Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for January 21, 2013

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for January 21, 2013
Robert A. Hall
Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Important: Death Toll Climbs Past 80 In Siege In The Sahara. By Aomar Ouali And Elaine Ganley
Excerpt: The death toll from the terrorist siege at a natural gas plant in the Sahara climbed past 80 on Sunday as Algerian forces searching the refinery for explosives found dozens more bodies, many so badly disfigured it was unclear whether they were hostages or militants, a security official said. (As CAIR's pro-Islam PR campaign asks, "That's #MyJihad. What's yours?" ~Bob.)

Collapse Response
Dear Mr. Hall: As I mentioned to you in my e-mail from 12/14/12, I had your very, very good book delivered for Christmas through Amazon.com. I am almost finished with it and do not wish it to come to an end. It is superb and to the point. One could write a book on each issue dealt within it. I will share it with family and friends. Best wishes, Dr. Albert -----.

Worth Seeing: Americans Rally Nationwide Against Stricter Gun Control Measures — Here Are The Pictures
I especially liked the picture of the Massachusetts State House. The State Senate Chamber is just behind the Greek columns at the top. I have stood on that balcony on the right many nights to get fresh air during late debates. Bob Hall, Massachusetts Senate, 1973-83.)

Biden’s claim of brush with gun massacre questioned
Excerpt: Vice President Joseph R. Biden's claim that he heard the gunshots of a 2006 school massacre while playing golf is raising questions about his veracity or his memory. Mr. Biden told a meeting of mayors in Washington Thursday that he was about a quarter-mile away from an Amish schoolhouse on Oct. 2, 2006, when a gunman shot and killed five students and wounded five others. ... But a search of maps of the area in Lancaster County, Pa., shows the nearest golf course to the site of the shooting, Moccasin Run Golf Club, is about five miles away. (I'm sure it's true, and that he was with Hillary under fire in the Balkans and Kerry in Cambodia at not-yet-president Nixon's orders on Christmas in 1967. ~Bob.

Ret. Marine Absolutely Owns CNN Anchor On 2nd Amendment

Both Sides in Gun Debate Agree: Punish Background-Check Liars
Excerpt: Nearly 80,000 Americans were denied guns in 2010, according to Justice Department data, because they lied or provided inaccurate information about their criminal histories on background-check forms. Yet only 44 of those people were charged with a crime. (The other 7,956 went on to try to buy a gun someplace else. Can we not enforce the laws we have before we pass new laws? ~Bob.)

57% Think Enforcing Current Gun Laws More Important Than Creating New Laws
Excerpt: Most Americans feel it is more important for the government to enforce existing gun control laws than to create new ones. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 32% of American Adults believe creation of new gun control laws is more important. Fifty-seven percent (57%) think more emphasis should be put on stricter enforcement of existing gun control laws.

Obama’s ATF Nominee on DOJ’s Fast And Furious Design Team
Excerpt: As part of President Barack Obama’s 23-point gun control plan, he nominated Minnesota U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones–who currently doubles right now as the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives–to be the ATF director. Jones was personally a part of the high-ranking Department of Justice unit that first met on October 26, 2009, to create the new DOJ policy that was used to justify “gunwalking” in Operation Fast and Furious. In Fast and Furious, the ATF “walked” roughly 2,000 firearms into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels.

Excerpt: Earlier this week as part of his 23 executive actions on gun control, President Obama nominated ATF Acting Director Todd B. Jones for a permanent position as ATF Director. Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Darrell Issa is expressing concerns over Jones' nomination due to his involvement and failure of leadership in the fallout of the Fast and Furious scandal. (Obama is right back at it again, appointing less qualified people to important positions because they are willing tools of his ideology. ATF is mired in deep mess because of bad and perhaps political judgment and policies, and desperately needs a super clean Director whose background is entirely in nonpolitical exercise of the laws. Instead we are given another one of Obama's selected good guys. --Del)

Murderous 'monster' acquires an arsenal: The Oberender case exposes loopholes in national gun laws and Minnesota's background checks.
Excerpt: Just two days earlier, Olson had scanned the day's shift reports and froze when he tripped over Oberender's name. A scan of a Facebook page then showed firearms spread out like a child's trophies on a bed inside the home, along with notes about the Newtown, Conn., gunman who shot 20 children to death. (This is a scary example of how a very, very unqualified person can still get around the system and obtain weapons. Thank heavens the sheriff picked up on the situation and acted properly and fast. From the man's fragmentary comments about "the other" his deck was scrambled and missing a lot of the face cards. Yet he was smart enough to play the system and get his guns. And somehow he had access to serious money, his collection of guns cost way up in the thousands of dollars. It seems clear that when he finally went off and let "the other" loose, the death toll would have been substantial. Will they let him loose again? I hope not. --Del)

What Obama Really Believes About The Second Amendment: People Shouldn’t Have Guns
http://freedomoutpost.com/2013/01/what-obama-really-believes-about-the-second-amendment-people-shouldnt-have-guns/
Excerpt: Barack Hussein Obama just cannot be clear on the Second Amendment, at least in his rhetoric. In one breath he says he respects it, but with his votes in the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate and, ultimately, how he has responded in the office of President, he has demonstrated that he is utterly against it. His rhetoric has been all over the map on the issue, but one thing we must keep in mind and that is what is his ideology and what has been his voting record when it comes to the Second Amendment.

Watch Assassin’s Gun Jam, Beaten by Crowd
Excerpt: A Bulgarian politician today survived an extraordinary assassination attempt when a man stormed the stage and held a gun to his head as he was giving a speech.

Pennsylvania girl, 5, suspended for threatening to shoot girl with pink toy gun that blows soapy bubbles
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/01/19/pennsylvania-girl-5-suspended-for-threatening-to-shoot-girl-with-pink-toy-gun/#ixzz2IZECsmcz
Excerpt: A 5-year-old Pennsylvania girl who told another girl she was going to shoot her with a pink Hello Kitty toy gun that blows soapy bubbles has been suspended from kindergarten. Her family has hired an attorney to fight the punishment, which initially was 10 days for issuing a 'terroristic threat.'

Actor says 2nd Amendment Created to Defend Against Slave Revolts
http://politicaloutcast.com/2013/01/actor-says-2nd-amendment-created-to-defend-against-slave-revolts/
Excerpt: A meme is going around by a number of people claiming that the Second Amendment — “the right to bear arms” — was put in the Constitution to protect slavery. The following is from actor Danny Glover who spoke to a group of students at a Texas A&M University:(He apparently doesn't know our history or is purposely spinning it for his own benefit. --Jer

Holder Calls for ‘Tough Penalties on Gun Traffickers’…Is This Guy For Real?
Excerpt: Attorney General Eric Holder, during a talk on gun control with United States mayors on Friday, said that the U.S. government will consider “imposing tough penalties on gun traffickers who help funnel weapons to dangerous criminals.”

International Hacker Group, Anonymous, Threatens Obama With Treason
Here's a fascinating thing, the generally Liberal activist hackers' group comes down 100% on the side of the 2nd Amendment, uses actual examples of gun use to save people, and ultimately says anyone in office is obliged to support the 2nd Amendment or be termed guilty of treasonous behavior against the American people. It seems this bunch of Liberals actually understand the importance of being able to resist a tyrannical government, and that the people's right to have weapons is not about hunting, but about the protection of the people against all threats, including those who are attempting to exercise power over them that is unconstitutional. Interesting. --Del

Excerpt: We all know that whenever liberal politicians start insisting that guns are evil, it’s for the same reason that stage magicians employ patter, top hats and silk capes. It’s done in order to distract us.

Other News:

Why Terrorists Love The Blind Sheikh. By Andrew McCarthy
Excerpt: He is thought of internationally as somebody who is virtually without equal in facing down the United States in particular. That’s not just because of the 1993 Trade Center bombing and the plots that occurred right after that to try to take out New York City landmarks but the fact that Osama bin Laden, someone else that was thought very highly of as an iconic figure in the international jihad, attributed to Abdel Rahman the credit for issuing the fatwa that approved the 9/11 attacks. So he’s a singular figure in this global movement and that’s why really since we imprisoned him in the summer of 1993 they’ve been agitating for his release.

Call Time For Congress Shows How Fundraising Dominates Bleak Work Life
Excerpt: The daily schedule prescribed by the Democratic leadership contemplates a nine or 10-hour day while in Washington. Of that, four hours are to be spent in "call time" and another hour is blocked off for "strategic outreach," which includes fundraisers and press work. An hour is walled off to "recharge," and three to four hours are designated for the actual work of being a member of Congress -- hearings, votes, and meetings with constituents. (republicans do it too. If you aren't raising money, a challenger who is will replace you. I do not have an answer to this. Public financing? Sure--take it out of the budget surplus! ~Bob.)

Excerpt: Nonetheless, Obama officials keep doing the victory dance over an al-Qaeda that they repeatedly imply is on the verge of extinction. …This astounding manifestation of an overconfidence of Baghdad Bob proportions, or else of a capitulation attempting to disguise itself as a victory, is bitterly ironic coming at a time when al-Qaeda is anything but on the ropes: in fact, it is “carving out its own state” in Mali, with so much success that last Friday the French launched airstrikes in hopes of stopping its advance and its consolidation of power in the vast areas it already controls. (See next piece. ~Bob.)

Belmokhtar claims Algerian raid, slaying of hostages for al Qaeda. By Bill Roggio
Excerpt: Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the head of the jihadist brigade that launched the deadly suicide assault on the In Amenas gas facility in southeastern Algeria, has claimed the attack in al Qaeda's name.
Marines studying mindfulness-based training
Excerpt: The U.S. Marine Corps, known for turning out some of the military's toughest warriors, is studying how to make its troops even tougher through meditative practices, yoga-type stretching and exercises based on mindfulness. (Despite the media's "Mad-dog, knuckle-dragger" image, the Corps, of necessity, has always been the most innovative and intellectual service. ~Bob.)

CBS News Political Director’s Astonishing Advice: Obama ‘Must Go For The Throat,’ ‘Pulverize’ & ‘Declare War’ On The GOP. By Madeleine Morgenstern
Excerpt: President Barack Obama needs to “pulverize” and “destroy” his Republican opponents if he wants to leave any kind of legacy — according to CBS News’ political director. “Go for the throat!” declares the title of John Dickerson’s latest column for Slate, posted Friday. Its subtitle: “Why if he wants to transform American politics, Obama must declare war on the Republican Party.” (And we in the unbiased, neutral, fair and balanced media will help all we can. ~Bob.)

In Libya: Why the Benghazi Investigation Is Going Nowhere. By Vivienne Walt
Excerpt: Yet the political furor, which now threatens to hold up President Obama’s national-security nominations, stands in stark contrast to the response in Libya itself. There, Libyans say, the investigation is nonoperational, if not effectively dead, with witnesses too fearful to talk and key police officers targeted for violent retribution.

GAO report: US on ‘unsustainable long-term fiscal path’
Excerpt: The Government Accountability Office warned in a report that if cuts are not made to mandatory spending — including Social Security and Medicare — there will be a fundamental gap between spending and revenue as more baby boomers retire.

The Girl of My Dreams. By Gail Collins
Excerpt: And now we have Manti Te’o, the star linebacker for Notre Dame, whose dying girlfriend turned out to be imaginary. But imaginary with a lot of team spirit.

Were US Marines Used as Guinea Pigs on Okinawa?
Excerpt: Corroborating suspicions that Project 112 tests were conducted on Okinawa is the inclusion on the Pentagon's list of at least one U.S. veteran exposed on the island. "Sprayed from numbered containers" reads the Project 112 file on former marine Don Heathcote. Heathcote, a private first class stationed on Okinawa's Camp Hansen in 1962, clearly remembers the circumstances in which he was exposed.

Excerpt: When President Obama takes the oath of office for the second time, he will also usher in a new era in American power politics. Whereas the old left-wing definition of “who rules” focused on large corporations, banks, energy companies and agribusinesses, the Obama-era power structure represents a major transformation. This shift stems, in large part, from the movement from a predominately resource and tangible goods-based economy to an information-based one.

Excerpt: "Google just purchased a 2.4-acre plot in the King's Cross Central development in London, where the company plans to build a brand-new, 1 million square foot office. Google reportedly invested about £650 million ($1.04 billion) on the property, which, when finished, will be valued at more than £1 billion ($1.6 billion). While Google traditionally leases its overseas offices, the company's decision to buy rather than rent in this case was likely tax motivated, since Google can't repatriate its cash to the U.S. without paying a hefty tax." (Wow, after taking 10's of million$ of U.S. tax dollars in "green" energy funds... Google has decided to build new HQ overseas to avoid paying U.S. taxes. -Chris)
