Old Jarhead's Political
SitRep for January 19, 2013
Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please
forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for
“Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion,
which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three
hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses
my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post
articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and
discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with
every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the
information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to
post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point,
but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you
must read critically and with skepticism.

Gun Control seems to have become a bit of an issue…
Comment on new gun laws
Let’s see, the Newtown
shooter stole his guns, so laws against stealing didn’t help. Stealing them
avoids a back ground check, so that didn’t help. (Note to papers publishing the
names and addresses of lawful gun owners to aid thieves.) He took them to a
gun-free zone, so that didn’t help. CT has a law against the type of rifle he
used, so that didn’t help. And murder is illegal in CT, so that didn’t help. So
what do we do? Better enforce the laws we have? No, too hard. Let’s pass more
laws like the above. ~Bob
President Obama – A Gun Owner’s Best Friend. By Skip Coryell
http://clashdaily.com/2013/01/president-obama-a-gun-owners-best-friend/
http://clashdaily.com/2013/01/president-obama-a-gun-owners-best-friend/
Excerpt: He shared with me what caused his transition, how
he’d gone from a totally gun-free home to a man ready to buy two guns and sign
up for a concealed carry class.
He told me that a few days prior, in his own neighborhood,
there had been a home invasion. An elderly couple in their eighties had been
shot to death. It was a low-crime, upscale community. His son heard about it
and came to him and asked, “Dad, what happens if they break into our house?”
Obama vs. ‘the Gun
Lobby.’ After 23 executive actions, Obama fails to address the
problems he identifies. By Katrina Trinko
Excerpt: “It’s not enough,” Keene says of the 1,000 security guards.
“What [Obama] talks about doing in terms of the violently mentally ill, they’re
going to have a study, they’re not going to reform the mental-health-care
system in this country. They’re not going to deal with school
security. They’re going to throw a bone and a word in that direction, so they
can pursue their real agenda, which is [undercutting] the Second Amendment.”
Biden to NRA: We
‘don’t have the time’ to prosecute gun buyers who lie on background checks

That’s the Democrats. More laws, but less enforcement. ~Bob.
Excerpt: During the National Rifle Association’s meeting with
Vice President Joe Biden and the White House gun violence task force, the vice
president said the Obama administration does not have the time to fully
enforce existing gun laws.
The Story of a Man
Who Only Had 7 Rounds in His Pistol
Well told, but maybe just a story. ~Bob
How the NRA is
winning. By Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2013/01/18/how-the-nra-is-winning/?wpisrc=nl_politics
Excerpt: But, there’s also
plenty of evidence to suggest that the NRA is regarded entirely differently
in the country at large. Polling conducted
by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal this week showed 41 percent
of people had a favorable opinion of the NRA, while 34 percent viewed it
unfavorably, a margin largely unchanged from a similar survey conducted in
January 2011. (My problem with the NRA is that, as a one-issue group, they are
willing to support people who are terrible for the country, like Harry Reid,
just because he helped them on the gun issue. ~Bob.)
WaPo: Gun control debate may be driving higher sales
May be? Obama—gun salesman of the century. ~Bob. Excerpt:
The United States
appears to be experiencing a record run on military-style assault weapons,
high-capacity magazines and some kinds of ammunition as buyers deluge stores in
search of guns and bullets they fear will be banned by the Obama
administration, according to firearms industry executives and market analysts. Even
allowing for spikes in gun sales that follow every mass killing in the United States
and attendant political debates about gun control, industry executives said the
surge seems unprecedented.
… One other thing -- you notice I rarely if ever name the
shooters in cases like these. As mentioned above, I think one of the motives of
these shooters -- at least to the point we can ever understand the motives of
people like this -- is infamy, a certain fame, a certain sense of empowerment
from knowing that everyone who ignored them or mocked them will suddenly care a
great deal about what they thought and how they felt, even if it occurs after
they're dead or behind bars. So if everyone in the media would learn to stop
writing extensive profiles of these mass murderers, looking at every detail of
their pre-massacre lives as if there was something the whole public deserved to
know (as opposed to say, criminologists) we would probably have less of them. I
know the media doesn't think they're glamorizing and celebrating the killers in
their coverage, but in the mindset of the deeply troubled, they are; they're
turning them into celebrities. And if there's anything our modern society
values, it's being famous.
Additions to be made
to gun laws for law enforcement
Excerpt: A troubling oversight has been found within New York State 's sweeping new gun laws. The ban
on having high-capacity magazines, as it's written, would also include law
enforcement officers. (Legislate in haste, repent in the media. ~Bob.)
Excerpt: To be effective, the response to Newtown cannot be a hasty “Do
something—anything” response. That’s why Heritage experts have taken the time
to consider the complex problems involved. In a new report, senior legal fellow John Malcolm and director
of domestic policy studies Jennifer Marshall acknowledge: The serious work to
make society safer and stronger after events like the December 2012 Newtown
massacre requires that constitutional and complex cultural factors be taken
into consideration and that policy be based on a serious study of all of the
evidence.

Bob Schieffer somehow managed to top MSNBC host Chris

President Obama's gun control press Schieffer became the worst caricature of a

Gun Violence is Not a Republican Problem, It’s a Democratic
Problem. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: 67% of firearm murders took place in the country’s
50 largest metro areas. The 62 cities in those metro areas have a firearm
murder rate of 9.7, more than twice the national average. Among teenagers the
firearm murder rate is 14.6 or almost three times the national average. … Obama
won every major city in the election, except for Jacksonville
and Salt Lake City .
And the higher the death rate, the bigger his victory.
Weather Underground
Terrorist Bernadine Dohrn Lectures America About Guns
Excerpt: Here’s further proof that the American left has
brass cojones the size of basketballs. Bernadine Dohrn, the wife of Bill
Ayers, who is herself also a former member of the domestic terrorist group the
Weather Underground, is now joining the chorus of
liberals calling for greater gun control. No word yet on how she feels
about bomb control…
Holder Begs Court to
Stop Document Release on Fast and Furious
Excerpt: Getting beyond the Obama administration’s
smokescreen, this lawsuit is about a very simple principle: the public’s right
to know the full truth about an egregious political scandal that led to the
death of at least one American and countless others in Mexico . The
American people are sick and tired of the Obama administration trying to
rewrite FOIA law to protect this president and his appointees. Americans want
answers about Fast and Furious killings and lies.
After Trump, Chuck
Norris Also Endorses Netanyahu
Excerpt: “Israel has
true friends all over the world, and there is support and deep appreciation for
Binyamin Netanyahu as prime minister and leader,” he noted. In the video
released Thursday, Norris is heard saying, “You might think I’m a tough guy in
my films, but in a rough neighborhood like the Middle East, Israel has
its own tough guy. His name is Bibi Netanyahu.”
Excerpt: War-ravaged Syria has accused Turkey
of receiving stolen goods from armed groups, who it said plundered some 1,000
factories in the industrial city of Aleppo ,
and called on the United Nations to condemn its neighbor's involvement. Syria 's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said in
a letter to the U.N. Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,
released on Thursday, that armed groups "transferred the stolen goods
to Turkey, with the full knowledge of the Turkish
Government." (You’d think, being members of a Religion of Peace,
they could all get along. ~Bob)
65% See Gun Rights As
Protection Against Tyranny
Excerpt: The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone
survey finds that 65% of American Adults think the purpose of the Second
Amendment is to make sure that people are able to protect themselves from
tyranny. Only 17% disagree, while another 18% are not sure.
Another:
The Truth About “Assault Weapons”
Excerpt:
In the United States
today Americans lawfully own an estimated 20-30 million rifles which are
commonly used and often misconstrued by the media, politicians, and gun control advocates as “assault rifles.” Here are some facts about these rifles. Thanks to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) for some of the
facts below: (note
that the NSSF has labeled these rifles
“Modern Sporting Rifles” (MSR). Also note: there is an estimated 100 Million lawfully
owned rifles of all types in the United States . (The Gun
Owner's Action League of Massachusetts was founded back in the 1970s, when the
Commonwealth was going through one of its periodic gun-hating cycles. Although
they are "non-partisan," because of the issues they're concerned
with, they are usually on the same side as the rest of us conservatives. This is an interesting list of facts and
statistics they recently published. Note that you won’t change the mind of
any dedicated gun-grabber, but you might influence the thinking of anyone who
believes in evidence rather than “how they feel.” --Ron P. GOAL supported my campaigns. ~Bob.)
Excerpt: Forty-one percent of adults see the NRA -- the
nation's top gun lobby -- in a positive light, while 34 percent view it in a
negative light. By comparison, just 24 percent have positive feelings about the
entertainment industry, and 39 percent have negative ones.

York just gave us another excuse to say that,” [Attorney General]
Abbott, a Republican, said on Thursday, after ads extolling Texas appeared on several media websites.
Chris Christie Slams
‘Reprehensible’ NRA
Excerpt: We seem to be getting closer to the announcement of
Chris Christie switching his party affiliation to the Democrat Party. The
latest RINO statement from the governor really takes the cake in the current
debate. Maybe someday Christie will realize that conservative values are what
made this great nation and that defending our children is what it the topic is
all about.
Jay Carney: Obama
“Committed to the Second Amendment”
http://politicaloutcast.com/2013/01/jay-carney-obama-committed-to-the-second-amendment/
Excerpt: Obama’s well-groomed lapdog Jay Carney insisted to reporters that the President is “committed to the 2nd Amendment”: “First of all, the president of the United States believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual’s right to bear arms…He has been explicit about this…And throughout his time in office he has made clear that he believes we ought to take commonsense and enact commonsense measures that protect our Second Amendment rights but prevent people who should not have weapons from obtaining them. So his commitment to the Second Amendment I think is very clear.”

3-D Printed Guns
If this becomes real, we better all have carry rights. ~Bob.
Excerpt: Curiously, wherever the Klan became a political
force, gun control laws would suddenly appear on the books. This will give you
an idea of how gun control laws worked. Following the firebombing of his house
in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King, who was, among other things, a Christian
minister, applied for a gun permit, but the Alabama authorities found him unsuitable.
Worth Reading :
Black history and the Second Amendment. By John Bender
Excerpt: Unable to disband either the local NAACP branch or
the local NRA branch, the Klan decided to mount a full, armed assault on Dr.
Perry’s home. They thought they could bring down the groups by eliminating
their most influential leader. The local NRA branch heard about the planned
raid and quickly called a meeting to be held at the doctor’s house on that
night. Well armed men showed up at the doctor’s house and prepared for the
assault they knew was coming.
But there is other news…
Excerpt: You may agree 100 percent with the president’s
position on gun control, but his stagey histrionics, his endless reliance upon
human props, his cheap sloganeering, his emotionally driven hectoring: all of
that bespeaks a very deep contempt for his audience, which is the American
people. If he really believes that surrounding himself with adorable little
tots is a substitute for substantive arguments for well-thought-out policy
proposals, he thinks that the people — you people — are a bunch of rubes.
As Rescue Operation
Continues in Algeria ,
Fate of Hostages Remains Unclear
Excerpt: The Algerian military operation began on Thursday
without consultation with the foreign governments whose citizens worked at the
plant. It has been marked by a fog of conflicting reports, compounded by the
remoteness of the gas plant, near a town called In Amenas hundreds of miles
across the desert from the Algerian capital, Algiers , and close to the Libyan border.
Excerpt: The mass kidnapping at a BP (formerly British
Petroleum) gas site near the Libyan border, which may very well have been
accomplished with U.S.-supplied weapons left over from the ouster of the late
Muammar Qaddafi in Libya ,
seems to be a spillover from a failed French drive to remove Islamist militants
from nearby Mali .
(Is it just me, or was Algeria
a better place to live when it was a Department of France? ~Bob.)

You Cannot Be More
Liberal Than a Liberal. By Sultan Knish
Excerpt: So after a long bout of mocking Mitt Romney for
saying that he sought out binders full of qualified female appointees, complete
with protesters outside one of his campaign offices dressed in binders, the
appointed hour came and the new cabinet of the man who was too good for binders
of women was white and male. There was some awkward fidgeting in the media. A
few suggestions that maybe there should be a little more diversity.
Excerpt: Keynesian policy requires an expansionist Central State and Bank bent on imposing central

print-borrow-blow policies. Here is the standard Keynesian cargo-cult analysis
of our economic woes:
Hurricane Sandy Victims Say Red Cross Abandoned Them
PIX 11- A number of families left homeless by Hurricane
Sandy, claim they are getting a royal runaround from agencies in their efforts
to get disaster relief. A group, representing 120 families who were evacuated
from Far Rockaway, staged a protest outside the Manhattan headquarters of the American Red
Cross. They chanted, “Red Cross, Double Cross.” …. Protest
organizer Errol Riley said the situation is mired in bureaucracy with everyone
“passing the buck.” (What’s the Red Cross doing with all the Sandy $$ they keep soliciting? --Barb. My
dad used to claim that in WWII, the Red Cross gave them coffee, donuts and
cigarettes, had a PR photo taken, then took it back unless they could pay for
it. Dunno, I wasn't there, but he never gave them a cent. ~Bob.)

he killed Terry, turned himself in on Wednesday on charges related to a

Excerpt: A girl of 11 was sold to a child trafficker who
branded her with his initial, a court heard yesterday. Mohammed Karrar, 38, also
loaned her to abusers around the country for £600 an hour, it was alleged. Over
five years she was repeatedly raped by large groups of men in what she
described as ‘torture sex’, the jury was told. (Now, just because the Qur'an
makes sex with slave girls lawful [“that which your right hand possesses”],
don't go all Islamophobic over this. But if you shoot the critter, I'll swear
we were playing poker at the time. Don’t think it can happen here? See the book
below. ~Bob.)
The Hand of the Prophet: A Novel of Islamic America , 2053
By the year 2053, large parts of the United States
have fallen under the rule of fanatical, home-grown Sunni Muslims, who have
established the Islamic Republic of America, an Islamic theocracy under Shari’a
religious law. Now, the Christians are
the terrorists. All author's profits from this book are donated to a
charity to help those who have suffered in the War on Terror.
Here, there and
everywhere: After decades of sending work across the world, companies are
rethinking their offshoring strategies, says Tamzin Booth
Excerpt: But now companies are rethinking their global

“arbitrage” that sent companies rushing overseas is running out.
Poll: Voters
pessimistic as Obama prepares for second inauguration. By Peter Schroeder
Excerpt: President Obama is entering his second term with
many of the nation’s voters still pessimistic or unsure about their economic
prospects, a new poll for The Hill has found. (I would have felt pessimistic if
Romney had won. Since Obama won, I feel clinically hopeless. ~Bob.)
Revenue-Based
Financing for Our Crumbling Infrastructure System
Excerpt: The Reason Foundation recently released a policy
brief rethinking how America
pays for and manages its transportation infrastructure. Current investments in
infrastructure construction and repair are funded through capital investments
from operating cash flows. With across-the-board funding cuts looming in the
midst of the ongoing fiscal crisis, a report by the National Commission on
Fiscal Responsibility and Reform has suggested that each transportation mode
should be self-supporting through direct user fees, says Robert Poole, the
Searle Freedom Trust Transportation Fellow and director of transportation
policy at the Reason Foundation.
Excerpt: French President Francois Hollande has effectively
tied Barack Obama’s hands by going into Mali . That’s only fair because
Obama’s actions in Libya precipitated
the crisis in the Sahara to a great
extent. Now, with its key interests threatened, France is committed to a
campaign of vast proportions.
Excerpt: But Obama either has misread his reelection as a
mandate (e.g., Republicans maintained control of the House and the majority of
state governorships and legislatures; Obama, unlike most second-term
presidents, received fewer votes than in 2008, fewer in fact then John McCain
received), or he believes that his progressive legacy lies in ramming through
change by any means necessary to obtain results that are neither possible
through legislative compromise nor supported by majorities of the American
people. Consider the reckoning Obama will soon have in the following areas:
Excerpt: Another January, another Congress, another plethora
of bills aimed at changing the Constitution. And it goes beyond the standard
drive of fiscal conservatives to add a balanced budget amendment to the
nation’s guiding document. One New York Democrat — incidentally, a chum of
Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, who was able to remove every barrier to a
lifetime presidency except his current illness — re-introduced a bill on the
second day of the 113th Congress to remove presidential term limits.
Excerpt: One specific item Sadowski noted was the $154,000
video communication system that he felt "wasn't billable to the Hurricane
Sandy" relief fund and could not be delivered until long after Sandy recovery efforts are to be finished. ….He also
could not find the location of $1 million in kosher meals bought for Sandy victims and
was directly told to stop looking into that expense. …State officials say that
Sadowski exceeded his authority by conducting an audit, but Sadowski felt that
part of his procurement job included accounting for and tracking the
expenditures.
Excerpt: A petition accusing Pakistan 's

States of committing blasphemy has been
filed with the country's Supreme Court. Police were directed on Thursday
to investigate allegations against Sherry Rehman, who has already faced death
threats from militants after calling for reforms to the country's anti-blasphemy
law, according to court documents. (She may want to think about staying here…
~Bob.)
Didn’t get the “Islam is a Religion of Peace” memo. ~Bob.
Excerpt: A Chicago businessman was sentenced to
14 years in prison Thursday for providing material support to overseas terrorism,
including a Pakistani group whose 2008 attacks in Mumbai , India ,
left more than 160 people dead. …. "There's not much worse than mass
murder of this scale," he said of the plot, which was not ultimately
carried out.
Rape victims 'enjoy
it,' Indonesia
Supreme Court hopeful suggests
Excerpt: Daming Sanusi made the inflammatory remarks Monday
while being interviewed by a parliamentary panel for a seat on the Supreme
Court. When asked whether rapists should be put to death, Daming joked that
because both the rapist and the victim “enjoy it,” the court should think twice
about imposing the death penalty. (Only if it’s not, in leftist Whoopi’s
phrase, “rape rape.” ~Bob.)

its debt limit. Geithner says in a letter to congressional
leaders that the move will free up $156 billion in borrowing
authority while Congress debates increasing the $16.4 trillion debt limit.
The government reached its borrowing limit on Dec. 31, but began using

Excerpt: Price also categorically rejects Obama’s
assertion that his administration has taken great strides in cutting spending
over the past four years…. “This is an administration that has been in charge
when we’ve had the largest increase in absolute debt to our nation in a
four-year period of time ever, $4 trillion-plus deficits for each of the four
years that he’s been in office. And his budget continues that process.”
Rand Paul: "I'm
Very Concerned About This President Garnering So Much Power And Arrogance"
Excerpt: You know, our Founding Fathers were very concerned
about having a separation of powers, they didn't want to let the president
become a king. And so, they wanted to say that Congress was the one to
legislate and not the president. So we have a bill we're going to introduce
early next week and in this bill, we will nullify anything the president does
that smacks of legislation.

Good, older piece on
the election
Scroll down to it. ~Bob. Excerpt: What we saw in the
election on Tuesday was a tipping point: we are now at a place where there are
legitimately fewer Americans who desire a free republic with a free people than
there are those who think the government should give them stuff. There are
fewer of us who believe in the value of free exchange and free enterprise.

Letters to the editor of my local paper repeatedly demand "Why does a citizen need an M-16?" Overlooking the fact that few civilians can afford a true M-16, unless they are on the Fast and Furious gift list, I wonder how these writers would have reacted during the Revolution. Would they have decried private ownership of "long rifles," which were state of the art in those days. Indeed, the accuracy of two long rifles, used at the battles of Saratoga and King's Mountain, made material contributions to independence. In both cases, well aimed fire from a great distance killed the British commanders and contributed to these two key British defeats.
