Mark Hans Smith Special Forces And Ranger Poser Gets Free K9 Training With Lies
Excerpt: Spokane Washington- Mark Hans Smith of Spokane Washington has been claiming to be a Sniper with Special Forces, and a Ranger. But he isn’t just claiming to be any Sniper, Mark is one of the “U.S. Army’s Top Snipers”. He Also claims to have a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Army Occupation Medal. He has used these claims to receive free items in excess of $1,000, while sporting badges and tabs that he did not earn. He defrauded a K9 training club, Protection K9 Training Club, out of free training with his false claims. One of our admins noticed the photos when the K9 club posted them to their Facebook page, and of course was immediately suspicious. Once we knew he was lying, we contacted the club owner, who was shocked to learn of this as he was providing Mark free training because of his service. Mark also told him he was the third most highly decorated Veteran in Spokane! After we contacted the club owner, he asked Mark for a copy of his DD214, and once he did Mark disappeared. He has not only committed fraud, but has also committed a crime under the Stolen Valor act of 2013. One of our investigators, Fred, was in contact with Mr. Smith and spoke to him several times on the phone. When Fred asked for a DD214, Smith hung up on him and changed his number to prevent Fred from calling him back.

Ohio student suspended for staying in class during walkouts

Ohio student suspended for staying in class during walkouts
Excerpt: An Ohio high school student says he tried to remain nonpolitical during school walkouts over gun violence and was suspended for a day because he stayed in a classroom instead of joining protests or the alternative, a study hall. Hilliard senior Jacob Shoemaker says school isn't the place for politics, and he wasn't taking sides Wednesday. The district says it's responsible for students' safety and they can't be unsupervised. Jacob's citation for not following instructions was shared online by a friend, prompting a flood of messages to his father. Scott Shoemaker says some people thought his son was suspended for walking out, and angry comments accumulated, including some that mistook Scott for the principal. He says he also got a couple death threats and had to consider switching phone numbers. (No, these protests aren't political, they are spontaneous, the teachers and administrators are carefully nonpartisan, yep, all that. Except this kid doesn't leave the classroom to take part, and bingo! he's suspended.  Because he couldn't stay there unsupervised... ah, last time I checked it was the responsibility of the school to supply that supervision.  So they couldn't find a teacher or even an aide or a security person or anyone to sit in the classroom with him?  And he was instructed to leave the classroom?  How is instructing a student to leave the classroom a nonpartisan act? I love it when the leftists let the mask slip and really reveal themselves for what they are. --Del. Totalitarians. ~Bob)

The Circle

The Circle by Dave Eggers
I read this frightening novel for the “Right Book club” to which I belong. I can’t say I enjoyed it, because it is so easy to see it happening, and to an advocate of individual liberty, chilling. But it’s well-written and certainly held my interest. Imagine that Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon and every social media site and search engine are joined in one company. That can track anyone, find anyone, monitor anyone and, if necessary, destroy anyone through the development of vast new technologies. One of the founders sees the danger to individual freedom and attempts to stop it by winning over the main character. A very scary message about an all-too-possible future.

Excerpt: A week before Corey Johnson confessed to stabbing three people — one of them fatally — in a Palm Beach Gardens home, authorities were discussing pending federal criminal charges against the 17-year-old, according to a Jupiter police report. Johnson was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder after investigators say he killed 13-year-old Jovanni Sierra and stabbed Elaine Simon, 43, and her son 13-year-old, Dane Bancroft, during a sleepover at a home in BallenIsles County Club. Sweden Tries to 'Starve' Out Christian Asylum Seeker
Excerpt: Aideen Strandsson is a woman without a country. She may live in Sweden, but she is a stateless person, with no passport, no citizenship and no way to get a job. She lives every day with the knowledge she could be deported to her native Iran where, as a Christian, she would face grave danger. Sweden Remains Defiant Against Global Anger The world was outraged when the Swedish government decided to send Strandsson, who is a Christian and former Muslim, back to Iran where she could face prison, rape and even death. But a worldwide outcry over her situation has apparently not changed anything.

Questions Raised About Vietnam War Photos
Of course some North Vietnamese photographers were brave men who did good work, but it seems that doctoring photos "for the revolution" was an OK policy too for some. And then somehow the same photos get published in different books at different times as "the first ever", etc. Hmm.... who can you trust anymore? --Del

Trump's new economic adviser

Trump's new economic adviser: Tariffs Are Taxes. By LARRY KUDLOW, ARTHUR B. LAFFER & STEPHEN MOORE
Excerpt: Steel and aluminum may win in the short term, but steel-and-aluminum users and consumers lose.. One of the ironies of trade protectionism is that tariffs and import quotas are what we do to ourselves in times of peace and what foreign nations do to u‎s with blockades to keep imports from entering our country in times of war. Or consider that we impose sanctions on U.S. enemies such as North Korea, Russia, and Iran because we want them to feel the economic pain of being deprived of imports.

Trump's Steel and Aluminum Tariffs by Walter Williams

Trump's Steel and Aluminum Tariffs by Walter Williams
Excerpt: There are a couple of important economic lessons that the American people should learn. I'm going to title one "the seen and unseen" and the other "narrow well-defined large benefits versus widely dispersed small costs." These lessons are applicable to a wide range of government behavior, but let's look at just two examples. Last week, President Donald Trump enacted high tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Why in the world would the U.S. steel and aluminum industries press the president to levy heavy tariffs? The answer is simple. Reducing the amounts of steel and aluminum that hit our shores enables American producers to charge higher prices. Thus, U.S. steel and aluminum producers will earn higher profits, hire more workers and pay them higher wages. They are the visible beneficiaries of Trump's tariffs. But when the government creates a benefit for one American, it is a virtual guarantee that it will come at the expense of another American -- an unseen victim. The victims of steel and aluminum tariffs are the companies that use steel and aluminum. Faced with higher input costs, they become less competitive on the world market. For example, companies such as John Deere may respond to higher steel prices by purchasing their parts in the international market rather than in the U.S. To become more competitive in the world market, some firms may move their production facilities to foreign countries that do not have tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum. Studies by both the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Consuming Industries Trade Action Coalition show that steel-using industries -- such as the U.S. auto industry, its suppliers and manufacturers of heavy construction equipment -- were harmed by tariffs on steel enacted by George W. Bush.

Book recommendation: Wellington: The Years of the Sword

Book recommendation: Wellington: The Years of the Sword by Elizabeth Harman Pakenham, Countess of Longford
Since this excellent book runs to almost 500 pages, it is for those with a serious interest in military history or historical biography. It is both well-written and well-researched, with great photos. (Of paintings of course.) I knew only that Wellington’s peninsular campaign was a success, but not about individual battles. This book remedied that. And thought I knew a great deal about Waterloo, I discovered many new facets. It covers not only Wellington’s character, and his battles, but the complex political situation he had to deal with, the problems created by his brothers, and the need for reforms in the British army, starting with the way officers were selected. He was the indispensable man; Neither Waterloo nor many of the battles in Spain and Portugal could have been won by anyone else. His tactical brilliance was only matched by his ability to inspire troops to exceed all expectations. My only quibble is that the Countess often uses French phrases without translation, never supposing I guess that it would be read by members of the “lower orders” like myself who were deficient in the language. But this is only a slight distraction. I highly recommend this book.

Vietnamese refugees

Vietnamese refugees reunite with rescuers after decades of searching
Excerpt: After the fall of Saigon in 1975, more than a million desperate people fled Vietnam. Many of the refugees who escaped in small boats came to be called the boat people. Vietnamese immigrant Lauren Vuong was one of those people. Now a successful attorney, she's accomplished a lot in the four decades since then but until recently, one goal remained elusive: finding and thanking the men who rescued her at sea. (The stories of those who, at the serious risk of their lives, fled oppression for the chance at freedom, and who have come to join with us, to be Americans and contribute to the society and the nation. Those Americans born here who don't appreciate who we are and what we have should talk to those who have suffered, sacrificed, struggled to come here and know the worth of freedom. As imperfect as we are.... we are still good and need to celebrate that goodness. --Del. The refugees Democrats didn't want. ~Bob)

Why No Investigation Into FBI, Justice Dept. Collusion With Democrats To Spy On Trump? Turns Out, There Is One

Why No Investigation Into FBI, Justice Dept. Collusion With Democrats To Spy On Trump? Turns Out, There Is One
Russia Scandal: For weeks, official Washington and many voters have wondered: Why has there been no official investigation of the Justice Department and the FBI for their apparent misconduct in applying to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016? Now we know: Quietly, an investigation has already begun. The question has grown in importance in recent days as Rep. Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, released a letter they sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Tuesday urgently seeking an investigation. They cited a long list of possible abuses: "There is evidence of bias, trending toward animus, among those charged with investigating serious cases. There is evidence political opposition research was used in court filings. There is evidence this political opposition research was neither vetted before it was used nor fully revealed to the relevant tribunal."

NYT: Who Were the Real Nationalists in Vietnam?

Who Were the Real Nationalists in Vietnam? By Stephen B. Young
Excerpt: The Tet offensive was a turning point in the Vietnam War for Vietnamese nationalism. With North Vietnam having been turned over to the Communists by the French in 1954, Vietnam’s southern provinces had become a haven for non-Communist nationalists, just as the western states of Germany were a haven for German non-Communists and the southern half of Korea was a secure state for Korean nationalists. In the new state of South Vietnam, with American assistance, President Ngo Dinh Diem successfully built a functioning non-Communist state. Responding to this resilience of the nationalists, in 1959, the Communist regime in Hanoi decided to destroy what their rivals had achieved. Their intrusion into the internal affairs of South Vietnam made considerable headway, and set off what we now call the American war in Vietnam. But it took the Tet offensive to bring the various strains of southern nationalism together. In early March 1968, the American ambassador in Saigon, Ellsworth Bunker, reported to President Lyndon B. Johnson on a remarkable change among the South Vietnamese. Instead of falling apart, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam was growing — in February, after the Tet attacks, 10,084 South Vietnamese volunteered for military service, versus 3,924 the previous February. Some 10,600 draftees reported for duty that month, versus 4,006 the previous February. It wasn’t just that new recruits were signing up; veteran soldiers were staying, and stepping up. Of the 155 South Vietnamese regular maneuver battalions, 118 were rated combat effective. In the field, companies of the South Vietnamese Regional Forces, a militia that manned outposts and guarded critical infrastructure, were at fighting strength, with 99 out of a 123-man complement present for duty. The platoons of another militia, the Popular Forces, which guarded villages, were averaging 29 men out of a full complement of 35, another unprecedented turnout. The new civil defense militia was joined by 19,000 volunteers in 20 provinces. South Vietnam’s president, Nguyen van Thieu, stepped up to provide more vigorous leadership. He replaced corrupt and incompetent officials and personally headed the recovery committee charged with rebuilding destroyed or damaged infrastructure and buildings and resettling over 500,000 people who had fled Communist control. And elsewhere in national politics, new, surprising political coalitions formed to vociferously oppose Hanoi’s aggression. (Wow.... a really good NYTimes article about RVN! With actual facts and figures about the response of the nation to the Tet Offensive and how it brought about the strength and spirit that would have kept them free... if only we'd been as faithful an ally as Russia was. --Del)

Jonah Goldberg: Trumpism has no ideology beyond Trump. By JONAH GOLDBERG
Excerpt: Intellectuals and ideologically committed journalists on the left and right have a natural tendency to, and interest in, seeing events through the prism of ideas. Trump presents an insurmountable challenge to such approaches because, by his own admission, he doesn’t consult any serious and coherent body of ideas for his decisions. He trusts his instincts. Trump has said countless times that he thinks his gut is a better guide than the brains of his advisers. He routinely argues that the Presidents and policymakers who came before him were all fools and weaklings. That’s narcissism, not ideology, talking. Even the “ideas” that he has championed consistently — despite countervailing evidence and expertise — have no solid intellectual basis. He dislikes regulations because, as a businessman, they got in his way. He dislikes trade because he has a childish, narrow understanding of what “winning” means. Foreigners are ripping us off. Other countries are laughing at us. He doesn’t actually care about, let alone understand, the arguments suggesting that protectionism can work. Indeed, he reportedly issued his recent diktat on steel tariffs in a fit of pique over negative media coverage and the investigation into Russian election interference. His administration was wholly unprepared for the announcement.

I'll Rape You Too

Charges: Man crawled into woman's bathroom stall on MCTC campus
Excerpt: A 32-year-old Bloomington man is facing multiple charges after he reportedly hid in a women's bathroom at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, then crawled into a stall in an attempt to sexually assault a woman. Asad Abu Mohamed of Bloomington is charged with third degree criminal sexual conduct, making terroristic threats and fourth degree assault of a school official. ... After speaking with the woman, police learned she had gone into the women’s restroom, which had two stalls. She attempted to go into the larger handicap-accessible stall, but found it was locked, so she went into the smaller stall. While in the stall with her pants down, Mohamed crawled into her stall from the handicap-accessible stall. The woman immediately began kicking and screaming at Mohamed. She told police, he covered her mouth and told her he would kill her. The woman continued screaming and struggling with Mohammed. In the struggle, he ripped out her earring and pulled her hair. The woman told police she was convinced he was going to rape her. Bystanders nearby heard her screams and came to help. They found Mohamed choking the woman with one hand and smoking a glass pipe with his other hand. The woman was screaming and hitting Mohamed while her pants and underwear were down around her knees. MCTC security officers arrived soon after. One of the security officers used pepper spray on Mohamed when he resisted those who were trying to restrain him. Mohamed “swatted” at security, apparently attempting to cut them with the jagged glass pipe. The security officers managed to handcuff Mohamed before police arrived. The MCTC security supervisor received minor injuries in the struggle. When Minneapolis police arrived to take Mohamed into custody, an officer pat-frisked him for weapons. Mohamed told the officer to “f— off” and “I’ll rape you too.”
