This is maybe the 5th or 6th article I've seen in the last couple of years about the teaching about Islam in public schools. The bottom line is simple, students are required to go into tremendously detailed learning about, and some role-playing in, the tenets and practices of idealized Islam. Yet their learning about no other religion of the many majors in the world (Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism) goes into a fraction of the detail as the various memorizations and exercises in Muslim practice. Nor does any of the learning go into the history of Islam's spread exclusively by conquering armies, nor little details like the official second class status of women in the system. Why would educators feel the need to teach about this one religion in such detail while neglecting all the others? And as the commentator mentions, if students were told to do Christian prayers and act out Christian ceremonies extensively in class, there would be a stampede of ACLU lawyers and others to file lawsuits about it. Studying comparative religion is a part of a good educational program, but then you need a text which allots each religion roughly the same amount of coverage, and discusses their variations objectively. Thus the history would cover how Christianity divided into various sects, just like the Sunni-Shia split in Islam, or the variations in how Judaism and Buddhism are practiced. There might be shorter sections on smaller religions, like the Mormons, Christian Scientists, and some coverage of the Native American religions. This is how objective education works, and not the way we're hearing some schools and texts are giving such emphasis to Islam. The reasons behind such emphasis are hard to understand, but really don't matter. --Del
