Been feeling fine. Had a low-blood-sugar hit Wednesday,
couldn't finish PT Rehab, but was fine at PT on Friday. The lung doesn't like
the cold air--lots of mucus, coughing and a drop in the FEV numbers, but I'm feeling
okay. Bonnie and I baked two apples pies for church today. she rolled out the
crust after I made the dough. They look good--we'll see tomorrow if they are.~Bob
The Old Jarhead Blog
I try to make this blog your one-stop-shop for political
news and conservative opinion. founded
in October, 2008, it gets 5k to 7k page views a week, most from the US ,
but hundreds from many countries worldwide. Feel free to post or forward to
friends who need to be better informed. The news posts are created from several
news feeds, from US and international websites, from twitter when I have spare
time to follow it, and by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I
would have often have missed or skipped. We owe them thanks and appreciation. I
try to include foreign sources and info you won’t get in the MSM, but I often
use links to pieces in the Washington
Post, New York Times, Politico, Reuters and other
left-of-center sources. No one is required to read the blog, or any of the
links. Trust me, no one reads everything posted, but scanning the headlines
will keep you informed, and you can click on stories you want to know more
about. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate
thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or
disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able
to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author.
I try not to post things that are false, too far a stretch, or viciously
inflammatory, regardless of the view point. I also try to avoid items that will
turn off thoughtful centrists and leftists or low-information independents,
including “red meat” pieces with intemperate language or wild speculation,
conspiracy theories with no supporting facts and silly distractions like the
so-called “birther” issue (which I correctly predicted years ago was going
nowhere, and wasted time and energy), but I don’t always succeed. I use maybe
50% of the conservative pieces sent me, probably less than 5% of the liberal
opinion sent, usually to illustrate their views. Readers who don’t like that
are welcome to start their own blogs. Readers who send formatted pieces (title,
link, and a fair-use excerpt of no more than three sentences unless the piece
is very short, than fewer) to tartanmarine(at)gmail.com have a higher chance of
my using them than people who just send a link. A piece without a link has a much lower chance of being used—it
depends on how interesting it is and how much time I have right then to search
for it, and my time is limited right now due to managing the lung transplant I
received on December 23, 2013, which has developed complications. I understand
if you don’t have the time to format or even to find a link—please understand I
don't either. I often include thoughtful comments from contributors. (Tell me
if you want your full name used.) There are no ads on my blog, no fees and I
receive no income from it. Now that I've retired, that might need to change,
but for now, that’s how it is. I do promote my books, with the royalties going
to charity. As always on the Net, as in the legacy media, you must read these
posts critically and with skepticism.
Book Recommendation: American Freedom, American Slavery: The
Ordeal of Colonial Virginia
by Edmund S. Morgan
Published in 1975, this well-written history of the Virginia colony from Jamestown to the
Revolution and the foundations of American slavery is
straightforward and very readable. It explores the historical contradiction
between slavery and the struggle for freedom. The revolution was led military
and politically by Virginia
slaveholders. At that time, 40% of slaves in the colonies were in Virginia . The Virginia colony was
hardly the bucolic paradise some might imagine. Mortality was high, corruption
rampant, life difficult and the large men oppressed the small men. Early labor
was provided by indentured servants, whose lot was little better than slaves.
They were beaten, sometimes fatally, though probably not as bad as slaves.
Their contracts could be sold, and investing in them, as later in slave, was
highly profitable. They were better off in that their contracts could expire if
they lived, and they became free, but the planters sought every excuse to have
the Council extend the contracts for some violation, often trivial. Morgan made
me glad that my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great
grandfather, John Hall, emigrated not to Virginia ,
but to Massachusetts in 1630, where he became
one of the "First Comers" in Yarmouth
on Cape Cod and lived into his 90s. Some
interesting takes from the book that sound current: In the 1600s, the Virginia
Assembly complained that an act of parliament affecting their trade was the
result of avaricious men "whose sickle has been over long in our
harvest." I laughed out loud--nothing changes. Government is still where
"avaricious men" go to put their sickle in your harvest. Other good
quotes: "Men with guns are not as easily exploited as men without
them." p. 240. "(People) wanted an end to fruitless government
expenditures. Much of their tax money, they suspected, was going to line the
pockets of a pack of public officials. ... they wanted a public accounting of
public funds--they wanted specifically to be told what their taxes were paying
for." P.276-277. " But (John) Locke made it clear to Englishmen that
the legislature must be supreme and that the executive must be limited by the
laws that the legislative branch enacted." P.347. "Firearms were
great levelers, and the use of them by ordinary men against established
authority was in itself enough to generate leveling thoughts." This book
is well worth reading.

small but vocal rebellion, Reid (D-Nev.) won reelection to another term atop
the caucus, now as minority leader after eight years in the majority. But his
victory came only after a 31 / 2-hour meeting that became a forum for
political grievances and a rollout of an expanded leadership team meant to

Dems' path after Obamacare: Down, down, down. By Byron York
Excerpt: The question of whether the post-Obamacare
Democrats will remain loyal to the law will be tested. There were 60 Democrats
in the Senate on Christmas Eve 2009, when they voted in lockstep to pass the
Affordable Care Act. Soon there will be 46 Democrats in the Senate, or perhaps
47, if Sen. Mary Landrieu manages to eke out a win in Louisiana . In plain numbers, the
post-Obamacare trajectory has not been good for Senate Democrats. The 46 or 47
Democrats in the next Senate are a bit different from the group that passed
Obamacare. Sixteen of them took office after the Affordable Care Act was signed

Obamacare’s health care rationing: IPAB represents an extreme consolidation of
power. By Christina Sandefur
Excerpt: A new petition will be filed Wednesday, asking
the court to review the most sweeping government power grab
in the law. The case, Coons v. Lew, involves the unaccountable health care
rationing agency that the act establishes. The Independent Payment Advisory Board, or IPAB, is charged with controlling Medicare costs.
To achieve that goal, the law gives IPAB broad authority to implement price controls, levy
taxes and take whatever action its members consider “related to the Medicare program.”
The law makes this group of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats immune from

Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the Islamic State and
also that he wants to “right-size and update” the 2001 AUMF “to suit the
current fight, rather than previous fights.” It appears that Congress, too, is
finally getting serious about putting U.S. counterterrorism operations on
a contemporary and more rigorous statutory footing.
Worth Reading : The U.S. strategy
against the Islamic State must be retooled. Here’s how. By Max Boot, Washington Post
Excerpt: President Obama’s strategy in Syria and Iraq is not working. The president
is hoping that limited airstrikes, combined with U.S. support for local proxies,
will “degrade
and ultimately destroy” the Islamic State. But while U.S. actions may have blunted the Islamic
State’s expansion, they have not shaken the terrorist group’s control of an
area the size of Britain .
If the president is serious about dealing with the Islamic State, he will need
to increase America ’s
commitment well beyond his recent decision to deploy1,500
more advisers. (Obama doesn't want to criticize a Muslim entity, and so he
says that ISIS "is not really
Islamic." He justifies that statement with the fact that ISIS
has committed atrocities, such as beheadings, which, Obama says, no "truly
Islamic" entity would do. Once again, Obama has uttered sheer idiocy,
although very articulately. Obama has enticed Saudi
Arabia into a coalition to combat ISIS .
Obama must consider Saudi
Arabia to be a "truly Islamic"
entity. But, Saudi Arabia ,
like ISIS , practices Islam, follows the Quran,
and adheres to the Sharia. Saudi
Arabia has been beheading those who it
considers guilty of crimes against Islam, since its inception as a country. In
addition to beheading, Saudi
Arabia practices amputation, mutilation,
lashing and stoning as punishment for crimes. Saudi Arabia forbids public
practice of any religion other than Islam. Yet, Obama deems ISIS as "not
truly Islamic", and Saudi
Arabia , as "truly Islamic".
Obama's criteria must not be based upon what is done, but rather, on who does
it, and who they do it to. All Muslims follow the Quran, which establishes
Islamic doctrine. And, Islamic doctrine includes "death to infidels".
Obama, and other Western leaders, never mention the doctrine. It would not be
"politically correct" to mention it. But, the Muslim World takes it
very seriously. The two major branches of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shia, each
consider the other to be "infidels", and they have been killing each
other for centuries, for that reason. They still are, and, of course, they are
killing non-Muslim "infidels", as well. But, Obama, President of a
nation of "infidels", ignores the Islamic death sentence for the
American people, and instead, fantasizes that "Islam is the religion of
love", and, Islamic terrorism is the work of a tiny minority".
However, any fool can see that the Sunnis and the Shia are hardly "a tiny
minority", and any fool can see that "death to the infidels" is
hardly a message of love. --Syd Chaden in the comments section.
The Islamic State and
Jabhat al-Nusra: A Looming Grand Jihadi Alliance ?
By Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
Excerpt: The international coalition- led by the U.S.-
against the Islamic State [IS], with additional American airstrikes targeting
the 'Khorasan' al-Qa'ida group in Syria (in reality just al-Qa'ida veterans
from the Afghanistan-Pakistan embedded with Syria's al-Qa'ida affiliate Jabhat
al-Nusra [JN])- has prompted media speculation of a wider truce, alliance or
even merger between IS and JN. For example, on 28 September, Martin Chulov of The Guardian cited a "senior
source" claiming "war planning meetings" held between JN and IS
leaders.
Why the US Is Losing Yemen
Excerpt: “The Yemeni government is under enormous pressure
from multiple fronts,” he said. “And we’re in danger of losing a key partner in
our counter-terrorism allies.” It was not the statement itself that was
surprising for those who have been paying attention to events in Yemen . Rather,
it was a rare admission from a U.S. official
that things weren’t going well in the country, which the Obama administration
has cast as a key success story in the battle against al-Qaeda.

Excerpt: The US
targeted al Qaeda's network in Syria
in one of the 20 airstrikes that took place between Nov. 12 and Nov. 14. While
the US
military has said the strike was carried out against al Qaeda's so-called
Khorasan Group, the targets indicate that local infrastructure used by the Al
Nusrah Front were hit. US Central Command, or CENTCOM, noted that it
"struck terrorists associated with a network of veteran al Qaeda
operatives, sometimes called the 'Khorasan Group,' who are plotting external
attacks against the United States and our allies" in one of the attacks.
Teenage Saudi Girl
Won't Have to Marry 90-Year-Old. By Phyllis Chesler
Excerpt: A Saudi teenager, told she would marry a handsome
young man whom she had been allowed to meet, was shocked when she discovered
that her father had tricked her and that her groom was a man in his nineties.
She is 17-years old. Amazingly, the girl bolted and called the police. Headlines, and a
social media campaign, condemned her father, accusing him of "selling his daughter to an old man." A court
just ruled the marriage "null and void."
Al-Shabaab kidnaps
residents, beheads 2 women in Kudha. By Fuad Ahmed in Mogadishu
Excerpt: Al-Shabaab beheaded two women and kidnapped more
than 20 civilians it accused of spying and opposing its views after briefly
re-taking control of Kudha island on November 8th.
Al-Shabaab militants went door-to-door in Kudha, rounding up
young women and men they accused of spying for the Interim Jubba
Administration. Above, residents who fled their homes in Bulomarer are able to
return home August 31st after African Union Mission in Somalia troops liberated the town
from al-Shabaab. "I can guarantee that the two women beheaded by
al-Shabaab and the more than 20 civilians they [kidnapped] had nothing to do
with the accusations levelled against them of spying for the Interim Jubba
Administration (IJA)," said Colonel Urdan Kilas Gurase of the IJA security
forces. "The women were under the age of 20, and what these men are doing
is barbaric," he told Sabahi. (Funny how many Muslims think that beheading
is Islamic, unlike Imam John Kerry. ~~Bob)

I am really sick to death of "we can't impeach because... ... ... ... ... ... ". The cities will burn, we'll get biden, or worse, it will help the dims.
ReplyDeleteIt is fucking over when we "can't" deal with the lawless for whatever reason. We have laws by the shitload anymore but justice is just dead and gone, because the bullies would only be offended if not further appeased...
