Schrödinger’s Virus: Is It Possible that Everybody is Right - and Wrong - About This Thing?

Schrödinger’s Virus: Is It Possible that Everybody is Right - and Wrong - About This Thing?
The most apolitical, reasonable essay to come along about this in a while. No matter who is in charge of the government right now, making the decision when to restart the economy is a no-win deal. Starting up sooner than the most extreme recommendation from anywhere means that they are then 100% responsible for every person who dies of the virus after that, whether they were 84 years old and in terrible health condition or not. Starting it up later than the recommendations of the most forward thinking economists means they are responsible for hundreds of thousands of small businesses going bankrupt, and a host of suicides, domestic abuses, people turning to booze or drugs, etc., and years of hardship for many millions of Americans for years to come. It's a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation. Not a situation I or any of us would want to have to face. The good news is that there are at least 4-6 assorted drugs now being evaluated as possibly helpful against the virus, and there's increasing evidence that some of them are effective. With luck, the studies now ongoing may show us within weeks what really does work and once we have anything that is really effective, even if not 100%, against the virus, that will dial back on the apprehension for everyone. We will get through this. --Del
