In Interview, Top Indonesian Muslim Scholar Says Stop Pretending That Orthodox Islam and Violence Aren't Linked
And here is an excellent discussion of the problem in the Islamic world, by a valid authority. What I would more carefully call ultra-orthodox Islam is in its way just like all other really extremist groups, whether the White Supremacists or the Nazi fanatics. Not just total intolerance for any other group, but deep animosity and readiness to do violence to them, as righteous warriors. They are a minority in all of Islam, but unfortunately not a tiny one, and they have lots of money behind them. And there is a kind of infectious craziness about the idea of being a devoted warrior ready to die in a glorious campaign serving God, we see it take over people like Nidal Hasan and others who were born in and prospered in Western societies. As the scholar says, the problem must be recognized for what it is before there is any chance of making things better. --Del
