Flags, Fortunes and Reflections
I mean, it's just a rectangle of cloth with some colors on it, how important can it be? Some have stepped all over it (Bill Ayers put a picture of himself stomping on it in a dirty alley as the cover of a book he wrote), others burn it, some drag it in the dirt, fly it upside down and spit on it, it's just a material object that can be manipulated any way anyone wishes. But things made into symbols then contain real meaning, at least for some. A short stick and a longer stick are just sticks.... until you put one across the other and make a recognizable cross out of them. Then that has a lot of meaning for people, and for those who are Christians, it brings on the whole message of Christianity, the love of God, the sacrifice for others, redemption, and the future of peace and joy with God. Another bunch of sticks mean nothing until you put them in the pattern of a "crooked cross", the swastika, and then it has enormous meaning for people. What that flag means to so many is the wonderful ideals of America and the struggles and sacrifices of so many to work on bringing the ideals into reality, and protect them. It means the devotion to freedom for all, life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, all paid for by oceans of blood given willingly by those who believe in those ideals and who see them in that flag. Are we who honor the flag the sentimental fools? I say no, a million times no, it is those who have no belief in the flag and what it really stands for who are the sad fools, and I pity them. --Del
