Random Thoughts for August 2023

Random Thoughts for August 2023

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health: I had my six-month review July 7 at the VA 7/6. FEV numbers and 6-minute walk were better than last time. Tired a lot but I think that goes with being 77. All else fine.

Facts about Sen. Tim Scott, candidate for president. (I have a Scott bumper sticker on my car.)

Today is the first day of the rest of your wasted life.

“To override the Constitution with a racial agenda is to make the same error as segregationists of the past.”  ~ Justice Clarence Thomas

“My hope is constant in thee, Clan Donald.”  ~ Robert the Bruce

I’m sure the Canadian Wildfire have released so much carbon into the air that they have negated all the carbon-reduction efforts worldwide this year. All we need is a volcano or two.

“When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the losers.” ~ Socrates

I just read Britian after Rome; a history focused on the common people. Despite the ignorance of Sen. Tim Kane, who believes that slavery was, “Invented in America,” both the Romans and their British and Saxon successors held slaves. Income inequality was rampant too, as in every society, with the elites receiving tribute from the common folk.

Given that every society before Western Civilization and Capitalism had slaves, and that your ancestors double with each generation, the conclusion is inescapable: We are all descended from slaves.

“Progressives need only hate a group for it to be labeled a hate group.’ ~ National Review.

Is there anything the left touches that doesn’t turn to shit?” ~ George

At the start of WWII, the British military had long favored class over merit. They paid in lives until that folly was discarded. Our military now favors diversity over merit. And the country will pay in lives for that folly.

“The left (would) prefer a world where everyone is destitute to one in which most people are middle class and a few are rich.” ~ Lionel Shriver

To have equity, you must keep the best people from reaching their full potential.

“Boredom is the root of all evil.” ~ Kiekegaard

For the left “Justice” means Just Us.

“Si vis pacem, para bellum.” ~ Rome

Abortion has become the holy sacrament of the left.

“A nation cannot survive treason from within.” ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero.

The Army has done away with physical fitness standards for transgender soldiers. That tells you a lot about women trying to become men and vice versa.

I find the world is full of useless people. Or maybe my patience is gone in my old age.

“I have a good strategy for dealing with student loans. I think that the original culprit in this loan situation (scam) is the over inflated cost of the schools for which the loans was taken out. All of these schools should assume 1/4 to 1/3 of each of their student's debt. The remaining debt should be paid off by the ultra-rich advocates for loan cancellation. The borrower student should then be required to make payments commensurate with their ability to pay. The new loans would only increase by the yearly inflation rate, plus a 3 percent penalty to be imposed if they allow the loan to go delinquent, yet again. Make the liberal/progressives put their money where their mouth is. The well off, but not ultra-rich, progressives could be formed into collectives, since they like communism so much, and pool their money to "buy" these student loans, as part of this system.” ~ JP

Some people think they are rebels, when most other people think they are assholes.

“Sometimes you have to burn a few bridges to keep the crazies from following you.” ~ BISS

There will be trouble in Wokeland when they find out how Muslims feel about blacks and gays.

“They were challenging a powerful, authoritarian…who equated criticism of his policies with treason and employed a full complement of dirty tricks to stamp our dissent.” Trump? Obama? Biden? No Chamberlain. ~Lynne Olson, Troublesome Young Men (The MPs who brought Churchill to power in 1940.)

It seems I spend half my life waiting for others to do what they are supposed to do so I can do what I’m supposed to do.

“Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.” ~ Thomas Paine

Where is Guy Fawkes now that we need him?

“…while freedom of the press continued to exist in Britain, there was little freedom within the press.” ~ 1937, “Troublesome Young Men.”

In the 1939, Churchill was regarded by most MPs as unfit for higher office because his anti-appeasement views made him “far right.”

Troublesome Young Men: The Rebels Who Brought Churchill to Power and Helped Save England by Lynne Olson

Troublesome Young Men: The Rebels Who Brought Churchill to Power and Helped Save England by Lynne Olson

This wonderful book just came to my attention. The setting is the start of WWII in Britain, but it touches on the fighting only tangentially. It is a story of politics. Chamberlin had a huge majority in the house of Commons who supported his appeasement policies. He and his party were also universally supported by the press—a warning of the danger of the press all being in one party’s bed. A small group of Tory anti-appeasers set out to topple him. It looked hopeless, but they though the Fate of Britain was in the balance. This is the true story of how they won, and the price they paid, though it reads like a political thriller. If you are interested in politics, or history you won’t want to miss this book.

Trans data?

This has become perhaps the hot topic of our times, in the news pretty

much daily, with very passionate people claiming it's a wonderful thing
that saves lives and makes happy lives where before there was misery.

We do know some individuals benefit from it and lead happier lives.  We
also know other individuals discover it was an enormous mistake for them
and end up with even more misery in their lives.  Do we have any kind of
meaningful statistics on what the real breakdown is of individual
results, how many really happy, how many really unhappy, how many maybe
somewhere in between?  So far the answer is no.

But other countries where the practice has been supported longer and
better than here have been accumulating data.  A 2011 study at the
Karolinska Institute in Sweden followed 324 sex reassignment patients for
decades. After 10 years, patients had increased mental difficulties.
Suicide mortality rose to almost 20 times the rate of those who did not
transition.  Drug and alcohol abuse were also very common, far more than
in the general population.

People tend to transition looking for something that will solve whatever
problems and anxieties they have, make them a new person that leaves
behind all those troubling issues.  Clearly for a very significant
fraction of these people the solution they envisioned and the stress free
life they anticipated do not materialize.  One might make the case that
for many of them what was needed was extensive therapy, although it must
be noted that not even that solves the personal problems of all.

I am waiting to see when some courageous psychologists undertake to do an
objective study of people who transitioned over time, and also any who
were at one point considering transitioning but decided not to do so.
However, given that any such study would instantly get those involved
attacked viciously, I'm not sure if we'll see any such anytime soon.  Yet
for the good of all the people with problems who now consider
transitioning, generating the real data on the success vs failure rate of
the process, and perhaps what characteristics of the person make success
more likely, would be a true service.  Knowing the truth of a complex
situation is infinitely better than confusion and rabid activism.

Book Recommendation

Island: The Complete Stories by Alistair MacLeod

https://www.amazon.com/Island-Complete-Stories-Alistair-MacLeod/dp/0393341186/ref=sr_1_1?crid=31NS6M4N8F50D&keywords=the+island+MacLeod&qid=1689205190&s=books&sprefix=the+island+macleod%2Cstripbooks%2C124&sr=1-1

The collection of MacLeod’s short stories is set mainly in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia. His writing is so evocative you can’t help feeling these are real people—and real animals. Like his great novel, “No Great Mischief,” it is full of the sadness and joy of living. Often his characters speak in the Gaelic of the Scotland their ancestors came from. (He mostly translates.)  If he wrote copy for cereal boxes, I would read it. I’m giving two copies as Christmas gifts. I regret that he is gone now, so there will be no more of these wonderful stories. Moren Taign, Alistair. I highly recommend this collection.

Britain After Rome: The Fall and Rise, 400 to 1070 by Robin Fleming

Britain After Rome: The Fall and Rise, 400 to 1070 by Robin Fleming

https://www.amazon.com/Britain-After-Rome-Fall-Rise/dp/014014823X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2AU06D0CS2E4I&keywords=britain+after+rome&qid=1688678225&s=books&sprefix=britian+after+rome%2Cstripbooks%2C111&sr=1-1

I picked up this interesting history in a thrift shop. I’m a history buff, and am interested in the period, having read Bernard Cornwell’s great “Last Kingdom” series. This is a different kind of history, focused more on how the common people lived and died, than kings, warlords, or prelates. It is based on the evidence of archology, rather than the few surviving manuscripts of the period, most of which had an obvious, biased agenda. It details the spread of Christianity through the Saxons, Angles, and eventually the Danes. It examines grave finds to determine trade routes and customs. In one grave yard, 50% of the women who were alive at 15 were dead by 25. (Men lived longer than women then, reversed now.) it will make you glad you didn’t live in the “romantic” middle ages. I recommend this book to folks serious about learning history.

warning from the past

The explanation of the KGB defector so many years ago has very direct bearing on what we see happening in this country now.  Except the process of "ideological subjugation" is now a virus that works on its own, it no longer needs any outside agitator to keep it progressing.  To a large extent, "We have met the enemy and this is us!" applies.  We have far more than enough  home grown enemies of our way of life and assorted real crazies to keep the process of cultural suicide going.  What is needed is a huge, widespread revolt by Americans against all this.  Starting with the next election when a tidal wave of votes kicks the "progressives" out of power and a slow return to some kind of sanity begins.

Book Reommendations

Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles

https://www.amazon.com/Enemy-Women-Paulette-Jiles/dp/0061337633/ref=sr_1_1?crid=348U7O4EXBCG5&keywords=enemy+women+paulette+jiles+book&qid=1688413030&s=books&sprefix=enemy+women%2Cstripbooks%2C115&sr=1-1

I found this novel about the Civil War in SE Missouri in a thrift shop. It started slow, but about half way through I couldn’t put it down. This is a novel of great depth and insight. It is easy to see why it was a best seller. The characters hold you long after the novel is finished. The only thing I didn’t like was the author’s refusal to use quotation marks when someone is speaking. I intend to give a copy as a Christmas gift. This is a don’t miss.

No Great Mischief: A Novel by Alistair MacLeod

https://www.amazon.com/No-Great-Mischief-Alistair-MacLeod/dp/0393341194/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1MA5P3XI9PL1U&keywords=no+great+mischief+by+alistair+macleod&qid=1688414116&s=books&sprefix=No+Great+mischief%2Cstripbooks%2C112&sr=1-1

The title comes from a derogatory remark by General James Wolff, who said that using Highland troops was good because if they fell, it was “No great mischief.” You should read this novel just for MacLeod’s use of language. The novels follows the fortunes of a family founded by Column MacDonald who immigrated to Cape Breton from Scotland. It has both joy and sadness. If you have any affinity for things Scottish, don’t miss this book.
