Limited Posts
I will be out of pocket for the next few days on healthcare appointments and family stuff, so posts may be infrequent. Happy St. Pat’s Day, when we celebrate Patrick driving the liberals out of Ireland . Have I got that right? Maybe it was lawyers he drove out. Whatever. ~Bob.
Information on my six books
Excerpt: Derrick Bell was for years a civil rights lawyer, but not an academic legal scholar of the sort who gets appointed as a full professor at one of the leading law schools. Yet he became a visiting professor at the Stanford law school and was a full professor at the Harvard law school. It was transparently obvious in both cases that his appointment was because he was black, not because he had the qualifications that got other people appointed to these faculties.
Excerpt: Just 1 percent of California taxpayers are already providing 45 percent of the state's income tax revenue. And such income taxes now fund half the budget.
But unfortunately, in recent years the number of upper-income earners in California has radically shrunk -- by a third between 2007 and 2009 alone. Apparently, wealthy Californians are either fleeing to nearby no-income-tax states or have become less well-off after years of economic downturn, higher taxes, and overregulation of business
Worth Reading : Interviewing Thomas Sowell On Intellectuals and Society By John Hawkins
Excerpt: Thomas Sowell has come out with a revised edition of Intellectuals and Society and I was pleased to have an opportunity to interview him about the book. Here’s a slightly edited transcript of our conversation on Tuesday.
In less than 50 years they ruined my home state. They over-taxed it, over-regulated it and bankrupted it. They strangled its vibrant economy, destroyed its education system and let its infrastructure crumble. Who are these people who've turned the Golden State into Greece ?
I Will Gladly Pay You 100 Years From Now, For a Hamburger Today by Mike Shedlock
http://finance.townhall.com/columnists/mikeshedlock/2012/03/15/i_will_gladly_pay_you_100_years_from_now_for_a_hamburger_today
Excerpt: UK Chancellor George Osborne proposes 100-year bonds. Essentially his message is "I Will Gladly Pay You 100 Years From Now, For a Hamburger Today". Whether it's Tuesday of next week or Tuesday a hundred years from now, the safe bet is the debt will never be repaid. (Wish I could spend money today on the promise that my great grandkids would pay it back in 100 years. ~Bob.)
The Left’s Schadenfreude Fraud by Janet M. LaRue
Excerpt: Schadenfreude, according to Webster, is “enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others.” It encapsulates the essence of women using government to force others to pay for their contraception. The fraud is in hustling the con as a women’s health issue. It makes sense only to abortion zealots who think pregnancy is a disease or a parasite.

Chicago Way
agenda in speed camera deal by John Kass
Like Scots to mist, you become inured to this stuff when you live in Cook County . It hardly stirs outrage, which works to the machine’s benefit. Everywhere, there is a “corruption tax,” but hardly higher than here, where Obama’s buddies have us paying “our fair share” until we bleed out. ~Bob. Excerpt: It was all laid out perfectly in a Chicago Tribune investigative report on Mayor Rahm Emanuel's friend and political strategist Greg Goldner, the consultant to a red-light camera firm that is in line for a big payday. The company, Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., already provides cameras to City Hall, and it stands to make millions more from Emanuel's plan to add speed cameras, providing more traffic tickets to drivers, and providing more revenue for City Hall.
Worth Reading : Not all of Blagojevich's missteps were criminal, some were just stupid: Ex-governor veered from the
Chicago Way
, now he's paying the price by John Kass
Excerpt: Yet corruption isn't enough to explain his fall. It's too easy. It won't help us understand this crooked state we live in. And it won't explain why he'll be a human trivia question in a few months, and why his former rival and fellow Chicago Democratic machine creature, Obama, is moving toward a second term in the White House. Chicago is a thoroughly corrupt city.
Okay, enough! Karzai demands U.S. troops leave village outposts; Taliban suspends peace talks with U.S.
Excerpt: President Hamid Karzai demanded Thursday that the United States pull back from combat outposts and confine its troops to military bases in Afghanistan, an apparent response to Sunday’s shooting rampage by a U.S. staff sergeant. Meanwhile, the Taliban said it was suspending preliminary peace talks with the United States because of Washington ’s “alternating and ever-changing position,” and accused U.S. officials of reneging on promises to take meaningful steps toward a prisoner swap. (Okay. I’m sorry for the little girls who will be raped by old men in Shari’a-approved arranged “marriages.” I’m sorry for the women who will be treated as chattel, or maybe the word is cattle. I’m sorry for the teen girls who will have acid thrown in their faces for going to school, or who will be stoned to death for adultery when they are raped, I’m sorry for the little girls who will have their genitals mutilated to preserve their Islamic modesty. I’m sorry American feminists care more about who pays for college students’ birth control than this real “war on women.” But I’m sorry for a lot of things we can’t do anything about, and I now believe we have not the will to do what is needed. Time to bring the troops home, and turn Karzai over to the Taliban with a note promising massive retaliation if they train one terrorist to come against peaceful folks outside their country. And time to stop all military or humanitarian aid to Pakistan . If they have the money to build A-bombs, they don’t need a penny in aid. They want help, they can sell us the bombs. ~Bob.)
Wake Up, Panetta: UN , U.S. Have Opposing Interests By Ion Mihai Pacepa
Excerpt: On March 7, 2012, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stated in the U.S. Congress that the United Nations and NATO have supreme authority over the actions of the United States military. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) reacted to Secretary Panetta’s statement, saying: I’m really baffled by the idea that somehow an international assembly provides a legal basis for the United States military to be deployed in combat.… The only legal authority that’s required to deploy the United State 's military is of the Congress and the president, and the law, and the Constitution.
Iranian military commander: We must destroy America By Reza Kahlili
“The head of Iran ’s Basij paramilitary force says his country has no choice but to destroy America in order to build an ideal society. In a video broadcast to Basij members on Feb. 26, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi said the Islamic regime’s “independence and unhindered advance toward perfection is subject to removing the despotic powers and the Zionists,” referring to America and Israel .”
Bumper Sticker
Recall Santa: I didn’t get what I want.
Excerpt: Executives at The New York Times have rejected a full-page anti-Islam advertisement that mimicked a controversial anti-Catholic advertisement they published on March 9. (Well, Catholics complain. Muslims complain with bombs. ~Bob.)
DNCchief Wasserman Schultz backs Holder ’100 percent’
Excerpt: Democratic National Committee chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida supports Attorney General Eric Holder ’100 percent,’ her spokesman said Wednesday, despite a chorus of Republicans calling for Holder’s resignation in the wake of Operation Fast and Furious. (Well, most of the dead were Mexicans--don't vote in her district. ~Bob.)
How Obamacare Increases Unemployment by Diana Furchtgott-Roth
Excerpt: The mandated $2,000 tax per worker in the new health care law, effective 2014 and levied on employers who do not provide the right kind of health insurance, is discouraging hiring. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 will raise the cost of employment when fully implemented in 2014. (Increasing dependency on government: the Obama Agenda.)
Planned Parenthood was founded to keep more of the “unfit” from being born. How’d they miss this guy? ~Bob. Excerpt: The CEO and President of the Planned Parenthood Association of Lubbock has been arrested for exposing himself in public. Lubbock police say Tony Thornton, 56, was arrested just before 3:30 Monday afternoon at the baseball fields inside of Mackenzie Park.
Excerpt: Progress was happening there. In early 2011, I drove there from Kandahar city without the military. The mood of the locals was tense. The journey was unsafe, but the fact that we entered what had previously been a Taliban-owned district, and returned safely, was demonstrative. Yet in one furious night of murder, a single U.S. soldier (apparently) has wiped Panjwai progress off the map. (The murders in Panjway are an important moment in this war. No telling how this will unfold. Never mind that the Taliban have murdered more than 16 in the last two days, including women and children. (13 in Urozgan alone.) The sad fact is that this is very unlikely to turn out well, and that Afghanistan is moving toward civil war. –Michael Yon.)
Get Dense: It’s time to stop wasting land and resources in the name of environmentalism. By Robert Bryce
Excerpt: There is an important exception to the historical trend of ever-denser agriculture, however: the production of organic food, which doesn’t use many fertilizers and pesticides. Various recent studies have found that land devoted to organic farming produces 50 percent less wheat, 55 percent less asparagus and lettuce, and 23 percent less corn than conventionally farmed land of the same acreage does. (Buy Organic—Starve the Third World ! ~Bob.)
Israeli strike on Iran could mean $6-per-gallon gas
http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-wire/216179-iran-strike-could-mean-6-per-gallon-gas
http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-wire/216179-iran-strike-could-mean-6-per-gallon-gas
Excerpt: An Israeli military strike against Iranian nuclear enrichment sites would spike gas prices to between $5 and $6 per gallon, according to market analysts. This would be well beyond the record highs hit in 2008, when nationwide average retail prices hit $4.11-per-gallon, analysts say. (What would a terrorist nuke strike with an Iranian bomb on NYC mean for the price of gas and everything else? ~Bob.)
Quest for justice after Black postman is killed in East L.A.
Excerpt: The mailman and his severed legs were rushed to LAC/USC Medical Center, where he died two hours later. … Upon arrival at the scene, LAPD officers learned that Soto, the man who hit Dunn, was driving with a suspended license. (California Code for ILLEGAL ALIEN. –DH.) They also found no evidence that Soto was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or had been speeding and they let him go.
56% Oppose Justice Department’s Blocking of Texas Voter ID Law
Excerpt: The Obama administration has blocked Texas’ new law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, saying it would suppress Hispanic voter turnout, and the United Nations is now investigating the fairness of such laws in Texas and other states. But voters in this country still overwhelmingly support voter ID laws and don’t think they discriminate.
Under Oath, Alamoudi Ties MAS To Brotherhood
Excerpt: The Muslim American Society (MAS) was created as a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in America , and continues to serve that function today, a man who once was one of the most influential Muslim political leaders testified in a Virginia courtroom Wednesday. "Everyone knows that MAS is the Muslim Brotherhood," Abdurrahman Alamoudi told federal investigators in a January interview from a federal correctional facility.
Soldiers Murder Afghans, Generals Murder Soldiers
Excerpt: But generals don’t have a clue about Afghan “culture.” They interact with well-educated, privileged, English-speaking Afghans who know exactly which American buttons to press to keep the tens of billions of dollars in annual aid flowing. The troops, on the other hand, daily encounter villagers who will not warn them about Taliban-planted booby traps or roadside bombs, who obviously want them to leave, who relish the abject squalor in which they live and who appear to value the lives of their animals above those of their women. When our Soldiers and Marines hear, yet again, that they need to “respect Afghan culture,” they must want to puke up their rations.
Women Figure Anew in Senate’s Latest Battle
Excerpt: The fight over the law, which would expand financing for and broaden the reach of domestic violence programs, will be joined Thursday when Senate Democratic women plan to march to the Senate floor to demand quick action on its extension. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada , the majority leader, has suggested he will push for a vote by the end of March. Democrats, confident they have the political upper hand with women, insist that Republican opposition falls into a larger picture of insensitivity toward women that has progressed from abortion fights to contraception to preventive health care coverage — and now to domestic violence. (If one spouse beats the other up, should the FBI respond, or is it the job of the local cops to handle it? This isn’t—or shouldn’t be—a federal issue to begin with. It should be dealt with by the governments that regulate it, at state level in other words. Why did it become a “battle?” Even if passed by the Senate, the House may not even take the measure up (“More important things to do, you know, like fixing the economy or lowering the price of gasoline.”). The Democrats and their pet media are doing their best to create a controversy that—they hope—makes Republicans look less attractive. Our guys should smile sweetly, say little, quietly vote against, and NEVER take it up in the House. End of problem. Ron P.)
A Budget to Save the American Dream
Excerpt: America 's fiscal condition is dauntingly dismal. The national debt is well on its way to $17 trillion, 13 million Americans are out of work, and the country is stuck in the slowest recovery in the post-war era. Despite Washington bleeding taxpayers dry with reckless overspending, the U.S. Senate has not passed a budget since nearly a year before Apple released the original iPad, leaving the country in a lurch, desperate for leadership in Congress that will bring bold changes and an end to the unconscionable pattern of spending and borrowing.
FEC records: Obama campaign paid $345,000 for Guggenheim film biopic
Excerpt: Records filed by Obama for America with the Federal Election Commission indicate that the president’s re-election campaign shelled out at least $345,353 to commission “The Road We’ve Traveled,” a 17-minute campaign documentary by Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim, set for release Thursday.
Border Patrol agent injured after car explodes http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/15/border-patrol-agent-injured-car-explosion/
Excerpt: One person was killed and a Border Patrol agent was injured overnight Thursday after a car exploded just east of Pine Valley .
Marines to cut four battalions, 12 air squadrons
Excerpt: Marine Corps said on Wednesday it would cut four infantry battalions and 12 flying squadrons over the next five years as it shrinks by 20,000 personnel to meet budget constraints and peacetime needs after more than a decade of war. The biggest cuts would fall on Marine Corps bases in North Carolina , with Camp Lejeune and the adjacent New River air base losing 5,800 personnel and Cherry Point air base losing another 2,100. Three California Marine bases - Camp Pendleton , 29 Palms and Miramar - would lose a total of 6,000 personnel. (Add 20,000 to the unemployment list, but over time. And think of the insurance savings! National security? What’s that? ~Barb.)
Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs By Greg Smith
Excerpt: TODAY is my last day at Goldman Sachs. After almost 12 years at the firm — first as a summer intern while at Stanford, then in New York for 10 years, and now in London — I believe I have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture, its people and its identity. And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it. (Why should we care? Well, besides the fact that Goldman Sachs is one of the biggest investment firms in the world, it's also a huge source of funds for the Democratic party. Jeff Dobbs spotlighted this relationship back in 2008: http://thevimh.blogspot.com/2008/10/goldman-sachs-loves-obama.html From NRO Morning Jolt with Jim Geraghty. TV this morning reported over a $2B decline in GS value due to this. ~Bob.)
Older, but worth reading: President Goldman Sachs or “Who owns Obama?”
Excerpt: So, the heroic martyrs of Obama’s Occupy movement would save us from the evil banker oligarchs. They decry the economic influence these businessmen have. They rant about the political power wielded by Wall Street.
Greg Smith Isn't A Whistleblower, He's Just A Goldman Sachs Executive Having A Midlife Crisis
Excerpt: He remained happily employed at Goldman after it took a massive taxpayer bailout. He stuck around to enjoy the firm’s $45 billion of 2009 revenues after Goldman got $10 billion from the Treasury Department’s Troubled Asset Relief Program and sold $29 billion of low-cost bonds backed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program. Goldman was also allowed to become a bank holding company and borrow cash from the Federal Reserve’s discount window for just about nothing while riding the yield curve the Fed had set up. Smith stayed for all that.
All the Senator’s Women
This is three years old, but timely, given the hypocrisy of the “feminist” left over Rush Limbaugh using the “S” word versus Bill Maher using the “T” word and the “C” word. ~Bob. Excerpt: If you're not sympathetic to Kennedy's politics, you'll note that he had a staggeringly privileged life, and got away with something he shouldn't have.
Consumed By Wars Without End by Robert H. Scales, MajGen , USA (Ret.)
Excerpt: I guess I knew it would eventually come down to this: Blame the Army’s institutions in some way for the horrific and senseless slaughter of 16 innocent Afghan civilians in Kandahar , allegedly by a U.S. infantry non-commissioned officer (NCO). In their search for a villain, the media seems to be focusing now on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, where the accused soldier was stationed before his fourth deployment to a combat zone. (General Scales is right on target. It is obvious to me the established counterinsurgency plan is a failure, and after our departure, it is likely most if not all gains will be lost to the Taliban (Karzai just stated he wants forces returned to major bases from outposts and the Taliban has withdrawn from negotiations). After withdraw, I believe the alternative course of action is to operate out of lily pad bases in the geographic area using drones, fixed wing aircraft and special forces to preclude extremist from ever using Afghanistan again to train Jihadist. This should have been the approach to begin with and was previously articulated by General Scales. Same approach applies to other countries such as the Horn of Africa. After fighting wars for over 10 years, this Administration is going to gut our military by taking almost one trillion dollars out of the DoD budget during the next 10 years. Right now this is a given unless we get rid of Obama and Congressional extremist in the November General Election! --GBH.)
Excerpt: Meanwhile, Hispanic unemployment continued rising for another 13 months, topping out at 13.1% in November 2010. After falling to a still-high 10.5% in January 2012, it ticked up to 10.7% in February. How about the situation for African-Americans? Their unemployment rate went way up, and despite occasional hints of improvement stayed up. The African-American jobless rate finally maxed out at 16.7% just seven months ago, a full two years and two months after the recession’s end. (Yeah, but it’s not Obama. It’s Bush’s fault. Or Sarah Palin, who Obama is now running against. Or Global Warming. Or something, never Obama. ~Bob.)
Red Tape Rising: Obama-Era Regulation at the Three-Year Mark By James Gattuso and Diane Katz
Excerpt: “….During the three years of the Obama Administration, a total of 106 new major regulations have been imposed at a cost of more than $46 billion annually, and nearly $11 billion in one-time implementation costs. This amount is about five times the cost imposed by the prior Administration of George W. Bush.”
Too funny, but sadly true. Some additions: If you studied “civics” in school, you are an old fart. If you are well versed in the heroes of American history, you are an old fart. If you stand and salute when the flag goes by, you are an old fart. If you know who we fought in WWII and why, you are an old fart. http://thehill.com/blogs/healthwatch/health-reform-implementation/216223-cbo-millions-of-americans-could-lose-their-employer-coverage
Excerpt: As many as 20 million Americans could lose their employer-provided coverage because of President Obama's healthcare reform law, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a new report Thursday. The figure represents the worst-case scenario, CBO says, and the law could just as well increase employer coverage by 3 million people in 2019. (ObamaCare—the gift that keeps on giving. ~Bob.)
UN: Iran executes anti-Islam citizens: Many who die for drug offenses were originally arrested for resisting the regime.
Excerpt: Iran executed 670 people in 2011, including more than 20 for offenses against Islam, a UN investigator said in Geneva on Monday. The vast majority of people Iran executed in 2011 were convicted of drug offenses that do not merit capital punishment under international law, former Maldives foreign minister and current UN investigator Ahmed Shaheed said. He also reported a wide range of violations by Iran of UN human rights accords, from abuse of minorities to persecution of homosexuals and labor unions.
Election Year Math by William Tucker
Excerpt: It'll all come down to three states that went for Obama last time. If you want to know what's going to happen in the presidential race next November, just look at the above map. It shows the results of the 2004 election, won by George W. Bush with 286 electoral votes over John Kerry's 251.
VIDEO: Mia Love makes the economic case - by Ed Morrissey, Hotair.com
Excerpt: Tina interviewed Love at CPAC, so be sure to watch that again, too. We need grassroots candidates like Love competing for House seats, as well as state-legislature races, in order to get real change in Washington DC . Speaking of which, while tonight’s caucuses won’t be definitive for Orrin Hatch, he’s taking them seriously nonetheless:
After 66 years, Northport man, 89, gets medal for WWII service
Excerpt: About 300 friends, family, veterans and VA staff attended the ceremony in the Sports Atrium, which included an honor guard, singing of the national anthem, medal presentation and playing of “The Army Song.” Fowler and family members rolled up to Building 137 in a stretch limousine, escorted by VA and Northport police. “Well, they overdid it,” Sgt. Fowler said later, at a reception in the Serenity Garden at the VA. “I appreciate it, don’t get me wrong. But we wouldn’t have went through what we went through just for some medals.” (Still modest and humble, something that is present in a lot of his generation. It's amazing how fast the Army can get things done when they want to look good. --MasterGuns)

Pentagon: Afghan security breach was more serious than reported
Excerpt: The Pentagon acknowledged Thursday that a security breach during Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta’s visit to Afghanistan was much more serious than officials first reported, saying that an Afghan man tried to ram a stolen truck into a group of VIPs who were waiting to greet Panetta just moments after his plane landed at a military base. The driver set himself on fire Wednesday and apparently tried but failed to ignite containers of gasoline in the cab of the truck as he attempted to run over several high-ranking Marine officers and others who were waiting for Panetta’s plane to park, said Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.

Murder, Incorporated: Bruce Springsteen Goes All-In with #OWS
Excerpt: You expect rock stars to be liberal, even stridently leftist. Like movie stars, they don’t experience reality the way you and I do because they are hedged off from it behind phalanxes of security guards and ridiculous income levels…..What he should not do is what he does on his latest album, which is to advocate violent revolution, class-and-politics-based bloodshed, and the murder of bankers and perhaps other capitalists.

Three soldiers shot in France : Two paratroopers killed and another critically injured by gunman on scooter in second such attack within a week
Excerpt: Investigators fear a killer on a scooter is targeting soldiers after two were killed and one seriously injured in the second "ride-by" assassination in less than a week.
Three members of a parachute regiment were shot in a busy French town centre on Thursday lunchtime. Two died instantly, while the third was reported to be in a critical condition in hospital on Thursday night.
One of Two Outcomes
Excerpt: The American proletariat really worries me – more than any other single thing. Because it will require a police state to contain it – or it will become the state. I suspect we are headed for one of two likely outcomes: A Latin American-style strong-arm government, in which the proletariat is kept in check (and chained) by extreme brutality. Think Juan Peron – or current Mexico. Or, the proletariat will sweep away the current order and we end up with an American Soviet Union – or Cuba. (My fears are more collapse and chaos—think Rome in seventh century—than dictatorship. ~Bob.)
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/293577/will-afghanistan-end-iraq-or-vietnam-victor-davis-hanson
Excerpt: There are lots of legitimate differences over U.S. policy in Afghanistan. Arguments continue over what happened to the “good” or “real” war that after the first five years of relative quiet (from 2001 through 2006 there were never more than 100 Americans lost per year) began heating up in 2007–8 (even as Iraq quieted), and by 2009 (317 lost) and 2010 (499 lost) had become a mess, even as we began to pour reinforcements and more money into the country. (No one to this date has explained adequately why violence increased even as we put more troops and material into the country and disengaged our efforts and attention from Iraq.
California Sounds Retreat in War on Arithmetic
Excerpt: California is staging a limited retreat in the war on arithmetic—but it’s vowing to fight on. Just like in New York, where the state legislature recently vetoed a plan to put the state’s wobbly pensions on stable footing, California is facing a crisis borne out by numbers. The problem bedeviling California is the gap between the money it has promised to pay retirees and the money it has—or expects to have—to pay the claims, estimated at about $500 billion late last year.
