Debt Ceiling Speech for Every Republican in Congress
The revised Obama speech every GOP Senator and Representative should give before voting against raising the debt ceiling: “The problem is, is that the way Obama has done it over the last four years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $10 trillion for the first 43 presidents – #44 added $6 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $16 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $52,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.”

Islamist militants reportedly holding 7 Americans hostage, among others, after taking control of Algerian gas field
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/01/16/islamist-militants-from-mali-reportedly-kidnap-8-foreigners-at-algerian-gas-1052027220/#ixzz2I9pxKrdw
Excerpt: Islamist militants from Mali have attacked and taken control of a natural gas field partly owned by BP in southern Algeria, killing two and reportedly taking 41 people hostage, including seven Americans. (I guess the Obama administration will leave these poor bastards to die like they did our folks in Benghazi. –LLW)

Lots on Gun Control Today:

Excerpt: President Obama on Wednesday formally proposed the most expansive gun-control policies in generations and initiated 23 separate executive actions aimed at curbing the nation’s gun violence. Obama signed executive orders and paperwork initiating immediate administrative actions, including steps to strengthen the existing background-check system to keep guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous people as well as to improve mental health and school safety programs. The president also called on Congress to swiftly pass legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines for civilian. (Nothing about asking Hollywood to stop glorifying violence in films and games? Oh, wait, they give money to Democrats. Nevermind. ~Bob.)

Worth Sharing: Assault Weapons
Good review of the facts. ~Bob
The Use and Abuse of Kiddie Human Shields. By Michelle Malkin
Excerpt: The president of the United States will release a binder full of new gun-control executive orders on Wednesday. Instead of standing alone, bearing full responsibility for the imperial actions he is about to take, President Obama will surround himself with an audience of kids who wrote to him after the Newtown, Conn., school massacre. This is the most cynical in Beltway theatrical staging — a feckless attempt to invoke “For the Children” immunity by hiding behind them. (When politicians say "it's the right thing to do," what they mean is they are about to do something that is either un-Constitutional or unpopular or both. Hiding behind kids to steal your rights is part of this slimy strategy. It started in Sandy Hook. --Don Hank. To be fair, many politicians use kids as props. See links. ~Bob. http://tiny.cc/o1l0qw and http://tiny.cc/k2l0qw)

At world’s largest gun show, few worries about tighter controls
Excerpt: The chief executive of another gun maker said he was disappointed by the debate in Washington. “Lawmakers should put their efforts into harsher penalties for straw purchasers, more prosecutions of violators of gun laws already on the books and more treatment and sharing of state information about the mentally ill,” the executive said in an interview in his hotel suite, where an armed guard was posted outside the door.

Why President Obama's gun plan may be doomed
Excerpt: Before President Barack Obama can even launch his campaign-style blitz for new gun control measures, there are strong indications that any comprehensive legislation restricting weapons and ammunition won’t even see a vote on the House floor.

At Least $4.5 Billion in New Spending for Gun Control
Excerpt: President Obama and Vice President Biden revealed their proposed reforms intended to reduce firearms related violence. The proposal contains a mix of executive actions, regulations, and calls for Congress to act legislatively. The total package will cost at least $4.5 billion in new spending.

NRA ad attacked for including President Obama's daughters
http://www.politico.com/story/2013/01/new-nra-ad-comes-under-attack-86268.html#ixzz2I9bKbCME
Excerpt: The National Rifle Association on Tuesday released a controversial new ad that makes reference to President Barack Obama’s daughters - sparking outrage from critics who charged the spot is over the line. The video calls Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for not embracing armed guards in schools even as his daughters enjoy armed protection at their schools. (When you don’t have a good answer to an obvious truth, feign outrage. ~Bob.)

Hoax: NRA spits on the graves of Newtown massacre victims with release of mobile shoot-'em-up app for iPhone, iPad
Excerpt: National Rifle Association launched free game that could allow children to play target practice and pay to unlock more powerful weapons, including an assault weapon like the one used by Adam Lanza to kill 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. (But how many readers will know this? See next piece. ~Bob.)

A Little NRA Mystery. By Bill Keller
Excerpt: This morning I blogged about a new target-shooting app – NRA: Target Practice – that has gotten a ton of media attention because it is advertised as being for ages 4 and up. I suggested that this was, even by NRA standards, so tasteless that it must be a hoax. … These and other indicators convinced Pierce that NRA: Target Practice is either a hoax aimed at embarrassing the NRA (not that the NRA needs much help) or, more likely, a publicity stunt by the developer of the app (which, to avoid rewarding the company, I will not name here.)

Price Counters President Obama’s Gun Speech
Excerpt: Congressman Tom Price, M.D. (GA-06) offered the following perspective after President Obama’s recommendations for executive action: … “We know that the safe use and responsible ownership of firearms has time and time again safeguarded individual and public safety. In fact, guns are used more often to protect lives, not take lives. Steps to remove firearms from the hands of law-abiding citizens endangers those very citizens.”

Excerpt: The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is reporting that they have records on 5,216,732 illegal or unlawful aliens. These records are kept under the “Prohibited Category Description” of those in the United States that are not allowed to purchase a firearm. (If it’s racist not to give them drivers’ licenses, it’s racist not to give them gun licenses. ~Bob.)

Gun control, Chicago style
Ya know, 22 dead in the first 11 days in Chi-town, says a lot about gun control, both about the guns, and who’s controlling them. –JW. (Yeah, I live here. Until I retire, then I’m gone. ~Bob.)

Thought for the Day
Your average law abiding American cannot be trusted with a semi automatic weapon with a large capacity magazine. Those weapons may, however, be safely entrusted to members of Mexican drug cartels who may be counted upon to handle them in a safe, responsible and law abiding manner. Having armed the Mexican drug cartels with the latest and greatest in firearms, maybe we should outsource school security to them. After all, they do fiercely defend their territory, and the heads of a couple wannabe mass murderers on spikes in the parking lot would surely be a deterrent. --TH

Freshman lawmaker threatens impeachment over gun rights

Excerpt: Freshman Republican Rep. Steve Stockman (Texas) on Monday said he would "seek to thwart" executive action by President Obama in regard to gun laws by any means necessary, even if it means "filing articles of impeachment." (Like with Bill Clinton, an impeachment effort would only help Obama at this point. ~Bob.)

Prog Canon (morning reading: Chicago rules)
Picture is worth seeing. ~Bob.

Excerpt: Obama is unwilling to trust Americans with an AR-15, but is willing to trust a genocidal terrorist group with Abrams tanks and F-16 jets. The F-16’s M61 Vulcan cannon can fire 6,000 rounds a minute and the 146 lb warhead of its HARM missiles can do a lot more than put a few dents in a brick wall.

A Massachusetts man is savagely beaten outside pizza shop in Greenwich Village
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/man-beaten-bat-tire-iron-village-article-1.1240933#ixzz2IB7W8n38
Excerpt: Kevin McCarron, 24, was bashed with a tire iron, baseball bat and blackjack and stomped repeatedly by a gang of toughs in the middle of MacDougal St. early Sunday, police and witnesses said. Cops on Monday busted 24-year-old Hatem Farsakh of Brooklyn, who was arraigned on charges of attempted murder and assault. (If we only save one life by banning tire irons and baseball bats, it’s worth it. ~Bob)

Gun Control Response
The following is what I sent to my Recon buddies: I don't usually weigh in on matters that we all might have disparate views on, but the sense of what I am getting from all this gun control frenzy and, up to now, subsequent gun laws is that the target and the control is being put on the shoulders of law-abiding gun owning citizens. Living in Chicago, I am fully aware of the gun violence that occurs here every day. But what the media and politicians fail to mention is that the violence is not conducted with assault type weapons. In 2011, there were 433 homicides in Chicago due to gun violence, and almost all were the result of handguns. In 2012, over 7,000 firearms were confiscated in Chicago and only 300 (4%) could be categorized as assault type weapons. While the politicians are riding the gun violence and assault weapon frenzy, I have seen or heard nothing that does anything to deal with the issue of the "bad" guys with guns. Everything so far has been to curtail the rights of the law abiding citizen. I believe greater attention should be paid to the perpetrators of violence and those that commit crimes against the laws already in place. Everyone's rights are in jeopardy right now. –GL

A Fast and Furious foreign policy
Excerpt: Let’s get this straight: Guns are too dangerous to be left in the hands of ordinary Americans. But guns in the hands of unknown rebels, who may turn out to be violent extremists, are just fine. …And send them to the most dangerous, unstable places in the world.

Excerpt: Gohmert, in his first extended floor remarks of the 113th Congress, broadly criticized the Obama administration for flouting the rule of law. …He also criticized Obama for saying he would not negotiate with Republicans on ways to reduce the deficit in the context of trying to increase the debt ceiling, and for saying these issues have never been linked before. But Gohmert said spending cuts and the debt ceiling have been linked several times, including in 2010, when Democrats were in charge of Congress.

Obama’s gun-violence executive orders and the Constitution
Excerpt: Of course we should all want our president focused on what works. We have more than enough dysfunctional and counter-productive federal policies in place, thanks to both Congress and the president. But there is one consideration that is even more important than whether an executive action will work to reduce gun-related violence: whether the president has the constitutional authority to implement it.

Obama: Doctors Should Ask About Guns in Homes
http://www.newsmax.com/Headline/obama-guns-healthcare-doctors/2013/01/16/id/471708?s=al&promo_code=11F75-1#ixzz2IAPKvqF5
Excerpt: You’re visiting your doctor because you have flu symptoms. After checking your heart, pulse and other vital signs, your doctor turns to you and asks, “By the way, the federal government has authorized me to ask you, What type and how many guns do you have in your home?" (“Me? Guns? Don’t be silly, doc, of course not!” will say every gun owner to this question. Bob.)

The Most Pro-Gun Low-Crime City in the United States. By Gary DeMar
http://godfatherpolitics.com/9000/the-most-pro-gun-low-crime-city-in-the-united-states/#ixzz2IAQPBLF4
Excerpt: I live just a few miles from the most pro-gun city in the United States – Kennesaw Georgia – where gun ownership is mandatory. … The city’s website states that Kennesaw “has the lowest crime rate in Cobb County,” one of the most populace counties in Georgia.

In fact, gun control has been proven to be more effective at reducing the number of red state Democrats than reducing gun violence.

Retired Cop Uses Gun To Stop Home Invasion
Excerpt: Edward Flynn and his girlfriend walked in on two men robbing his house in LaPorte, Michigan. His gun put an end to the robbery and saved their lives. (Progressives everywhere mourn their survival. ~Bob.)

Tweet from Me not You ‏@CyaCrazyCA: How much you wanna bet this homeowner is glad his state had no retarded limit on rounds.

Fundamentally Transforming America
http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/
Excerpt: Reader Kent Chitwood writes: “An unintended consequence of President Obama’s reelection is that within the last two months, I have bought a handgun and joined the NRA. Both are firsts for me and I am 47 years old. Based on the people I talk to, I am not alone.”

Please sign the petition to keep Obama and his family safe by making the White House a gun-free zone

Sorry haters, a kidnapping of the first kids would be a way bigger deal than the kidnapping of your kids. (Your kids are expendable, Insignificant One! ~Bob.)

Debt Hypocrisy Wins Obama Rare ‘Upside-Down Pinocchio’
Excerpt: Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post’s fact checker, used the occasion of the president’s “major-league flip-flop” to award the coveted “Upside-Down Pinocchio,” a ruling “rarely given” by Kessler. He also annotated the president’s 2006 speech decrying the debt ceiling’s increase.

Obama runs afoul of Dem base
President Obama has angered his base on a wide range of issues over the last month, even as he rides a political high after his victory over congressional Republicans in the fiscal-cliff fight. (And he cares because…? ~Bob.)

Excerpt: The problem with the Arrow critique of health care markets is that it implies that government intervention can make us all better off. But government faces the exact same asymmetry of information that you and I as patients face. And, as it turns out, government attempts to deal with the problem are demonstrably inferior to private sector alternatives.

10 Ways Dodd-Frank Will Hurt the Economy in 2013. By Hester Peirce
Excerpt: As Dodd-Frank comes to life, its harmful effects will come into plain view. Solutions crafted without a clear focus on the problems that need fixing can create new, even more severe consequences.

Most Arctic Species Will Benefit From Global Warming
Excerpt: Global warming will benefit most Arctic species, a team of scientists report in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS One. In fact, global warming will allow Arctic species to expand their range rather than be confined, says James Taylor in Forbes. Many global warming alarmists felt that Arctic and subarctic regions would be susceptible to climate change. However, warming will decrease the area of tundra and extend temperate climates further north. Scientists modeled the effect of global warming in European high latitudes and found: Many Arctic and subarctic species (43 of 61) benefited because they were able to expand their range. In fact, climate change up to 2080 will favor most mammals in subarctic Europe. Some species, such as alpine species, which are cold-climate specialists, may not benefit from the warming. However, no species is threatened to go extinct.

Excerpt: All across America, families are balancing their budgets and even paying off debt. Since the financial panic of 2008, personal debt has fallen as Americans tighten their belts and pay back loans. Some, unfortunately, had to declare bankruptcy because their debts got too big. Washington cannot declare bankruptcy; it must instead follow the example of millions of Americans and cut spending to live within its means.

Eagan lawyer suspended after affair with client
Excerpt: An Eagan lawyer is suspended indefinitely after having an affair with a client whom he represented in a divorce, then billing her for time they spent having sex. … In addition to a few previous citations for issues of decorum, Lowe was placed on probation in 1997 for using cocaine and being involved in purchasing the drug from a client. (Suspended!? What, exactly, does a lawyer need to do to be disbarred? –Daily Caller.)

Outlandish college courses: The Dirty Dozen for private (non-Ivy League) schools. By Kate L. Edwards
http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/16/outlandish-college-courses-the-dirty-dozen-for-private-non-ivy-league-schools/#ixzz2I9UMVNpC
We are so doomed. ~Bob. Excerpt: For many of the same reasons, though, private schools seem to have an easier time indoctrinating students. Agendas vary quite a bit, of course.

Facing the French, Mali Rebels Dig In and Blend In
Excerpt: In the face of fierce, all-night bombardment by the French military, Mali’s Islamist insurgents have hunkered down to fight again.

France in 'direct combat' in Mali within hours
Excerpt: French troops pressed northward in Mali toward territory occupied by radical Islamists on Wednesday, military officials said, announcing the start of a land assault that will put soldiers in direct combat "within hours."

Excerpt: Shabaab, al Qaeda's affiliate in Somalia and East Africa, announced today that it executed a French intelligence operative who was captured in Mogadishu in 2009. The hostage, Denis Allex, was the subject of a failed rescue attempt last week by French commandos.

Welfare Increases Poverty Instead Of Ending It
Excerpt: How did we get here? In Obama-esque fashion, of course. The committee says the unimaginable spending is in part "driven by a series of controversial recruitment methods that include aggressive outreach to those who say they do not need financial assistance." "Recruitment workers are even instructed on how to 'overcome the word "no"' when individuals resist enrollment," says committee research. (The point isn’t to end poverty or help the poor. The point is to make them dependent on government, thus voting Democrat to keep the cash flowing. ~Bob.)

Our last line of defense. By Alfonso Santillan
Excerpt: Our government is cutting our defense budget, reducing the size of our Armed Forces, reducing our long-range nuclear missile capabilities, and I am almost positive that the next step for this administration will be to eliminate as many as our other defense oriented programs as may be necessary to fund the numerous social and entitlement programs that the Obama administration will demand to not only fund, but to ever increase the funding for, through the numerous taxation plans he has put in place, and the other ones that will be coming up shortly.

Excerpt: Barack Obama’s Jan. 14 press conference included many attacks and much self-praise and numerous contradictory charges — few of which were recognized or highlighted by the reporters that presented the event in terms vary favorable to the president….Peter Wehner, a former White House adviser now at the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center, said Obama’s comments about hungry kids is slander. …“This is a variation of what psychiatrists refer to as projection,” Wehner added.

African-American Student Starts Pro-Israel Group in New Orleans
Excerpt: There hasn’t been a lot of good news recently for pro-Israel watchers of campus culture, but in the unlikeliest of places, by the unlikeliest of Zionists, there is finally good news to share. (She deserves, and doubtless needs, support. ~Bob.)

Land of The Freebies, Home of the Enslaved

Worth Reading: Why Expansionist Central States Inevitably Implode
Excerpt: As the State expands its share and control of the economy, this political allocation of capital and national income also expands. As the State grabs an ever-larger share of the economy and extends its Central Planning to every layer of the economy, the "best game in town" inevitably becomes lobbying the State for funds and perquisites. (Western and Western-allied nations have huddled together for protection against the consequences of their own reckless actions. Thus the US has stocked up on EU and European sovereign bonds, while EU countries have done likewise with Federal Reserve issues. One such reckless sovereign debt purchases led to the bankruptcy of MF Global. Now in severe thunderstorms, cows out in the pasture also tend to huddle together. But this huddling, a product of the herding instinct, does not add any sheltering effect, satisfying only an emotional need. In fact, whole herds of cows have been wiped out when they huddled at the bottom of silos that were subsequently struck by lightning--an instantaneous mass electrocution that destroyed the entire herd. If the article linked to above can be trusted, we -- the US, Europe, Japan and our bond holders -- are among those cattle awaiting a sizzling jolt from out of the blue. --Don Hank)

Hagel vs. too-big-to-fail Defense Department: Obamacare at home leads inevitably to Obamacuts abroad. By Mark Steyn
Excerpt: "The Pentagon," he said a year ago, "needs to be pared down." Unlike current Secretary Leon Panetta, who's strongly opposed to the mandated "sequestration" cuts to the defense budget, Hagel thinks they're merely a good start. That's why Obama's offered him the gig.

Global-Warming Protesters Greeted By Freeze
Excerpt: Freezing weather with light snow flurries greeted about 200 climate activists gathered on the steps of the state Capitol noon Monday to demand the state Legislature get serious about climate change. The climate rally unfolded four hours after the highest predicted tide of 2013 in Budd Inlet. …The irony of Monday’s cold weather compared to a global climate that is heating due to a carbon dioxide buildup in the atmosphere was not lost on the crowd, or some of the speakers.

Navy Seal Commander Job Price remembered as Pottstown hero
Excerpt: But Price was never as resolute, never as strong-minded in confronting all challenges — and overcoming each and every one of them — as he was during his 19 years of service as a Navy SEAL. It was a highly decorated career that ended, tragically, with his death while supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan three days before Christmas. Commander Price, the son of Harry and Nancy Price of Pottstown, also leaves behind his wife, Stephanie, and 9-year-old daughter Jillian. (Makes one wonder…~Bob.)

Excerpt: The US Navy is investigating the death of a top SEAL officer in Afghanistan as an apparent suicide, CNN reported Sunday.

Zero emission synfuel from seawater
Excerpt: Two papers published last year described a new approach to zero emissions synfuel, looking at direct carbon dioxide extraction from seawater. The new insight in these papers is that CO2 is very soluble in seawater, where the concentration is about 140 times higher than in the atmosphere. This could make seawater extraction a lot cheaper than direct air capture. (The basic research behind this article was done by the US Navy and the Palo Alto Research Center. The Brave New Climate site is run by folks who see nuclear energy as the easiest, quickest way to avoid the evils of CAGW, but they also watch other new developments. It occurs to me that if Dr. Morgan’s cost figures are anywhere in the ballpark, this could also play a part in satisfying future energy needs on a purely economic basis. At 79 cents per liter, the fuel would cost close to $3 per gallon to produce. While higher than the cost to extract and refine oil, it’s far less expensive than most other alternative production methods. Also, we aren’t likely to run out of seawater any time soon. Ron P.)

Quotes from The Patriot Post
"Of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people, commencing demagogues and ending tyrants." --Alexander Hamilton

"We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was 'legal' and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was 'illegal.'" --Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)

'They Have Suspicions': Obama demonizes anyone who disagrees with him.
Excerpt: President Obama likes to talk about civility in politics, but then he has a particular personal talent for attributing to his political opponents only base motives and beliefs they don't come close to holding. Consult his Monday press conference for a classic of the genre.

Moody's now has negative outlook for all U.S. universities
Excerpt: Moody's Investors Service now has a negative outlook for the entire U.S. higher education sector, the rating agency said on Wednesday, citing "mounting fiscal pressure on all key university revenue sources." Since 2009, Moody's had had a stable outlook for market-leading, research-driven colleges and universities and a negative outlook for the rest of the higher education sector.

Op-Ed: The 100% Fatwa-Compliant Iranian EMP Nuclear Weapon
Excerpt: Practically, if Iran attacked Saudi and US forces in the Persian Gulf with an EMP nuclear weapon, Iran would have two easy military objectives: 1) occupying the Saudi Easternmost Shiite-majority provinces that hold 99% of all of Saudi Arabia’s oil which are all located within 100 kilometers of the western shore of the Persian Gulf, and 2) capturing 30,000 living US soldiers as POWs that are now defending the Persian Gulf who will have all their modern high-tech weapons and communications equipment electronically burnt to a crisp at H-Hour plus 3 nanoseconds.

Qatar promotes sending Arab force to Syria
Excerpt: This news follows rumors that Qatari Director of Intelligence Ahmed Bin Thani made a secret visit to Egypt last May, allegedly meeting with Muslim Brotherhood leader Muhammad Badie….One benefit that Doha has possibly gained from its aid is that Cairo has agreed to a Qatari demand for a rotation of the job of Arab League secretary-general – which has traditionally been held by Egypt, where the headquarters of the Arab League is located.

US plays down report that chemical weapons used in Syria
Excerpt: The United States on Tuesday poured cold water on a media report that chemical weapons had been used in the Syrian conflict, but reiterated that if the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad did resort to chemical weapons, it will be held accountable.

Muslims Demolish Church Building in Egypt
Excerpt: Hundreds of Muslims came out of mosques today with hammers and destroyed a social services building belonging to the Coptic Church while chanting Islamic slogans. Security forces arrived after the building was completely razed. The 100 square meters social services building in the village of Fanous, Tamia district in Fayoum province, 130 KM south west of Cairo, had all the necessary government permits; it had a reception hall on the first floor and a kindergarten on the second. But the Muslims insisted that it would become a church.

Excerpt: A Us judge has ruled that the Palestinian Authority has the right to cover up a memo linking it to a suicide bombing that killed two teen American citizens in Israel, The Post has learned. The document — accidentally handed over to lawyers suing the authority for $300 million on behalf of the teens’ parents — reveals a “close relationship” between the bomber and a captain in the Palestinian Authority security forces who planned the terror attack, court papers say.

Obama's Unprecedented Betrayals
Excerpt: Russian military intelligence (GRU) from the Kremlin said recently that US Secretary Hillary Clinton was injured, and US Navy Seal Commander Job W. Price was killed when their C-12 Huron transport aircraft crash landed in the Iranian city of Ahvaz near the Iraqi border. The State Department vehemently denies the story. (Hard to see how this story could be covered up, if true. Rate doubtful. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: A group of aggressive Muslim vigilantes in London is harassing non-Muslims for their dress, alcohol consumption, and other “non-Islamic” behavior in what it designates as Muslim areas of the city.

Save the crabs! By James Delingpole
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100198280/save-the-crabs/
Excerpt: Consider the case of Phtirus pubis which has just joined the list of one of the world's most threatened species. Its natural habitat is being destroyed by humans, purely for the sake of fashion. Species populations are declining across the world – all thanks to the pernicious habit, especially prevalent among its young female hosts, of auto deforestation. (I’m sure members of PETA are hard at work encouraging the development of new colonies. ~Bob.)

Southwestern Pa. hospital to stop baby deliveries
Excerpt: A southwestern Pennsylvania hospital will stop delivering babies after March 31 because its obstetricians are either leaving or refocusing their practices, and because hospital officials believe they can't afford it based on projected reimbursements under looming federal health care reforms.

You haven’t seen America ’til you’ve seen it from a subsidized train. By James Pethokoukis
Excerpt: If you’re losing millions every year selling cheeseburgers and sodas, the rest of your business probably isn’t a model of efficiency, either. Amtrak’s food and beverage cars have lost $833.8 million over the last decade, including $84.5 million in 2011. But that’s just the beginning of Amtrak’s troubles, notes AEI’s Daniel Hanson. A few financial facts about the rail service, which lost a total of $361 billion last year:

Whole Foods CEO: Obamacare Isn't Like Socialism, 'It's More Like Fascism'
http://www.businessinsider.com/whole-foods-ceo-on-obamacare-2013-1#ixzz2IAsxevqE
Excerpt: "Technically speaking, it's more like fascism. Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesn't own the means of production, but they do control it — and that's what's happening with our health care programs and these reforms."

Excerpt: Fox News Channel has signed former Congressman Dennis Kucinich as a paid contributor to FNC and Fox Business network. Kucinich, who was for years a liberal stalwart in the House of Representatives, will provide analysis and commentary across all of FNC and FBN’s programs, beginning with Thursday’s edition of “The O’Reilly Factor.” (Doubtless a diabolical Fox plot to expose the left as feeble minded morons. ~Bob.)

Bringing in the bullion: Germany to repatriate gold from US and France
Excerpt: Germany’s central bank is set to reclaim some of its vast gold reserves held in the US and France, a German daily reported. The move follows an audit criticizing Bundesbank for mismanagement, stating the funds had never been “verified physically.”

I enjoyed my time serving as a member of the 112th Congress.

Cities Slide Deeper into Pension Sinkhole. By Walter Russell Mead
Excerpt: Public pension funds in major American cities have fallen to an average funding level of 74 percent—well below the 80 percent considered safe, according to a Pew Center study released this week. As the money slowly drains from these funds, cities will be left with a stark choice: Cut promised pension benefits to public-sector workers, or cut vital services that the rest of the population relies on. (One of the factors I cite in The Coming Collapse of the American Republic.
From Obama down to the mayors, the Democrats are hoping only that they can kick the can far enough that the collapse happens on someone else’s watch. They have to know it’s coming. ~Bob.)
