45 years ago tomorrow, November 7, 1972, i was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate, defeating the incumbent, Senator Joe Ward, by nine votes (126 after the recount), in a 4-1 Democrat district that had last elected a Republican in 1938. I was reelected four times by large margins, and retired undefeated in 1982, having grown burned out from it. But there were good times.
