Book Recommendation: Emma's War By Deborah Scroggins
A well written, fascinating and at times sickening account of the 1980s-1990s portion of the genocide in Darfur and long civil war in the Sudan, not only between the largely-Arab Muslim north and the black Christian and Animist south, but among the various factions, including a violent tribal-based struggle within the southern rebels. Though South Sudan became independent a year ago, the multi-sided fighting rages today. Americans only take note when the starvation gets bad enough to warrant TV coverage--if American Idol isn't on--but there is no reason to suspect the suffering and death has lessened. Scroggins, a journalist who reported on Africa first hand, builds her story around Emma McCune, a wild-child British aid worker who married the Sudanese warlord of one of the southern factions and became such a partisan in the internecine tribal feud that it was called "Emma's War" by the locals. Who should read this book? Anyone who thinks that slavery was an American phenomena that ended in 1965. (The Muslims contemptuously referred to all the southern blacks by the local word for "slave.") Anyone who thinks there is real hunger and poverty in America. Anyone who thinks that in the Sudan--or any conflict like this in the Third World, there are any good guys with clean hands--including the US, the UN and the NGO aid organizations. Anyone who thinks that Shari'a law is a benign cultural and religious expression. Anyone in a position to try to make policy for Africa, by the government or by a charitable organization. Anyone who wants a broader understanding of this and similar conflicts. ~Bob

Worth reading: The Jacksons' silence says quite a lot: White liberals are no longer afraid of the Reverend. By John Kass
Excerpt: there was one thing that sent a strong tingle of fear up the leg of white liberals — whether politicians or members of the media — it was the worry that the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. could call them out, bounce the race card against their forehead and make it stick, for all to see, right between the eyes. It's the kind of thing that could ruin a career.

Jackson being treated for 'mood disorder'
Excerpt: Democratic Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is undergoing “intensive” medical treatment for a mood disorder, his office said Wednesday evening. (Deranged Racist disorder is my guess. ~Bob.)

Homicide numbers reveal stark contrast: African-Americans hardest hit by spike in violence, deaths in Chicago
Excerpt: While blacks make up about 33 percent of the city's population, they accounted for nearly 78 percent of the homicide victims through the first six months of 2012. (But, since most of the killers are black, there are no votes, money or power to be gained, so no "Justice for...." marches by the race baiters. And the decent black folks murdered by black thugs are quickly forgotten. ~Bob.)

FBI interviews: No evidence Zimmerman a racist
Must not have listened to the edited MSNBC tape. ~Bob. Excerpt: Federal civil-rights investigators interviewed dozens of George Zimmerman's friends, neighbors and co-workers, and no one said he was a racist, records released Thursday show.

US sends drone submarines to destroy Iranian mines
Excerpt: The objective is to hunt down and destroy mines that Iran may place to enforce its threat of blockading the Strait of Hormuz.

German government backtracks on the Energy Transition
Excerpt: …in almost every speech at this high-level event the importance of fossil fuels for Germany's energy supply was underlined. And not just by industry representatives, but also by the two responsible ministers from Merkel's cabinet, Economics Minister Philipp Rössler and the Minister for the Environment Peter Altmaier. The new Environment Minister even said he was "against discrimination of fossil fuels". (Important. From Greener-than-thou Germany, breaks in the EU green energy plans. The excerpt is from the editor’s teaser emailed with the link to the article. Can we follow them in this? Ron P.)

Calls to Destroy Egypt’s Great Pyramids Begin
With the Islamic Brotherhood barely into power, we are already seeing the extremists coming out of the woodwork to demand all the good stuff that goes with fundamentalist Islam, the morality police, suppression of all non-Muslims (or any Muslims that don't fit their particular bill), etc, and now a real topper, the demand to destroy all "pagan" symbols. Which means the smashing/leveling of the pyramids, the oldest of all major works of human hands. Wow.... I wonder how this will go over, since tourism is pretty important to Egypt. (I don't think they will get to destroy the pyramids, but who knows? And it does demonstrate how they think.) These fanatics are savages, ready to destroy anything and everything that doesn't fit into their narrowest of all world views. --Del

OOPS! Democrats Opposition Research Accidentally Exposed
Excerpt: Media Trackers, a state-based conservative investigative watchdog, today released 12 opposition research notebooks that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has assembled on top Republican candidates they are seeking to beat in November. The books have never been made public and were found thanks to an IT glitch on the DCCC’s web server that allowed Google searches for opposition research terms related to Republican candidates to pull the files up. “This could be the single biggest political intelligence coup of the 2012 battle for Congress,” said Brian Sikma, communications director for Media Trackers.

Spies and Killers
Excerpt: It’s one thing for foreign spies to penetrate our country and our government, but it’s quite different when we seem to be inviting them in and even paying their expenses. Three stories along these lines caught my attention. The first says the FBI is investigating more than a hundred military members and contractors with something or other to do with “radical Islam.”

America's coming civil war -- makers vs. takers
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/07/12/america-coming-civil-war/
Excerpt: Abe Lincoln used those words in 1858 to describe a country that was careening toward civil war. Now we’re a house divided again and another civil war is coming, with the 2012 election as its Gettysburg.

Adult Content: Sodomy "For the Sake of Islam." By Raymond Ibrahim
http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/3158/islam-sodomy
Not only did the original "underwear bomber" Abdullah Hassan al-Asiri hide explosives in his rectum to assassinate Saudi Prince Muhammad bin Nayef—they met in 2009 after the 22-year-old holy warrior "feigned repentance for his jihadi views"—but al-Asiri apparently had fellow jihadis repeatedly sodomize him to "widen" his anus in order to accommodate the explosives— all in accordance with the fatwas [religious edicts] of Islamic clerics. A 2010 Arabic news video that is making the rounds on the Internet gives the details.

Why Abbas Will Never Make Peace With Israel. By Khaled Abu Toameh
Excerpt: What are the chances that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas would ever sign a peace agreement with Israel? The answer: zero. Abbas, who is in his late 70s, has been in power since 2005 even though his term in office formally ended in January 2009.

Internet Joke
How do you tell a Romney supporter from an Obama supporter? Romney supporters sign their checks on the front; Obama supporters sign theirs on the back.

Excerpt: Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz has launched an investigation into the apparent retaliation from inside the DOJ and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives against whistle-blowers who brought information about Operation Fast and Furious to congressional investigators. In a July 5 letter, Horowitz told Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley and House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa that the investigation had begun. Horowitz was responding to a June 29 letter from Issa and Grassley describing how whistle-blowers were allegedly subjected to retaliation on the job. (But if he finds wrong-doing, Holder will retaliate against him, and you can be sure the IG knows it. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: When he asked why, the Pentagon official briefing him said a new DoD policy requires that all reports to Congress be limited to 15 pages. Angered by the new policy, McKeon immediately fired off a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and held a last-minute press briefing to express his frustrations to reporters. “I consider the report to be wholly inadequate and believe it minimizes the uncertainty and the challenges posed by China’s military build-up,” McKeon wrote to Panetta. (Guess Congress is not in the “need to know” group. Oh—green—saving paper! --Barb.)

Excerpt: Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a left-leaning government watchdog group partially funded by billionaire George Soros, is accusing House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa of illegal activity by releasing Operation Fast and Furious wiretap application documents into the congressional record. CREW executive director Melanie Sloan wrote to both Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice and the Office of Congressional Ethics calling for an investigation into how Issa released the document that proves that senior Department of Justice officials both knew about and approved gunwalking in Fast and Furious.

New Executive Order Grants The Department Of Homeland Security Extended Power To Control And Monitor The Internet
Excerpt: The President has the authority to enact these types of orders without the need for any debate, so it is a way for the currently sitting president to implement policy with almost no recourse available to the Public. This new order is now law based on the President’s right to issue these which is granted by the US Congress. Like it or not it looks like the US Government no longer needs to worry about voting on the establishment of surveillance and control measures for the Internet in the US.

Excerpt: This is too much. The Justice Department actually called a witness in the Texas Voter ID trial today in Washington, D.C. The witness complained she couldn’t find the time to get her parents to drive her to get the free photo ID, but she obviously had time to fly to Washington, D.C., from Texas to testify at trial!

Did the Swift Boat ads really sink Kerry?
I can't believe it, it's 8 years later, and in the Washington Post today a supposed conservative writer continues the slam against the Swift Boat Vets. He refers to "scurrilous ads" in a "notorious campaign" and dismisses the book "Unfit For Command" because he doesn't like the author. The Left has successfully created a large myth in which the Swifties were all nasty Far Right types, they were telling lies or at least slanted exaggerations, they were bankrolled big time by assorted fat cats, and it was a rotten, unfair, purely politically motivated smear of Mr. Kerry. And the book about Kerry was pretty much the same thing. The Swifties were good guys who came forward reluctantly and only because Kerry had made his heroic service in the war the biggest lynchpin in his campaign. None of them made a dime, they all took tons of flak for simply telling the truth of what they saw and knew and thought. There was never a lawsuit for libel against the book, and Kerry could sure as hell afford lawyers. He couldn't sue because everything stated in the book as a fact was easily proven, and he would have looked worse in court than he did just leaving it alone. I admire the Swifties and wish I could shake all their hands, and thank them for standing up for the truth when it was needed. --Del

Subtleties of leftist media
The link below is to an opening scene from the new HBO series "The Newsroom." In it Jeff Daniels finally blows up and says we're no longer the best country in the world, in response to a college student asking a set-up question. His outburst is impressive, and he quotes a whole bunch of statistics about how badly off we are. Several of them are false or misleading. (Example- other countries have longer average lifespan, but in the US we lose more people to accidents, violence, and by serving in the military than other nations, and we count the premature babies that die, while other nations do not; this automatically drops the average lifespan. But if you live to be 50 in the USA, your chances of making it to 80 are higher than in any other nation on earth, which actually is a meaningful fact.) He says "we used to have a war on poverty, not on poor people," which assumes we now have a war on poor people. Really? With more people on food stamps than ever before, and free cell phones for the poor, 47% of the population not paying any income tax, and obesity as a health problem among our poorest people? What we call living at a level of poverty would have at least half the world's population thinking they had it made. There's more of the subtle slant in the guy's monologue, all very skillfully put together by some quite smart wordsmiths. This is in a way a great program, because by building in this leftist slant, it actually is portraying a lot of how the real media work. How can we be surprised by the number of ignorant and/or badly misinformed people we have now, when the media (and academia) do such a good job of putting out propaganda. Goebbels would be beaming in admiration. --Del

A Yale professor comments on the sad state of US education
Excerpt: On Dennis Prager’s radio program on Monday, his guest for the third hour was David Gelernter, professor of computer science at Yale and author, most recently, of America-Lite: How Imperial Academia Dismantled Our Culture (and Ushered In the Obamacrats). In the book, and in his interview with Mr. Prager, Mr. Gelernter laments the fallen state of American higher education. He distilled his views powerfully in response to a caller’s question: If the academics ran America, what would happen? (See, not every single professor at Yale is a flaming Leftist..... (but I'd rather not think about how many of them are). This prof's summary is certainly stark enough, and while I'm sure it doesn't describe every college graduate, it does for sure describe a noticeable fraction of them, and however small that fraction is, it's way, way too big. --Del)

Excerpt: President Obama has been stumbling on the economy, and this week he added more proof of his weakness on foreign policy. He told a popular Miami TV station that Venezuela's aggressive President Hugo Chavez "has not had a serious national security impact on us." Chavez certainly doesn't reciprocate Obama's gentle feelings—in 2009, Chávez proclaimed the U.S. to be the "greatest terrorist nation."

Diplomacy with a ‘Kick me’ sign. By Benny Avni
Excerpt: Kofi Annan, that veteran poster boy for kumbaya one-world-ism, asked the UN Security Council yesterday to extend the mandate of his ever-expanding Syria mission. His ideas on solving the Mideast’s most deadly crisis are closer to Russia’s and Iran’s than to ours, but Washington will likely go along anyway. Why? On Syria, as on too many foreign-policy fronts, the Obama administration too often resembles Kofi Annan: It wants all the world’s kids to play nice together in the global sandbox.

Romney Camp: Let's Face It, Obama's a Shameless Liar
Excerpt: The Obama campaign's dishonest attack ads portraying Mitt Romney as a "corporate raider" and a "pioneer" of shipping American jobs overseas have been debunked by multiple independent fact checkers. WaPo called the first such spot "misleading, unfair and untrue," and FactCheck.org found "no evidence" to support Obama's allegations. Undeterred by facts and unconstrained by truth, Chicago has produced a second ad on the very same subject, repeating the very same discredited claims.

'Fast And Furious' Shows GOP's Big Weakness. By Ann Coulter
Excerpt: Most Americans don't care about whether Attorney General Eric Holder is hiding Fast and Furious documents because they don't understand the story.
Until someone can tell us otherwise, there is only one explanation for why President Obama's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives gave thousands of guns to Mexican drug dealers: It put guns in their hands to strengthen liberals' argument for gun control.

The Obama Plan Is Working Just ‘Fine’
Excerpt: When President Barack Obama said everything is going “fine” with the private sector, what he actually meant is that everything is going according to his plan. Obama’s plan has always been to ruin the private sector. Our economy is in free fall. The private sector cannot survive four more years of Obama.

Raytheon Gets $636M For Missile Defense - But Where Are The Lasers?
Excerpt: A recent report by the influential Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments calculated America's various missile defense systems cost anywhere from $3.3 million to $15 million a shot - and it typically takes two shots to be sure of a hit, so double that figure - compared to $1 to $3 million for a souped-up Scud. Even at these rates, the US can probably afford to buy more defensive missiles than impoverished North Korea can buy offensive missiles, but China or even Iran can simply buy more missiles than we can ever hope to counter. That's what CSBA's experts call a "cost imposition" dynamic, and we're the side the costs are being imposed on. (Back in the late 1970s, an odd group near Los Angeles began working on ways to break the Cold War stalemate solution of Mutually Assured Destruction. Some of the members were military officers and others were political types, but most were science fiction writers. Robert Heinlein, Jerry Pournelle, and Larry Niven were prominent regulars. They called themselves something like “The High Frontier Project.” The group literally came up with dozens of possible weapons. Why did they do this? Because as rational persons, they considered self-defense more morally acceptable than self-destruction or slavery. When Reagan was elected in 1980, they began talking to national politicians at the highest levels. Eventually some of their proposals turned into Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, which was promptly dubbed “Star Wars” by the ever hostile media. Although never completed or implemented beyond a few things like the Patriot Anti-missile System, the financial burden SDI forced onto the USSR was one of the factors leading to its collapse in 1989. Even back in the earliest days, there were many voices—mostly Democrats, all liberals of one stripe or another—proclaiming far and wide that it was immoral to attempt to defend ourselves. Some of those voices are still screaming the same rubbish today. They find fellow travelers in those who would rather spend the money on other issues at the expense of our defense budget and/or manned space program. It never seems to occur to anyone that if we’re dead or enslaved, those other programs will be meaningless. Ron P.)

What I Learned Fighting the NLRB: The Obama labor board has been like no other in ignoring the language of the law. By William J. Kilberg
Excerpt: In June 2011, the National Labor Relations Board began a case against Boeing for opening a nonunion plant in South Carolina. Six months later, the International Association of Machinists withdrew its charge that the company was engaging in unfair labor practices, and the NLRB dismissed its complaint. Not coincidentally, Boeing's resolve in fighting the board—and in opening the South Carolina plant in the first place—had produced a collective-bargaining agreement with the machinists' union without a strike for the first time in over a decade.

Former Jordanian MP: "When the Jews sense security...the Muslims will destroy these security and economic enterprises...until not a single Jew can hope to remain on this sacred land"
Excerpt: “We have heard brother Abu Abed [Ismail Haniya] say: "We shall never recognize Israel, and we shall work toward the liberation of Palestine in its entirety, from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea....Therefore, this is the path. The Jihadist operations and the martyrdom operations constitute the path to which Allah guides us.”

Worth Reading: The World is Changing Minute by Minute. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: We are witnessing a seismic shift in global affairs. The shake-up is a perfect storm of political, demographic and technological change that will soon make the world as we have known it for the last 30 years almost unrecognizable.

Excerpt: However, Obama’s $787-billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funneled millions of federal dollars to companies that shipped American jobs overseas. Take, for example, North Carolina-based LED manufacturer Cree Inc., which reaped $39 million through a stimulus-funded tax credit program in January 2010. In November 2009, the company built a manufacturing plant in Huizhou City, China, which is the harbor for more than half of the company’s employees.

Obama Spending $30m On Struggling Schools - In Arab Kingdom
Excerpt: The Obama administration’s solution to public school budget cuts and classroom overcrowding? Infuse millions of extra federal dollars into constructing modern facilities and renovating old ones, while deploying additional computer equipment – and new furniture – in schools nationwide.... Nationwide, that is, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
