I try to make this blog your one-stop-shop for political
news and conservative opinion. Founded
in October, 2008, it gets 5k to 7k page views a week, most from the US ,
but hundreds from many countries worldwide. Feel free to post or forward to
friends who need to be better informed. The news posts are created from several
news feeds, from US and international websites, from twitter when I have spare
time to follow it, and by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I
would have often have missed or skipped. We owe them thanks and appreciation. I
try to include foreign sources and info you won’t get in the MSM, but I often
use links to pieces in the Washington
Post, New York Times, Politico, Reuters and other
left-of-center sources. No one is required to read the blog, or any of the
links. Trust me, no one reads everything posted, but scanning the headlines
will keep you informed, and you can click on stories you want to know more
about. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate
thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t
mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the
posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which
is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are
false, too far a stretch, or viciously inflammatory, regardless of the view
point. I also try to avoid items that will turn off thoughtful centrists and
leftists or low-information independents, including “red meat” pieces with
intemperate language or wild speculation, conspiracy theories with no
supporting facts and silly distractions like the so-called “birther” issue
(which I correctly predicted years ago was going nowhere, and wasted time and
energy), but I don’t always succeed. I use maybe 50% of the conservative pieces
sent me, probably less than 5% of the liberal opinion sent, usually to
illustrate their views. Readers who don’t like that are welcome to start their
own blogs. Readers who send formatted pieces (title, link, and a fair-use
excerpt of no more than three sentences unless the piece is very short, than
fewer) to tartanmarine(at)gmail.com have a higher chance of my using them than
people who just send a link. A piece without a link has a much lower chance of being used—it depends on how interesting it is
and how much time I have right then to search for it, and my time is limited
right now due to managing the lung transplant I received on December 23, 2013,
which has developed complications. I understand if you don’t have the time to
format or even to find a link—please understand I don't either. I often include
thoughtful comments from contributors. (Tell me if you want your full name
used.) There are no ads on my blog, no fees and I receive no income from it.
Now that I've retired, that might need to change, though I hate the ads on most
blogs. For now, that’s how it is. I do promote my books, with the royalties
going to charity. As always on the Net, as in the legacy media, you must read
these posts critically and with skepticism.

is not a right-to-work state, meaning that employees who go to work for
employers with union contracts are forced to join unions and pay dues or pay
agency fees. Because these dues and fees are required, unions are largely
unaccountable to workers. Moreover, strong union activity in Illinois
has discouraged businesses from locating in the state, which only hurts job
opportunities and prospects for Illinois
residents. ... From 2002 to 2012, states with right-to-work laws saw a 7.2
percent increase in payroll employment, compared to a 2 percent increase in
other states. As of September 2014, right-to-work states had an average
unemployment rate of 5.5 percent, compared to 6 percent in non-right-to-work
states. From 2000 to 2010, right-to-work states saw population growth that was
twice as fast as that in other states (13.6 percent compared to 7.3 percent). Median
wages in right-to-work states appear $4,345 lower than in other states.
However, once you take into account cost of living and local taxes,
right-to-work state wages rise. In fact, the cost of living is 16.6 percent
higher in states without right-to-work laws. Right-to-work economies grew by 62
percent from 2002 to 2012, compared to just 46.5 percent growth in other

Reforming the
Regulatory State

issued a new report with suggestions for the 114th Congress. The report is
aimed at economic growth and touches on everything from finance reform to labor
law. Also included in their recommendations is regulatory reform, with the
group calling for Congress to rein in executive power and limit regulatory
costs and burdens. Regulations are no small matter - they're expensive, and
they're burdensome: According to the Office of Management and Budget, annual
regulatory costs reached $102 billion in 2013. Additionally, regulations cost
Americans 9 billion hours of paperwork in order to comply.

Excerpt: In a piece for Politico, Jindal branded some
of these conservative wonks “cheap Democrats” because the alternatives they
have put forward would still, like Obamacare, offer tax credits for the
purchase of health insurance. (Many conservatives, including the Manhattan
Institute’s Avik Roy and Yuval Levin of National Affairs, have said repealing
Obamacare without a replacement law providing similar levels of coverage could
cause too much disruption.) Then he sent a letter to every member of Congress
urging them to “reject plans that copy Obamacare and raise taxes.” The letter
was accompanied by a petition and video message from the governor.

reporting that as many as six million Americans are going to be shocked
come April 15th. Seems there are that many Americans opted not to enroll
in an Obamacare program last year. They said, even with the generous Obama
subsidies they couldn't afford to spend $200 per month on health care. Accordingly,
these folks will be paying penalties that have doubled this year and will
affect how much they owe in income taxes, or how much money will be subtracted
from any refunds they are due. More than half of those affected say they didn't
know about penalties for not enrolling, then asked "how can the government
force you to buy something?" Guess they were all asleep when this got
kicked around by everybody from the Supremes to the Tea Party.

question into the debate just because it hurts the GOP. Almost all GOP
politicians are pro-vaccination, of course -- but a distressing number of

As I noted Monday, Barack Obama -- and Hillary Clinton! -- called for further research into
an alleged connection between vaccinations and autism rates. This isn’t because
they’re true vaccination skeptics, and not, as Obama defenders insist, that
back in 2008 the case for a connection between vaccinations and autism was
stronger. When you’re a politician, and you do town halls, there’s a good
chance you’ll encounter a parent of a child with autism utterly convinced that
some vaccine is what caused it. The last thing a politician wants to do is come
across as an unsympathetic jerk to a parent of a child with autism. So the safe
answer is not, “No, there’s no link between vaccinating children and autism,
and your denunciations of vaccination programs endanger public health,” it’s
for the candidate to express deep concern and sympathy and call for more
research. Of course, that sympathetic punting non-answer leaves the candidate
sounding like he may agree with the parent who is convinced that vaccines cause
autism. Plus, most officeholders and candidates probably feel some nagging
doubt about their ability to evaluate the merits of the claims of parents and
the contentions of the medical community.

The Islamic State's unfettered expansion in the Middle East has all but vanished, at least for now. Unfortunately,
the White House takes this to mean victory is commensurate with a geographic
stalemate. By Barack Obama's logic, an acquiescent foreign policy is justified
by self-convincingly belittling our enemies to a nominal threat. "What I
do insist on is we maintain a proper perspective and that we do not provide a
victory to these terrorist networks by over-inflating their importance and
suggesting in some fashion that they are an existential threat to the United
States or the world order," the president told CNN's serial plagiarist
Fareed Zakaria. No doubt al-Qaida operatives are nodding in agreement. Obama
explained that keeping terrorism in a proper perspective "means we don't
approach this with a strategy of sending out occupying armies and playing Whac-a-Mole
wherever a terrorist group appears because that drains our economic strength
and it puts enormous burdens on our military. What's required is a surgical,
precise response to a very specific problem." The wildfire-like spread of
jihadi fundamentalism demonstrates exactly why all radical Islamists
pose an existential threat, regardless of size. ISIL may represent the early
onset of a small, albeit vicious, cancer, but that doesn't mean the remedy is
letting it take its course. Because by the time it matures, it's too little,

I fear I would happily jail the "anti-vaccers." My wife is still suffering the effects of the polio she contracted as a child, while I recall the terror that swept my neighborhood when a classmate contracted diptheria. I want my grandkids protected from such preventable dangers.

What is the point are you trying to convey with that graphic where you compare Muslim extremists to Nazis? Should we have exterminated all of the Germans in an effort to eradicate the Nazis? Are you saying we need to exterminate all Muslims? There are over 1 BILLION Muslims in the world. You have a problem with over 1 billion humans simply because some people of their faith have chosen to become extremists? This graphic is incredibly offensive and ignorant. When you look at any large group of people there will be "bad apples." I am so embarrassed and ashamed that a fellow American would post this. It is just so very ignorant. To quote The Bible, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Why can you not love the people of the Muslim faith who have nothing to do with the extremists? You simply cannot lump that many people into one single category. Your type of thinking just leads to more hatred. This mentality cannot be embodied by the American people, nor any people.
ReplyDeleteWell, I cannot answer you directly, as you didn't have the courage to post your name or email address, but I posted your comment, though since it's on a post 12 days old, I suppose few will see it. This is as well, because it displays incredible ignorance on your part. No where does my post say that I believe we should have exterminated all Germans because of the Nazis, nor that we should exterminate all Muslims, including Muslim friends of mine, because of the brutal, Nazi like actions of the extremists. But I may be a bad Christian, for I cannot love the Nazis who exterminated millions of innocent people, nor can I love the Jihadists like ISIS who are murdering people for not adhering strictly to their own interpretation of Islam. I'm embarrassed for you, that your logic is so weak that you think because I hate the Nazis you love, I hate all Germans (or other ethnicities that contributed their share of Nazis) or that because I cannot love people who burn others alive I must hate everyone who shares some part of their belief system.
