetphase1#ixzz2URsSDr00
Excerpt: No one wants to talk honestly about how big the threat is, how widespread it is, how fanatic it is, and how in its own mind, it's totally legitimate," he said. On the IRS scandal, Gingrich said the GOP faces a big moment. The opportunity exists for systemic change, he said, because "big government and big bureaucracy" is out of control. (Not naïve. Obvious what side he is on….Barb)

Sen. Coburn: Holder investigating DOJ a ‘total conflict of interest’
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/302027-sen-coburn-holder-investigating-doj-a-total-conflict-of-interest#ixzz2URtU2y18
Excerpt: Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) on Sunday said that Attorney General Eric Holder should not be in charge of investigating the Justice Department’s (DOJ) seizure of communication records of journalists who reported on classified information. “You cannot investigate yourself,” said Coburn on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “I think it’s a total conflict of interest.” (How brain dead are we supposed to be? Duh. --Barb)

Obama asks Holder to investigate Holder’s investigation
Excerpt: President Barack Obama has asked his friend Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate Holder’s unprecedented investigation of a Fox News reporter

Obama tours Oklahoma tornado damage, vows nation has 'your back’
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/302031-obama-tours-okla-tornado-damage-vows-nation-has-your-back#ixzz2URuGvpfr
Excerpt: President Obama visited tornado-hit Oklahoma on Sunday, telling residents that “we’ve got your back,” and vowing to help rebuild battered towns. “I promise you, we keep our word,” said the president. Obama toured the Oklahoma City area six days after a tornado killed 24 people, including 10 children, and wreaked massive destruction. (Heard one radio commentator with a very strong British accent commend O as “the consoling President” on a mission of mercy to Oklahoma. Nobody saying the non-green, gas-guzzling, nonstop-campaigning, never-waste-a-tragedy-opportunity, photo-op-loving-craving POTUS is off again for more group shots at tax payer expense. Now, if you believe the “we’ve got your back” just ask Fox News, AP, folks in NY and NJ post Sandy, those in Memphis post floods….any southern state….The only back he has is his own. Where is Pinocchio when you need him? --Barb)

Dems prepare game plan as House investigates Benghazi audit
http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/middle-east-north-africa/301967-dems-prepare-game-plan-for-benghazi-#ixzz2URxABZS6
Excerpt; Democrats say that hasn't stopped Issa from leaking a constant drip-drip of damaging allegations about Benghazi over the past few weeks. These include the revelation that the Obama administration ordered a special forces team in Tripoli to stand down before the attack was over. Republicans have faulted Pickering and his Accountability Review Board for not interviewing then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for last year's report into the terrorist attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. (What you don’t know will hurt you. But that’s okay. Just stick your head in this noose…it won’t hurt a bit. We’ve got your back….and your land, and your press, your internet, your phone records, your health records, tax records….your life. Don’t you feel safer? --Barb)

Durbin: No regrets calling out Crossroads to the IRS
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/302005-durbin-no-regrets-on-calling-out-crossroads-to-irs#ixzz2URyTjvr7
Excerpt: Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Sunday defended his decision to single out a key GOP group in a 2010 letter to the IRS. Durbin said Crossroads GPS, co-founded by Karl Rove, had been boasting about how much money they had been raising, and the role they were playing in the 2010 midterms….Durbin said he didn’t mention any liberal groups in his letter because an IRS examination into Crossroads would have put organizations across the political spectrum on notice.

Columbia School of Journalism dean: ‘The Obama administration is taking it a little bit far’
http://dailycaller.com/2013/05/25/columbia-school-of-journalism-dean-the-obama-administration-is-taking-it-a-little-bit-far/#ixzz2US24FzuZ
Excerpt: Reporters, as is their job, try to pry loose information that administrations don’t want out there. But I do think you do cross a line when you start using legal means to essentially spy on reporters.” Lemann said it wasn’t quite to the stage of being “Nixionian,” but in practice he said the Obama administration’s handling of the press is in some ways worse than former President Richard Nixon’s administration.

Excerpt: Some of the staunchest pro-Obama members of the liberal media were just seen entering the West Wing as a group today to no doubt receive their marching orders on how best to protect the Obama White House… Here’s a just posted tweet from White House reporter Ari Shapiro: “Other lefty columnists headed into the West Wing as a group. POTUS coffee? Carney meeting? Anyone?” The columnists spotted were Jonathan Capehart, Josh Marshall, and Ezra Klein, among others.

Worth Reading: Bystanders in their own fate. By Mark Steyn
Excerpt: If you're thinking of getting steamed over all that, don't. Simon Jenkins, the former editor of The Times of London, cautioned against "mass hysteria" over "mundane acts of violence." That's easy for him to say. Woolwich is an unfashionable part of town, and Sir Simon is unlikely to find himself there on an afternoon stroll. Drummer Rigby had less choice in the matter. Being jumped by barbarians with machetes is certainly "mundane" in Somalia and Sudan, but it's the sort of thing that would once have been considered somewhat unusual on a sunny afternoon in south London – at least as unusual as, say, blowing up 8-year-old boys at the Boston Marathon.

Suffering indignities from the party I embraced 25 years ago. By Star Parker
Excerpt: Now the indignities come from inside the party that I embraced 25 years ago. It was always the Democrats that were about interest group politics. Now Republicans have somehow concluded that their party's woes are because it once stood for something. So the game plan is to morph into the Democrats' stepsister.

Tone at the Top. By Linda Chavez
Excerpt: Lucky for Barack Obama, he's the president of the United States and not the CEO of a major corporation. If he were the latter, his board would be busy seeking a replacement about now. But the American people have no such recourse. We elected him, and we're stuck for another three years and eight months, no matter the scandals that emerge in his administration nor how incompetent a chief executive he proves to be.

Coercively correct: Another scandal, this one at the Dept. of Education. By George Will
Excerpt: Barack Obama, vowing to elevate Washington to the level of his fastidiousness, came from Chicago, where the political machine inoculates itself from scandals by the proliferation of them: Many scandals mean merely cursory scrutiny of most. Now, notice the scant attention being given to an assault on civil liberties by the misconceived Education Department’s misnamed Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

Australian National University bans Koran satire for fear of violent backlash. By Rachel Baxendale
Excerpt: THE Australian National University has cited international violence in the wake of the Danish cartoon and Innocence of Muslims controversies in justifying its decision to force student newspaper Woroni to pulp a satirical infographic which described a passage from the Koran as a "rape fantasy". (Guess the folks doing the musical comedy The Book of Mormon won't be doing one on the Qur'an anytime soon. ~Bob.)

Spitting hatred on YouTube: Thousands of terror videos urging British Muslims to maim and kill can be found within seconds online
Didn't get the "Islam is a Religion of Peace" memo. ~Bob. Excerpt: An investigation by the Mail has found an alarming number of Al Qaeda training videos and hate-filled sermons still being screened on the hugely popular film sharing website YouTube. This is despite YouTube’s claims that it has ‘community guidelines’ that prohibit ‘dangerous or illegal activities such as bomb making, hate speech and incitement to commit violent acts’ and only accepts ‘religious’ films.

Islamists attack Turkey 'kissing protest'
Excerpt: ISLAMIST EXTREMISTS attacked a group of kissing couples who locked lips in a Turkish metro station to protest a morality campaign by the authorities in Ankara, the local press reported on Sunday. One person was stabbed when about 20 Islamists chanting "Allah Akhbar" (God is Greatest) and some carrying knives attacked the demonstrators on Saturday, the Milliyet and Hurriyet newspapers reported.

Egypt: 3 women killed in suspected 'honor' crime
Happens all the time. It's just their culture. Who are you to judge? ~Bob. Excerpt: A mother and two daughters were allegedly killed by male relatives in southern Egypt who believed they'd had affairs, the latest apparent example of so-called "honor killings" in which women are slain for violating traditional morals in the conservative region, a security official said Friday.

British soldier murder suspect had been held in Kenya
Excerpt: One of the main suspects in the brutal murder of a soldier in London was arrested in Kenya more than two years ago for seeking terror training, it emerged on Sunday, after police made more arrests. Anti-terror investigators in France meanwhile were probing the stabbing of a soldier in Paris as he patrolled a busy shopping centre and transport hub on Saturday afternoon.

Worth Reading: A Memorial Day for Islamic Terror. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: In the middle of May, Prime Minister David Cameron was at Copley Square saying that we will never give in to the terrorists while praising the values of diversity and then two weeks later he was outside 10 Downing Street declaring that we will never give in to the terrorists and praising Islam. The places had changed but the script hadn’t. Listen long enough and you realize that every politician is working from the same script.

Honoring veterans as monuments decay, funds dry up
Isn't it strange how we can send billions of dollars of aid and military hardware to our enemies, and piss away more billions on politically connected "green energy" companies making pinwheels and solar shingles, but can't provide the pittance it would take for the upkeep of these historic monuments? - LLW

Climate Change: We really don't need to waste all this money. James Delingpole.
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100218831/climate-change-we-really-dont-need-to-waste-all-this-money/
Excerpt: "Don't just do something: stand there!" Ronald Reagan was fond of telling overactive functionaries. The same rules apply to the climate change industry: trillions of dollars squandered, vast forces mobilised, public anxieties worked up to fever pitch – all to no useful purpose whatsoever. That's why – belatedly: there really isn't much time left – I'm urging you to support this hugely worthwhile new film project being organised by Lord Monckton.[I've just learned that the Real Madrid superstar soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo (dos Santos Aveiro) was named after Ronald Reagan by his cook mother and gardener father. Guess they didn't know they were oppressed. Kate.]

Come on. Haven't you ever overlooked a few million in income? ~Bob

Savages of Stockholm. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Europe has many fine traditions. Its newest tradition is the burning car. Why burn cars? Because, as George Mallory once said of mountains, they're there. There are lots of cars around and if you're a member of a perpetually unemployed tribe that wandered up north and forages on social services, you might as well do something to pass the time. (Giveaways of tax payer money amount to involuntary servitude and that is unconstitutional. It is why western democracies are failing economically. We now pay Americans $1 trillion not to work and call that social justice. The rest of the West has the same system and is also failing, largely as a result. There are 2 choices for the West:--An all-out revolt against our Marxist keepers--Generalized bankruptcy Either way, it ends. But who is in power after the fall will be determined by which choice we make. --Don Hank)

A Battering Ram Becomes a Stonewall. By Peggy Noonan
Excerpt: "I don't know." "I don't remember." "I'm not familiar with that detail." "It's not my precise area." "I'm not familiar with that letter." These are quotes from the Internal Revenue Service officials who testified this week before the House and Senate. That is the authentic sound of stonewalling, and from the kind of people who run Washington in the modern age—smooth, highly credentialed and unaccountable.

Now it's a social worker for every child - in Scotland
Excerpt: For anyone familiar with how our “child protection” system too often works in practice, rather loud alarm bells might be rung by a Bill currently going through the Scottish Parliament that takes the state’s intervention in family life to a startling new level. Under the Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill, every child from birth will be given a “named person”, charged with keeping an eye on that child’s interests until it reaches adulthood.
