Was there ever serious White supremacy thinking? Absolutely there was, just as Japanese and Chinese believed passionately in the supremacy of their race & culture, as have so many groups in human history. In the conquest of South America it was Spanish supremacy in action, and that continues to this day, the upper class Mexicans descended from Spanish are the "blancos", who will carefully inform you of their background if you get to know them at all. Various forms of racism, including tribalism, have afflicted people forever, and still do in varying degrees all over the world. But the question is not whether the British colonists and French colonists who settled into North America were supremacists then, but what level of that kind of thinking remains among people here today. It'd be wonderful if the answer zero, but that's demanding perfection, which is hard to get from mere human beings. The question is whether what remains is really significant in society or not so much. And Hanson addresses this with his usual facts and clarity. Things are not perfect yet, and never will be, and we still need to work at recognizing the humanity of everyone, and against all forms of bias against subgroups. But let's not accept the false idea that we are a racist nation and that there is some vast collection of fanatic White Supremacists posing a real danger to us all. --Del
