Random Thoughts for January 2021

Random Thoughts for January 2021

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health update: I’m pretty much recovered from the left lung removal in June. Stomach only upset infrequently, appetite back, weight 158.9 lbs. last Sunday compared to 158.5 the day of the operation (It got down to 137.7. I have now cut way back on the Halvah bars I was eating to gain weight. Gained 10 lbs. in December.) Pain in left side mostly gone. Still sleeping 10-11 hours a day, but off the anti-fungal, so perkier. Big problem now is the osteo-arthritis in my right hip. Lots of pain. Using a walker at home, a wheelchair at the VA and an electric cart at the store. Will try to convince the VA to do a hip replacement; risky because I’m immune-suppressed. But I came through the lung removal okay. If not, will have to look at mobility scooters. I will be 75 in April, if I’m spared (as the Scots say). So I’m definitely old.

I still don’t do messenger on Facebook.

And when someone on Facebook says, “Bet you won’t share,” they win.

I’m not saying “Happy New Year” until I get some assurance it will be happy. It may be worse.

I’m all for “Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men,” provided the men don’t want to tell me what religion to follow, or to rule, enslave, or kill me. See, that’s gonna be a problem right there with the whole goodwill thing.

It feels like people put up more Christmas lights this year, and earlier. Maybe needed a little cheer.

Let he who is without sin cast the first tweet!

Trump supporters think Biden and his family are crooks. Biden supporters think Trump and his family are crooks. Could they both be right?

“The spirit of which I speak creates imaginary and magnifies the real causes of complaint; arrogates to itself every virtue—denies every merit of its opponents; secretly entertains the worst designs…mounts to pulpit, and, in the name of a God of mercy and peace, preaches discord and vengeance; invokes the worst scourges of Heaven, war, pestilence, and famine, as preferable alternatives to party defeat; blind, vindictive, cruel, remorseless, unprincipled, and at last frantic, it communicates its madness to friends as well as foes; respects nothing, fears nothing.” –Sen. Edward Livingston, speech to the Senate, 1830

National Review reports that the 2019 world energy numbers. From wind and solar: 1.5%. From Hydro: 2.7%. From nuclear: 1.7%. From burning coal, gas, oil, wood and biofuels: 94%. I guess Hot Air from proponents of the Green New Deal might add about .5%.

"Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.

Trouble no one about his religion.

Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours.

Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long and of service to your people.

Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,

or even a stranger, if in a lonely place.

Show respect to all people, but grovel to none.

When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light,

for your life, for your strength.

Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living.

If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools

and robs the spirit of its vision.

When your time comes to die,

be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death,

so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time

to live their lives over again in a different way.

Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home."

Funny how the right loved AG Barr and the left hated him. Switched now.

So I’m in the VA for bloodwork. Guy at the kiosk in front of me doesn’t put his VA card in. (Which you need to do to verify it’s you.) Paper pasted to the bottom of the machine says: To complete your registration press:

PRINT NUMBER

This gives you your room number and where you are in line.

So he reaches out and presses “print number” on the paper!

Th problem isn’t those who distrust the media. The problem is that so many still trust it.

Nothing says “I support slavery” like buying Nike products.

Watch for the Biden administration to transfer money from your wallet to prop up failing pension systems in Democrat run cities and states.

It has become clear that Trump rejecting the TPP played into China’s hands.

Trump thinks Russia is fine. Biden thinks China is fine. Both are enemies of the US.

In 1960, 40% of the world lived in severe poverty according to the World Bank. Now less than 10% do. Thanks you free markets.

According to National Review it takes 150 tons of coal and two tuns of rare earth minerals to make one wind turbine. This will save the earth?

We finished our Christmas shopping in November. But we didn’t stop.

“I have found alimony and a mortgage a pretty good way to cure writers block. I highly recommend it.”  –Arthur Roberts.

Facebook posters seem to think everyone who voted for Trump thinks alike.

Funny how the people calling for unity are also calling for draconian action against Trump and Republicans.

A vet I interviewed for My Life, My Story at the Madison VA told me his philosophy is that, “You are a product of your environment until you know better. Once you know better, it’s up to you. That keeps you from blaming anybody else; I can’t blame Vietnam, I can’t blame my mom, I have to take responsibility for myself.” Wish everybody thought this way.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. Their very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be ‘cured’ against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. C. S. Lewis.

In chess, politics, or war, it is fatal to assume your opponent is doing, or will do, what you want him to do.

The Grinch is a Democrat.

The more the left talks about limiting the Second Amendment, the more guns and ammo are sold.

When Black Lives Matter defaced the memorials to General Grant, Colonel Heg, the gallant black regiment the 54th Massachusetts, and others who fought slavery, the ghosts of slave owners grinned and muttered, “We told you the darkies didn’t want freedom.”

“That special infatuation with sentimentality we continue to misname Liberalism.” –Roger Kimble.

Thee elites who preach socialism always seem to keep their luxuries, money, and capital investments.

(Speaking of the UN.) “Why in the world should any sensible person give a damn what the spokesman for cannibalistic tribes or slave-holding nomads things about nuclear testing?”  --James Burnham

If the people who want to bring down America succeed, they will find that what replaces it is much, much worse.

Postpone your responsibilities and they will bite you hard tomorrow.

With Trump-haters having said they wouldn’t take the vaccine because it was produced by his Warp Speed program and they don’t trust Trump, and Trump lovers saying they won’t take it because Fauci recommends it and they don’t trust Fauci, there should be plenty for the rest of us.

Guy told me to go to an AA meeting. I said I already had plenty of batteries.

The Warnock Media Blackout

 The Warnock Media Blackout

Democracy dies in darkness ... except when reporting could upend the fortunes of a prominent Democrat

What Big Tech Didn’t Want You To See On The Federalist In 2020

To repeat a basic fact, for a democracy to function hinges on the voters being able to get factual, responsible news reporting from the media. In the past the media were newspapers first, later on came radio, after that came TV, and now we are well into the age of the Internet. The regular media are well known to be biased in their reporting, which is more than bad enough, but a large fraction of people now depend on social media for a lot of their news. After all, it's so easy to tune into the Net whenever you feel like it to see what's being said on the major platforms that have hundreds of millions of followers. The dramatically evident bias against conservative sources in these platforms has become impossible to deny for any who look at the facts of what has gone on there, as shown below. (Of course those on the Left just say no, these platforms are being "responsible" in filtering out the "bad stuff". Reminds me of Pravda and Izvestia and of course media in China today.) We all have to hope that somehow Congress will get motivated to find a way to force these companies to either print everythiing or filter everything the same way. Right now they are damaging to the information flow a free society depends on. --Del

Ring Out the Old, Bring In the New. By JIM GERAGHTY

Ring Out the Old, Bring In the New. By JIM GERAGHTY

Excerpt: I think President-elect Joe Biden and his administration will get stuck in the mud pretty fast. Biden was elected to not be Donald Trump, and he’ll manage that part of the job from the first minute. And maybe he’ll get some cooperation from Mitch McConnell here and there. Biden’s ability to get Democratic priorities enacted becomes stronger if Democrats win both Senate races in Georgia. Right now, I think the two races will split, as Georgians, exhausted after a seemingly endless season of attack ads dissecting four flawed candidates, hedge their bets. In almost any scenario, West Virginia senator Joe Manchin and Maine senator Susan Collins remain two of the most powerful people in Washington. Beyond that . . . Biden is a 78-year-old longtime senator who was elected to get the pandemic under control, not to enact a sweeping revolution of the economy and society. There just isn’t a legislative majority for the full Biden agenda, and congressional Republicans know what they oppose. They just can’t easily unify behind another alternative agenda, particularly on health care. After the chaos, partisan rage, and post-election whiplash of the Trump and Obama eras, polite gridlock could be good for the country, forcing Congress to build bipartisan majorities to pass legislation, and recognizing that no matter how much one vehemently disagrees with the opposing party, they deserve convincing, too.

Barr Points to the True Culprit—Comey’s FBI Team

Barr Points to the True Culprit—Comey’s FBI Team

Excerpt: Who within the FBI was responsible? Ever since Hillary Clinton’s possible criminal woes surfaced, James Comey went to unusual lengths to keep all of her investigations closely held in a tightly knit headquarters (“HQ”) cabal. Pushing out experienced HQ agents to retirement or other posts, Comey surrounded himself with selected, like-minded agents. The meteoric rise of Andrew McCabe from the Washington field office to headquarters and then quickly to Number Two, was unprecedented. Normally, as in Watergate, the Washington field office would be deeply entrenched in any Washington-based investigation, with Headquarters involvement as necessary. But all the Clinton and Trump investigations were kept in Headquarters, with Field Office agents tasked to perform non-sensitive tasks without input into confidential discussions. Some may have wondered why all investigations affecting political actors appear to have been handled by the same few agents—Comey, McCabe, Strzok. To be sure, as Horowitz describes, one unnamed case agent and one unnamed supervising special agent were also part of Comey’s tight HQ squad, but why were these same five individuals—getting legal advice from a handpicked sixth, Lisa Page—subordinated, unusually, to McCabe? The transparent motive of the team to whitewash Hillary Clinton’s obvious misdeeds (e.g., giving immunity without honest cooperation to those bludgeoning the subpoenaed Clinton server) was proven, ironically, by the delayed “re-opening” of the Clinton classified information investigation, until several days before the election, on October 28, 2016. [If this is true and accurate, it both explains and fits together with a lot of the other things that we know were going on at the same time. Now that Biden is the President-in-waiting, the most likely outcome is the media will simply lose all interest in the origin of the “Russian collusion” investigations of Trump. The Dem’s have succeeded in poisoning the well for the last four years. We need to make sure they pay a high price for that or they’ll do it again. Ron P.]

China buying media

STUNNING: All Major Western Media Outlets Take ‘Private Dinners’, ‘Sponsored Trips’ From Chinese Communist Propaganda Front

A host of corporate media outlets including CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and MSNBC have participated in private dinners and sponsored trips with the China-United States Exchange Foundation, a Chinese Communist Party-funded group seeking to garner “favorable coverage” and “disseminate positive messages” regarding China, The National Pulse can reveal.

Other outlets involved in the propaganda operation include Forbes, the Financial Times, Newsweek, Bloomberg, Reuters, ABC News, the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, AFP, TIME magazine, LA Times, The Hill, BBC, and The Atlantic.

If Nothing Else Goes Right, At Least You Know Who You Are

If Nothing Else Goes Right, At Least You Know Who You Are

Excerpt: But whatever problems you have, you probably haven’t spent years building up a public persona of a Latina because you’re not happy with who you actually are. No matter what else happens in life, at least you’ve got that. On Sunday morning, a now-restricted-access thread on Twitter laid out all the ways through which Hilaria Baldwin, the wife of actor Alec Baldwin, a yoga instructor, author, podcaster, and the kind of celebrity who managed to escape my attention until this week did that very thing. Born Hillary Hayward-Thomas, apparently Mrs. Baldwin reinvented her entire life — a bit like The Great Gatsby.

LA DA George Gascón has an offer no criminal can refuse

This lady is making the most of an opportunity to make life safer for the people in her district who elected her.  She's pointing out to criminals that they can avoid all the risks they take doing crime where she is the DA by relocating their chosen work only slightly to where their risk factor drops like a stone.  What great adaptivity to the situation around her!  I can see a lot of citizens in her area kicking in campaign funds for her next time the election comes around, she's taking her job of taking care of them very seriously.  What a neat idea, maybe it could catch on in other places?

Detailed discussion of anarchists and antifa groups

Your Trauma and Mine: A Retrospective on 2020

Your Trauma and Mine: A Retrospective on 2020

Excerpt: Lockdown shell shocked me like nothing else in my lifetime. The very notion that governments would push the off button on half the economy, throwing out all concerns for freedom and human rights, was beyond any dystopia I had ever imagined. And that was when it was supposed to last two weeks. (...) Even after all this time, there is a dearth of evidence of any verified relationship between lockdowns and reducing severe outcomes of the virus. All this destruction of life, liberty, and property and to what end? It wasn’t clear in March and it still is not clear at the end of the year. It was a wild experiment that should never have taken place, and it has failed miserably. The hubris of the disease planners has been appalling to behold. They could not bring themselves to admit failure. So they kept doubling down. No amount of social and economic carnage seemed to shake them. Cancer screenings and vaccinations collapsed, dentistry services fell 70%, suicide ideation and drug overdoses soared as predicted, the arts fell apart, 100,000 businesses are dead, and even the murder rate reversed its decades-old declining trajectory and shot up. That’s right: when you destroy the basis of civilization, you become uncivilized. [An excellent essay by Jeffery Tucker on what has happened, how it has been dealt with, and a possible path forward. Well worth reading. Ron P.].

Rutgers pays new 'Equity' VP $300,000, despite projected $200 million COVID losses

The frantic drive in academia to be "woke" as possible is creating new records for cushy, extremely well paid jobs.  The lady below has spent her life on three things, race, race, and oh yeah, race.  She got her PhD in this stuff, was immediately hired by a university, has progressed nicely since, and just hit the jackpot.  But, BTW, her $300K salary is not the record holder for academic officeholers in the "diversity" industry, there's another person out there at over $500K if you can believe it. These are not people who are going to help make young minds sharper, inculcate Critical Thinking, devoted to objective examination of history, but hey, they'll know the statistics related to how Black women cleaning ladies were paid compared to others back in the 1920s, etc.  Those are gems of knowledge that'll most certainly contribute in major ways to the future lives of the students.  And according to the ratings of this lady by students, it's a very nice, easy class and guaranteed A if you just show up and do most of the readings.  What's not to like?
This is flat out craziness, a dramatic sign of how mentally ill academia has become.  And it contributes to the horrendous and indefensible cost of colleges now.  I am trying to figure out what to talk to my kids about as to where they might consider sending our grandchildren to college someday.  I'd love for them to get the kind of actual education I was fortunate to get so long ago, but don't know where that's still available. --Del

Who Made the Vaccine Possible? Not WHO

Excellent article, just a fair and reasonable look at the reality.  The last lines don't claim sainthood or anything like it for Trump, but that's not the point.  We have no lack of people pointing out loudly and repeatedly all his bad or at least questionable actions, fair enough, but acknowledging that he was not wrong in every idea and every action should not be so painful for his detractors.--Del

EXCERPT: "The last time I felt I was leaving a free society and entering an unfree one was when I visited the communist countries of Eastern Europe. As a graduate student majoring in communism, during the Cold War, I would travel through the countries known as Soviet satellites: Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. In the middle of my trips, I would stop in Austria to breathe free air. Never did I imagine I would ever experience anything analogous in America, the Land of the Free, the land of the Statue of Liberty and of the Liberty Bell. But I did yesterday, when leaving Florida and returning to California." (A clue to the upcoming "new normal?" --Bill)

Biden’s Energy Plans Are Expensive—and Dangerous

Oh dear, actual scientists presenting actual science. The concept of cheap, renewable, "natural" energy sources is extremely attractive, but while it's certainly worth exploring where it's most practical, believing a high technology, high energy usage society can run off it completely or even mostly is a fantasy. Below two well qualified technical guys show that, clearly, concisely, and very solidly. When people way up in power engage in fantasies the end result for the people is always bad. --Del

The American Left Has Now Fully Embraced Racism

It's amazing in a way that so far there's been so little really clear recognition that the whole basis of Critical Race Theory is in fact based on the exact same thinking about races that underlay slavery.  That telling everyone they must find and accept their racial identity is an essential part of being an acceptable human being is in reality the way to solidify racist thinking, accepting that people of different races are not truly equivalent to each other as human beings.  And that the incredible common use of accusations of racism on any pretext at all has become a form of aggressive oppression of anyone who won't follow the new agenda to the letter.

Latest interest example was a group of freshmen at Trinity College requesting permission to form a group call the Churchill Club, whose purpose was to read more of the classic books of Western Civilization, such as John Locke.  They were attacked widely and nastily in a variety of ways, accused repeatedly of being White Supremacists, and eventually the student union denied them permission to exist.  When the story went public and embarrassed the school, suddenly they were told they didn't need permission from the student government, just go ahead and do it.  The harassment has continued, at least as much from professors as from students.

It is time for people to stand up and say (or scream) ENOUGH, ALREADY!  Maybe if enough people keep pointing out that the way to lessen the remaining racism in our society is certainly not served by pushing racist concepts on everyone, some of this madness will start to recede.

'Dr. Jill Biden’ Sure Flies with the U.S.-Hating, Stalinist Castro Regime

Lots of flak flying about Joe's wife, her use of honorifics (which is really a minor thing, although still noteworthy), but what's more important is what she's really done using her fame and position.  As discussed below.  Anyone who has kissed up to the Castro regime deserves scorn, but no one in our media really wants to cover in any depth all the horrors and oppression they have inflicted on the Cuban people and others. --Del

Joe Biden says his son Hunter is the "smartest man I know"

Joe Biden says his son Hunter is the "smartest man I know"

Headline: Biden Says Hunter Is 'the Smartest Man I Know'; He's Being 'Used to Get to Me'
What's Up: The First Couple-Elect Jill and Joe Biden appeared on Stephen Colbert's late night show and were given the opportunity to make a statement on the controversies swirling around their son Hunter. Joe's response was brief, but not without controversy.

Quote: "'Well, look,' Biden said, pausing briefly. 'We have great confidence in our son. I am not concerned about any accusation made against him. It's used to get to me. I think it's kind of foul play, but look, it is what it is. And he's a grown man -- he is the smartest man I know, I mean, in a pure intellectual capacity. And as long as he's good, we're good.'" — CNSNews.com

The First take: We're just thinking... Joe Biden was vice president for eight years. One imagines there were a whole bunch of really smart people coming in and out of the White House, to say nothing of the guy who selected Joe to be his VP. So, Hunter Biden is smarter than Barack Obama? That's gonna be an awkward moment at the Inauguration (if it happens).

Christmas from the White House

A short video by the President and First Lady at the White House.  Language and religious statements from the President that perhaps many will be surprised at, and which some would find objectionable.  I thought it's very well done, but look for yourself and see what you think.

FDA says Pfizer vaccine vials hold extra doses, expanding supply

FDA says Pfizer vaccine vials hold extra doses, expanding supply

Excerpt: Pharmacists have found a way to squeeze extra doses out of vials of Pfizer's vaccine, potentially expanding the nation's scarce supply by up to 40 percent. The Food and Drug Administration said late Wednesday that those extra doses could be used, clearing up confusion that had caused some pharmacists to throw away leftover vaccine for fear of violating the rules the agency set last week. "Given the public health emergency, FDA is advising that it is acceptable to use every full dose obtainable," an agency spokesperson told POLITICO, mirroring language that a federal health official sent to state vaccine providers Wednesday morning. The federal government has not publicly announced the guidance; Pfizer learned of the change this afternoon. The Pfizer vials are supposed to hold five doses, but pharmacists have found they have enough for a sixth or even a seventh dose. [The story continues below the ads by explaining why and how the “extra” doses happened. This is VERY good news. Ron P.]
