Veteran long
celebrated by Marines to be awarded Medal of Honor
Excerpt: Cpl. William Kyle Carpenter doesn’t remember much
about the day he and a fellow Marine were caught in the blast of a hand grenade
in southern Afghanistan
while manning a rooftop security post. There was almost no time to react before
the explosion tore into him in a searing, angry ball of white light. ...
Remarkably, Carpenter did survive, despite horrific wounds. Just as remarkable
is how he sustained them — by throwing himself on the grenade in an attempt to
save his friend and fellow Marine, Lance Cpl. Nick Eufrazio, from harm.

This Propels Asian-American Kids to Head of Class: Reading, math tests
showed little difference in innate abilities compared to whites, other
minorities. By Amy Norton
Excerpt: Asian-American students have a reputation as high
achievers, and a new study suggests their success comes mainly from hard work
rather than innate ability. It's well known that compared with white students,
Asian-American kids tend to get higher grades, do better on standardized tests
and are more likely to go to college -- including elite universities. Asians
were discriminated against in the American west as badly as or worse than other
ethnic groups. The violence directed at them was at least as bad as anything
the KKK did. The Chinese in particularly arrived here destitute, while Japanese
Americans often lost everything when the Roosevelt
administration sent them to camps during WWII. Yet today they have incomes
above the national average, and their kids are discriminated against on the
basis of race in college admissions, in the holy name of "diversity,"
so they won't overload the universities. If you could transfer the work ethic
and commitment to education of Asian and Jewish American families to all ethnic
groups, poverty would be a very small problem in a generation. Pay attention. Race
doesn't matter--culture does. You might want to write that down. ~Bob)

Poverty and Snow Storms. By Thomas Sowell

lady who died in the snow storm, unable to see the way.

Holder confronts
racial issues in address as White House puts discrimination at the fore
Excerpt: Saturday, Holder warned against the spectacle of
such episodes. “These outbursts of bigotry, while deplorable, are not the true
markers of the struggle that still must be waged, or the work that still needs
to be done,” Holder said. “The greatest threats,” he continued, “are more
subtle. They cut deeper. And their terrible impact endures long after the
headlines have faded and obvious, ignorant expressions of hatred have been
marginalized.” (And what is a "subtle threat" of racial

The new app that tracks your carbon footprint — and lords

Excerpt: Monroe is
the CEO of Oroeco, a recently
launched web app that tracks a user’s personal impact on climate change.
The app not only helps you quantify your own footprint — based on your
spending habits, made possible through linking up with Mint.com — but by logging
in with Facebook it’ll allow you to compare your carbon sins with those of your
virtual community. ... Something that comes as a shock to a lot of our
users: The average person who says they care about climate change actually has
a substantially worse than average footprint. Generally that’s because they
tend to have a bit more money, and they tend to be people who like to think of
themselves as multicultural and like to get out and see the world.

No Keystone XL Means
More Railroad Spills
Excerpt: Transporting oil via the Keystone XL pipeline is
the safest, most environmentally-friendly way to transport crude oil, contends
Terry Anderson, president of the Property and Environment Research
Center . Crude oil is
going to continue moving, regardless of whether the president approves Keystone
XL. If the pipeline is not approved, oil will have to move via railroad. In
deciding to approve Keystone XL, Anderson
says, the question should be which method of transport is safer. The answer?
Pipelines. A February report from the State Department concluded that pipelines
greater than 12 inches in diameter spilled 910,000 gallons of crude oil and
petroleum in 2013. Tank cars, however, spilled 1.15 million gallons. Those
figures may seem relatively comparable. However, pipelines carry close to 25
times more crude oil and petroleum than do railroad cars. (Blocking cheaper oil

Excerpt: You've seen them dozens of times somewhere around
your neighborhood. A ten year old kid plucks a dozen lemons from mom's tree in
the back yard. They cut up the lemons, fill up a pitcher with water, throw in some
sugar, and, "voila", they're in business...lemonade: 10 cents a
glass. Let the government open that same lemonade stand. They'll hire a million
dollar designer architect, pay him a million bucks to design a stone and glass
edifice, erect the building for another five or ten million (winning bidder has
to be a lobbyist over on K Street). Then they'll hire an interior designer
who'll select the finest draperies, install new furniture, install a wall of
filing cabinets, then put out a federal call for two hundred $150,000 dollars
per year bureaucrats. Then, they'll buy each federal slug a personal I-Pad and
a desktop I-Mac, and an I-Phone which the slugs will use to draw up a sole
source contract with a "green farmer" who can provide organic lemons.
Think that doesn't happen? Well, you weren't reading the weekend headlines,
then. Remember all those old vets who died waiting months for an appointment at
a VA hospital? Remember our VA Secretary crying "budget restraints"
as the cause? Well, this weekend we learned that the VA spent $697,000,000
dollars on new drapes, new furniture and new office equipment in the last three
years...even as their "customers" were dying before their eyes as
they "cooked the books" and said no veteran was waiting for
treatment. Or perhaps the IRS is more to your liking. We also learned this week
that, when the IRS is not harassing conservative groups, they are busy playing
video games. (While I agree that big government is by nature wasteful and
inefficient, I have to defend the VA Hospital here in Madison , WI .
Throughout my lung transplant process, I haven't interacted with one
professional, from the surgeon to the CNAs, who I would not want to care for me
in the future. The appointments have been fine. There have been small glitches,
but not as bad as with most big organizations--I've had worse with banks and
cable companies. There is some "deferred maintenance on the building, and

Excerpt: The whole scenario of the Benghazi incident seems cut and dry to most
Americans, our Consulate was attacked by terrorists, resulting in the deaths of
6 Americans. So why the lies and cover up from the Obama Administration? The
answer is because there is a lot more to Benghazi
than meets the eye. First of all, this was a blatant attack on Americans, not a
protest that got out of hand in connection with the YouTube video, Innocence of
Muslims, as we were told by the Administration shortly after the incident.
Judicial Watch's Investigation Leads Directly

Excerpt: These documents reveal that, contrary to claims

on the IRS by Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) to shut down conservative-leaning
tax-exempt organizations. And they contain IRS emails that directly contradict
Lerner’s misleading explanations, uncovered for the first time by JW, to
investigators about the targeting of Tea Party organizations. (As Bob would say, "Show me your shocked face..."

Sea Level Rises Are
An Insignificant Problem To Which We Can Easily Adapt, Says New Report
Excerpt: Attempts to stem sea level rises by reducing CO2
levels in order to "combat" global warming are a complete waste of
time says a
new report by two of the world's leading oceanographic scientists. Over
the last 150 years, average global sea levels have risen by around 1.8 mm per
annum - a continuation of the melting of the ice sheets which began 17,000
years ago. Satellite measurements (which began in 1992) put the rate higher -
at 3mm per year. But there is no evidence whatsoever to support the doomsday
claims made by Al Gore in 2006 that sea levels will rise by 20 feet by the end
of the century, nor even the more modest prediction by James Hansen that they
will rise by 5 metres.

professor admonished the graduates for being of small mind and intolerant of
opposing points of view. This comes on the heels of a plethora of similar
protests, all driven by liberals mind you, across this nation. I found it a bit
ironic that a Yale Civics and Sociology professor, one who surely helped to
indoctrinate our nation's youth in the liberal philosophy is himself shocked at
how effective he and his fellow academics have succeeded in brainwashing....to
the extent that their liberal views have already hardened..and to the extent
that tolerance of opposing points of view is no longer allowed.

Excerpt: he worst thing about Macklemore's antisemitic performance in Seattle last Friday is not
that he dressed up as a hook-nosed, black-bearded Jewish caricature (in a

Excerpt: Yale law professor Stephen Carter has written an
imaginary address to America 's
Class of 2014, which is currently busy disinviting truckloads of distinguished
speakers from their graduation ceremonies. In the course of his remarks,
Professor Carter observes:
The literary critic George Steiner, in a wonderful little
book titled "Nostalgia for the Absolute," long ago predicted this
moment. We have an attraction, he
contended, to higher truths that can sweep away complexity and nuance. We like
systems that can explain everything. Intellectuals in the West are nostalgic
for the tight grip religion once held on the Western imagination. They are attracted
to modes of thought that are as comprehensive and authoritarian as the medieval
church. Oddly enough, Professor Carter doesn't so much as mention
"climate change", but "Nostalgia for the Absolute" fits,
doesn't it? "Higher truths that can sweep away complexity and
nuance"? If you sweep them away as thoroughly as climate absolutist
Michael E Mann, you find yourself sitting across the table from an interviewer who believes that, if it's 10 Celsius today and
15 Celsius tomorrow, that means it's 50 per cent warmer. And you don't
mind the company you're keeping, because when it comes to your "higher
truth" this guy believes, he believes absolutely - which is
all that matters. (For anyone who has some interest in the Climate Change
topic, below is an article about one aspect of it, which deals with how the
slightest deviation from the tight script of the real fanatics will get anyone,
no matter their record or actual position, cast into the outer darkness
instantly, and made the object of deep scorn. Michael Mann is a sad joke as a
scientist, his personal attitudes and actions are typical of a spoiled teenager
screaming obscenities at the people he doesn't like, and he doesn't like anyone
who challenges him in the least way. Given how easy it is to challenge
some of his work, this has led to him attacking a bunch of people, and entering
into lawsuits against some of them, notably Mark Steyn and National Review. I
can't wait for the trial, when Prof. Mann is going to get gutted in open court,
which he deserves so richly. This kind of fanaticism and viciousness is NOT
science, it's flawed people pretending to be scientists as cover for their
supposed authority in attacking others. And it makes any real scientist sad, as
it does me. --Del )

A Brief History of Obama’s ‘Angry’ Moments. By Reid J. Epstein

Department of Veterans Affairs facilities are the latest chapter in President Barack Obama being
mad about something. Mr. Obama hasn’t said so himself yet, but White House
Chief of Staff Denis McDonough took to CNN Thursday to say that
“nobody’s more mad than the president.” Press Secretary Jay Carney told
reporters the president is “concerned and angry” about the situation. That, as
my colleagues Colleen

verbatim, a similar White House tactic from last fall’s health-care website
debacle. (Nobody's madder than Obama about his administration's many failures?

Debunking Myths About Inequality
Excerpt: A common political narrative today is that
America's rich continue to get richer while the poor become poorer, leading
lawmakers to call for higher taxes and increases in the minimum wage. But there
are a number of fictions surrounding the inequality debate. ...
Myth 1: Inequality has never been worse. The distribution of
wealth in the U.S.
has been relatively stable over the last several decades. In 1965, the top one
percent of Americans held 34.4 percent of the country's wealth; in 2010, that
figure was at 35.4 percent. ... Myth 2: The rich inherit their money. Actually,
80 percent of American millionaires are the first in their families to become
millionaires. ... Myth 3: The rich stay rich, while the poor remain poor.

wait lists.” ... "The Obama administration received clear notice more
than five years ago that VA medical facilities were reporting inaccurate
waiting times and experiencing scheduling failures that threatened to deny
veterans timely health care — problems that have turned into a growing scandal.

This is sickening. I can only speak for myself, but the care
I have received at the Madison ,
WI VA Hospital as I went through
the lung transplant process has been superb. (Yes, I now have issues that are
life threatening. no person's fault--the luck of the draw--and they are still

surgeons and other docs, the transplant NP and transplant coordinator, the PT guys,

which isn't all nonsense and bluster. In this short video O'Reilly comes down
very direct and hard on the major problem of the urban Black communities, and
spares none of the leaders in those communities for not taking stands that
would really be far more meaningful that the standard lectures on victimology. What

The Health Insurance

Excerpt: Health insurance gives Americans the illusion that
they are spending someone else's money when they receive medical treatment,
explains Jeffrey Singer, general surgeon and adjunct scholar at the Cato
Institute. According to a new report from Harvard and Dartmouth

faster than the U.S.
