For your weekend reading

Some items of interest for your weekend reading. I’ll be offline for time with the granddaughter. ~Bob

Updated: A Reading List for the Educated Voter (And those who wish to be)
Feel free to copy from the blog and share

Reader Comment on The Coming Collapse of the American Republic
Finally made it through your book. It is sobering. I got a draft card in 72 but never served, so I'm a little younger than you. I sure wish you and I were that young now, as Darwinism rapidly approaches to balance all budgets and surpluses. I believe we will see that day in our lives. I'm not a bugger, but bought 60 acres in NH on a trout river for when/if things head backward. Always had feeling your writings gave me in the back of my mind. I went over to China for a while as a software consultant with a buddy of mine and about the third week we were there, I looked over to him and said "I see the fall of Rome, Dave." - Mike

Precedent Hillary Clinton. By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: Hillary Clinton was, willfully, party to connivance. She lied. And anything other than the blunt truth saying she lied denies the forceful metaphorical punch to the face necessary to awaken America.

NSA broke privacy rules thousands of times per year, audit finds
Phony scandal. Now, if Bush was still president, it would be a story that never died. ~Bob.

The Price of Public Health Care Insurance in Canada
Excerpt: Canadians often misunderstand the true cost of their public health care system. This occurs partly because Canadians do not incur direct expenses for their use of health care and partly because Canadians cannot readily determine the value of their contribution to public health care insurance, say Nadeem Esmail and Milagros Palacios of the Fraser Institute. In 2013, the estimated average payment for public health care insurance will range from $3,387 to $11,381 for Canadian families, depending on the type of family. For the average Canadian family, between 2003 and 2013 the cost of public health care insurance increased more than 1.5 times faster than the cost of shelter and clothing, more than twice as fast as food, and nearly 1.5 times faster than average income. The 10 percent of Canadian families with the lowest incomes will pay an average of about $482 for public health care insurance in 2013. (Coming soon to a socialist utopia near you! ~Bob.)

Who pays the bill? Pensioners are pushing many cities and states towards financial crisis
Excerpt: DETROIT may be an extreme case of fiscal incontinence. But its bankruptcy highlights a long-term problem faced by many American cities and states; how to fund generous pension and health-care promises that are no longer affordable. The problem has been decades in the making. It has always been easier for politicians to promise generous retirement benefits to public servants than to raise their wages. The bill for jam today falls due immediately; the bill for jam tomorrow can be delayed for decades. (Coming soon, to a Democrat-run, public union infested city near you. ~Bob.)

Stop & frisk’s secret: It’s the guns that stay home. By John Podhoretz
Excerpt: Stop-and-frisk isn’t about “getting guns off the streets.” If that were what it was about, the seizure of 8,000 guns over 10 years, it would be a waste of the time spent by police officers who engage in the practice — an opportunity cost, given what else might have been done by the cops who were stopping-and-frisking. The tactic’s true purpose is deterrence. (I don’t wish ill to people, but I can’t say I wouldn’t feel a frisson of schadenfreude if the judge should be mugged by a thug with a gun, who he was bent on protecting from discrimination, since 95% of the gun violence in NYC is attributed to minorities. ~Bob.)

Barack the Lawgiver: Obama sees the Constitution’s separation of powers as a quaint anachronism. By Charles Krauthammer
Excerpt: Traditionally — meaning before Barack Obama — that’s how laws were changed: We have a problem, we hold hearings, we find some new arrangement, which is ratified by Congress and signed by the president.

Tom Price’s Plan to Replace Obamacare: He has thrice proposed a comprehensive alternative, but few have noticed. By Andrew Stiles
Excerpt: Either way, the notion that Republicans have no plan to replace Obamacare is news to Representative Tom Price (R., Ga.), who in June introduced a comprehensive alternative health-care plan — for the third time since 2009. It was originally introduced as the Obamacare alternative from the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), which Price chaired at the time.

Women in Combat
Comment from a Navy Vet: “Since the service academies are already co-ed, start the experiment there. The Army football team shall be co-ed, the Navy team remain all male. Let the games begin.”

Excerpt: Okay, two Obamacare reports came out this week that have me totally nonplussed. I'm going to need to have a Democrat explain them both to me because, as they stand, they seem to be clear proof that Obama indeed hates American citizens, loves illegal Mexicans, and seems to have opened a new front on the war against American citizens.

What is white condescension?
Comment: White condescension is the assumption that black people must be treated with deference. It is this ridiculous belief that I am entitled to special treatment. It leads to things like Affirmative Action; the white liberal way of saying blacks can’t compete. I dislike it when white liberals; still living in the 60's feel this need to treat me with kid gloves because of my skin color. I hate it when people think I must be handled carefully. Yes, some of my ancestors were slaves, but that does not entitle me to preferential treatment. What I want is to be treated like a human being; i.e. allowed to fulfill by God given potential. Don't exclude me because of my color, but don't treat me like I am special.

I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress. -- Frederick Douglas

Egypt’s key player: Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is thought to have been heavily involved in President Morsi’s ouster, partly due to its rivalry with the Muslim Brotherhood’s key financier, Qatar, for regional influence in the Gulf. While the Muslim Brotherhood could have certainly profited from a major gain of sympathy from both the Egyptian street and the international community, the fact that they engaged in violence – attacking three Coptic churches — killed their credibility. Also placing women and children at the front of the protests, as potential human shields, was not really a major public relations coup. (Should have heard the “reporter” on Wall Street program on radio (?) around 5 AM Fri trying to blame the “entrenched military regime” of 30-plus years for attacking churches, women and children and then driving the MB “out of control.” It was shocking to hear the arguments for the MB, for terrorists, jihadists that strive take away the fundamental freedoms we have taken for granted and apparently no longer value. Felt like Alice, having tumbled down the rabbit hole…topsy turvy world. –Barb)

US credibility 'in tatters' over Egypt crisis
Excerpt: On the streets of Cairo it's not just a fledgling democracy that lies in ruin. US policy too is in tatters - in the eyes of many - or at least America's reputation and credibility.

"There has been more persecution of Christians in Egypt the last year under Morsi than there has been in the last 30 years"

I note that the Muslim Brotherhood called today a "Day of Rage," and not, for example, a "Day of Dialogue"

Iranian Politician Deemed Too Pretty to Hold Office
We could trade them Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi for her and let her run her. Maybe both. ~Bob. Let the Taliban have a go at her. They'll ugly her up. – LLW

Muslims Plan September 11 Victory March to Washington D.C.
Excerpt: But thanks to liberals having reduced our education system to rubble, few know much about history, so placing a mosque at Ground Zero may not be a sharp enough stick in the eye to get the point across. A Million Muslim March scheduled to take on September 11 ought to do the trick.

On Reading the Book. By Baron Bodissey
Excerpt: A commenter at Gates of Vienna named QiPo has also read the book: I devoured each and every word of [Diana West's] “American Betrayal” during which I was compelled to put the book down so that I could catch my breath again and again! It is magnificent! For those who have read Chambers’ “Witness”, Posner’s “Why America Slept”, Pacepa’s “Disinformation”, Grimes and Vertefeuille’s “Circle of Treason”, or Evans and Romerstein’s “Stalin’s Secret Agents”, Ms. West’s book allows you to play connect the dots with world events in a way that clearly rips away the lies of the statist-progressives both in our past and for today. My years of intense historical studies since 9/11 were confirmed by her immaculate scholarship and well reasoned conclusions.

Black American citizens file “Articles of Impeachment” against Obama
Excerpt: We, black American citizens, in order to free ourselves and our fellow citizens from governmental tyranny, do herewith submit these Articles of Impeachment to Congress for the removal of President Barack H. Obama, aka, Barry Soetoro, from office for his attack on liberty and commission of egregious acts of despotism that constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. (Check out the full article including the charges. MM)

Reaping What Obama’s Sown in Egypt. By Matthew Vadum
Excerpt: President Obama continues to offer his blessings to the theocratic totalitarians of the Muslim Brotherhood as they spill blood on Egyptian streets in an effort to restore Mohamed Morsi to power.

What?! Piers Morgan Falsely Claims Virginia Had Highest Murder Rate In U.S. for 2009. By Matt Hadro
Excerpt: The FBI's 2009 Crime In the United States report placed Virginia behind 23 other states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico in the murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate per 100,000 inhabitants. And in case Morgan was referring to the firearm murder rate, Virginia still did not have the highest in the country.

Pew Poll: Americans think abortion is morally wrong by massive 3-to-1 margin.
Excerpt via LifeNews: However, Americans are still divided on the issue of embryonic stem cell research — even though it destroys human life and still has not helped any patients. Pew surveyed 4,006 adults nationwide from March 21 to April 8, 2013 and asked them about abortion, stem cell research and in-vitro fertilization.

'Axis of Evil' alive and well right off U.S. coast. By Humberto Fontova
Excerpt: Eusebio Penalver, Ignacio Cuesta Valle, Antonio Lopez Munoz, Ricardo Valdes Cancio, and many other Cuban blacks suffered almost thirty years in Castro's prisons. These men (and many women too, by the way, black and white) suffered their tortures 90 miles from U.S. shores. But you’ve never heard of them, right?

UK: Girls escape forced marriage by concealing spoons in their clothing to set off airport metal detectors. By Andy McSmith
Excerpt: The revelation follows a Government warning to teachers, doctors and airport staff to be alert to the problem that school age girls who are seemingly being taken abroad on holiday may actually be on their way to a life of enforced servitude. Forced marriages are particularly common during the summer holiday break, when there is a minimal chance of a child’s absence being noticed.

Rodeo clown who mocked Obama committed ‘hate crime,’ NAACP says
Excerpt: The rodeo clown at the Missouri state fair who donned a mask of President Obama and mocked about a bull running him over is guilty of a hate crime, the head of the state’s NAACP chapter said in a radio show late Thursday. (Any was it a hate crime when that was done to President George H. W. Bush? How about all the liberals with signs and tee shirts saying “Kill Bush.” Were those hate crimes? ~Bob.)

In 1930 black unemployment was lower than white unemployment. 1930 was the last year there was no Federal min wage.

PC term for a mugger: freelance socialist

#Quiz: Who torched 63 Coptic churches so far? A. Robert Spencer B. Peaceful Muslim Brotherhood protestors C. A deranged rodeo clown D. Bush

Excerpt: It’s not clear if there are any Muslims students in the third grade at Sunset Elementary School, or if pork offends them. At the same time, it’s also not clear if any third-graders at Sunset Elementary have an exotic pork allergy. Whatever the case, the original memo sent home to parents could not have been more clear, menacing or grammatically revolting. (Gee, for years Jewish kids have dealt with it….What you can’t eat or buy, what you can’t say, what you can’t laugh at. Pretty soon one will have to have a travel permit on where one can go or live—working on who can live where now by controlling funding to communities….what you can’t think…. Get into the education systems by bribing them with waivers, bend the minds young, have them report on their parents. What country is this? USSR? –Barb)

Philly Schools Borrowing Just to Keep the Lights On. By Walter Russell Mead
Excerpt: Philadelphia’s public school system is scraping the bottom of the barrel just to keep going. Only weeks before the beginning of the school year, the city has been forced to borrow $50 million to open the schools on schedule, and many critical programs will be put on hold. Worse, this comesafter Philadelphia closed about a tenth of its schools and laid off thousands of employees in an attempt to get its finances in line. The financial situation has become so bad that some schools have resorted to begging parents for tuition money.

Chubby Checker can sue HP over genital-measuring app, judge says
Suggest they rename it “The Carlos Danger App.”

Key Congressional Staffer Goes To Work For Student Debit Card Firm She Investigated
Business as usual. ~Bob

Israel is releasing a man who hacked a 90 year old Holocaust survivor to death w/ an axe in broad daylight in the name of "peace". They burned down 46 churches in Egypt today! FORTY SIX! And the media whines about the "peaceful" Muslim Brotherhood protestors.

Mesquite police need help ID’ing two men who pulled guns on Shell station clerk late Monday night
Excerpt: Two men, both black, walked into the Shell station at U.S. 80 near Interstate 635 carrying weapons. “One of the suspects was wearing a red hoodie and was armed with a pistol,” say police. “The second suspect was wearing a dark jacket over a white hoodie and was armed with a shotgun.” (Doubtless wearing hoodies to honor Trayvon. ~Bob.)

Soldier who charged at Ft. Hood gunman was shot 12 times before dying
No Purple Heart though, because, you know, just “workplace violence.” Allah Akbar! ~Bob

Excerpt: In the view of many Europeans, and in particular Scandinavians, not all victims of terror are alike. If, for example, you are an innocent Norwegian child who is gunned down by a deranged right-wing fanatic, you are deserving of compassion and your killer must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. However, if you are a Jew who is gunned down or bombed by a Palestinian, you had it coming and your killer should be released and honored.

In 1949, Muslim B'hood founder Hassan al-Banna was shot dead, likely by state security. Today, his grandson was, too
