Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 22, 2012

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 22, 2012
Robert A. Hall
Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Letter to the Chicago Tribune
Though I hold a world view entirely different from Clarence Page's, perhaps best explained in Dr. Thomas Sowell's brilliant book A Conflict of Visions, I've long been an admirer of the clarity of Page's writing and the power of his intellect. Now comes his column on "binders." Readers are left to decide if Page's intellect is so deficient that he was unable to understand that Romney was referring to "binders full of the resumes of women" or if Page has been reduced to the role of a polemist regurgitating Democrat talking points, however inane. Nothing better illustrates the paucity of seriousness in the Obama campaign than that, between meetings with his top foreign policy advisers on The View, the two major issues the President and his sycophants like Page are reduced to talking about are "binders" and Big Bird. Robert A. Hall.

Information on my books

Poll: Romney gaining ground in Ohio
Excerpt: President Obama's lead over GOP challenger Mitt Romney in Ohio narrowed to just one percentage point, tumbling from the five-percentage-point advantage Obama had a week ago, according to a Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey released Saturday. The poll found Obama now has a 49-to-48-percent advantage over Romney among likely voters in the battleground state.

Whoopi’s “Wicked Step-Sister” Act
Excerpt: Ann Romney appeared on “The View” on Thursday. One could argue that this decision exhibited a shocking lack of sense or, at the very least, taste by Mrs. Romney, but there is another possibility. Mrs. Romney was being smart…or at the very least, charitable.

How The Taliban Is Thwarting The War On Polio. By Jackie Northam
Excerpt: But the new campaign, like previous efforts, hasn't been able to overcome one critical problem: getting into parts of Pakistan's lawless tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan to vaccinate the children there.

Excerpt: Mr Brown told loved ones he still had a 'bullet' in his leg and asked his grandchildren not to sit on his knee because of the pain it caused. But when he died last week aged 94 his family had him cremated and were stunned when staff handed them back a big bag of shrapnel. The bag contained a whopping 6oz of bomb shrapnel that he had been carrying around for 60 years.

Libyan Ambassador Christopher Stevens Warned State Department About Security Problems on the Day He was Murdered. Daily Caller
http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/19/libyan-ambassador-christopher-stevens-warned-the-state-department-about-security-problems-the-day-he-was-murdered/#ixzz29mctIxNr
Excerpt: Across 166 pages of internal State Department documents — released Friday by a pair of Republican congressmen pressing the Obama administration for more answers on the Benghazi terrorist attack — slain U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and the security officers assigned to protect him repeatedly sounded alarms to their superiors in Washington about the intensifying lawlessness and violence in Eastern Libya, where Stevens ultimately died. On Sept. 11 — the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed — the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces.

MILLOY: EPA's illegal human experiments
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/18/epas-illegal-human-experiments/#ixzz29mfqNGe0
Excerpt:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been sued in federal court for allegedly conducting illegal experiments on human beings. The case tests whether a government agency can violate the law and the most sacrosanct ethics of scientific research — and get away scot-free. Based on thousands of pages of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, since 2004 and continuing through the Obama administration, the EPA intentionally has been exposing dozens, if not hundreds, of human subjects to extraordinarily high levels of air pollutants such as diesel exhaust and fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5.

Arab Women in the Middle East. By Khaled Abu Toameh
In Pakistan, a 14-year-old girl is shot by Muslim extremists for daring to call for education for women. In Tunisia, a young woman who was raped by three policemen is about to on trial for committing an "indecent act." Her crime: she was sitting with her fiancé in a car when the policemen surprised them and brutally raped her. Syrian refugee girls who fled the fighting in their country are being forced into marriages by Muslim men, who are exploiting the plight of their families to fulfill sexual fantasies. (If the Democrats cared so much about women, they would not be so cozy with the Muslim BROTHERhood. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

Excerpt: Even before his inauguration, Barack Obama was an imaginary man, the creation of his admirers. Think back to the 2008 Time magazine cover depicting him as FDR, the Newsweek cover of the same year on which he was shown casting Lincoln’s shadow, or the $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”—this in 2009, less than a year after he had taken office.

The Ghosts of WWII

The Obama you don't know
Excerpt: Above all, as America's first black chief executive, Obama symbolized the healing of long-festering wounds that were the terrible national legacy of slavery, the Reconstruction Era and Jim Crow. We would be, finally, one nation. But after nearly four years in office, Obama has become a sharply polarizing figure.

Worth Reading: A tweet too far? By John Butle
Excerpt: Ah, so the data were ‘puzzling’ and ‘incredible’—not believable. So perhaps the only way to reconcile the two excerpts above is to draw the conclusion that, while the AEI apparently knows that the data were not deliberately manipulated, they are, sadly, some combination of inaccurate and unreliable rubbish. Am I being too harsh? Well, much US labour market data are not particularly ‘hard’ but based on surveys, estimates and models rather than on real numbers

Worth Reading: 55 Facts About The Debt And U.S. Government Finances That Every American Voter Should Know
Excerpt: he future of the United States of America is being systematically destroyed by our politicians, but unfortunately most Americans don't really grasp exactly what is happening. 30 years ago, our national debt had just crossed the one trillion dollar mark. Just recently, it crossed the 16 trillion dollar mark. Prior to every election, politicians from both parties swear up and down that they will do something about our exploding debt, but it never happens.

The End of the American President. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: The American presidency came to an end on October 15, 1992 during a Town Hall debate between Bush I, Ross Perot and Bill Clinton. The stage of the Town Hall seemed more like a place for Phil Donahue or Sally Jesse Raphael to strut around, biting their lips, and dragging out tawdry tales for audience applause, than for three presidential candidates to discuss the future of the country.

Worth Reading: Benghazi just tip of O’s terror problem. By Michael Widlanski
Excerpt: The real issue isn’t whether President Obama used the word “terror” the day after the Benghazi terror attack, but whether Obama truly comprehends the Islamist terror threat to America and the West. It’s not simply that Obama and his team spent so many days denying the obvious — that the Benghazi assault was a long-planned operation by an al Qaeda offshoot — or even that the administration reduced security on the ground in Libya, despite local pleas to increase it. It’s that the Obama team is still in denial about the resurgence of the threat, which by my count has produced more terror attacks in the United States in the last three years (though fortunately nothing on the scale of 9/11) than in the previous eight.

2012 Marine Corps Birthday Video Message
From the Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

The Benghazi Attack: Foreign Intelligence 101, or Who Knew What When. By Dr. Jim Giermanski
Excerpt: The recent events in Benghazi, Libya and the Obama administration’s response to them have done more to clutter reality than clear it up. I think it’s time to explain first how all this intelligence gathering and its transmission back to the United States works. I have personally been involved at the managerial level in foreign intelligence acquisition and the testing of intelligence sources, and have personally written a specific Middle East collection requirement for a Department of Defense agency.

Excerpt: Home Depot Founder Bernie Marcus shares his concerns for our nation and how frightened he is by what Pres. Obama's policies mean for America, especially for our children and future generations.

Worth Reading: Man Bites Dog, 2012: When mainstream journalists commit actual journalism. By Harry Stein
Excerpt: I recently attended the Walter Duranty Awards for Journalistic Mendacity, a highly entertaining event aimed at calling attention to the past year’s most egregious instances of mainstream-media bias. Sponsored jointly by The New Criterion and Pajamas Media, the awards are named after the most notoriously corrupt journalist of all time: the New York Times Moscow correspondent, Soviet apologist, and 1932 Pulitzer winner who pushed the Stalinist line that reports of the great famine in the Ukraine—brought on by forced collectivization and causing an estimated 6 million deaths—were nothing more than “malignant propaganda.”

Excerpt: The US killed al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's senior Sharia, or Islamic Law, official in a drone strike in early October, according to a Yemeni journalist who is closely connected to the terror group. Sheikh Abu Zubeir 'Adil al'Abab, the Sharia official, was described at AQAP's fourth most important leader.

Obama’s Cabinet Members Violating Federal Election Law and No One Cares
http://godfatherpolitics.com/7615/obamas-cabinet-members-violating-federal-election-law-and-no-one-cares/
Excerpt: In 1939, the Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities was passed by Congress and became federal law. The act prohibits federal employees from being involved or holding membership in any political organization which advocates the overthrow of the constitutional form of government. (Say, isn’t that what the Democratic Party has been doing with the help of Barack Obama and Eric Holder?)

Retired Army General Franks backs Romney
Excerpt: “We only got two choices,” Franks said Saturday during a telephone interview from Green Bay, where he addressed the Big 10 VFW Conference. “We can stay with what we’ve got or we can make a change … When you find yourself in a hole stop digging.” Franks is among more than 300 retired officers who comprise Romney’s “military advisory council.”

ACORN Whistleblower Anita Moncrief, Ex-Liberal: "They are very evil....they've attacked our culture...and basically over-sexualized our kids."
Excerpt: A writer, blogger, activist and mom, Moncrief is affiliated with True the Vote and has been disowned by some of her own family for her newfound beliefs. The Daily Caller’s Ginni Thomas recently spoke with Moncrief about the efforts by the left to divide America along race, class and gender, why the left wants to grow government dependency and the price' v:shapes="_x0000_i1025">  she has paid for changing her worldview.

Workers at Chevy Volt battery plant built with federal money paid to do nothing for months
Excerpt: Now a new report says in one Michigan plant, built with $151 million in federal money to assemble battery cells for the Chevrolet Volt, workers have been paid for months to do nothing. According to WOOD-TV of Grand Rapids, Mich., the 300 workers at the LG Chem plant in nearby Holland have yet to ship a single production battery cell since the plant opened late last year. (Your tax dollars at...well, I guess "work" is the wrong word. ~Bob.)

Phoenix arrest demonstrates cartels' control in Arizona
Excerpt: On Thursday, police in Phoenix arrested Carlos Noe Flores, 35, after he reportedly shot another drug trafficker. 9you can't say that shooting drug dealers is a job Americans won't do. I'm perfectly willing.... ~Bob.)

Excerpt: Mitt Romney is never going to be as smooth an orator as The Anointed One. He is not nearly as articulate. So, when Mitt Romney tried to illustrate his immense respect for the abilities of women by recounting how he achieved a majority of women on his Governor's staff, he related that, after demanding more women candidates, he was given "binders full of women". Yes, Governor Romney should have said, aided by women's groups, he was supplied with more resumes for women for his staff. Well, desperate to find some faux pas, the liberals and the liberal media jumped all over Romney's statement.

Ahead of Election, Obama Stops Releasing ‘Stimulus’ Reports
Excerpt: The $831,000,000,000 economic “stimulus” that President Obama spearheaded and signed into law requires his administration to release quarterly reports on its effects. But "the most transparent administration in the history of our country" is now four reports behind schedule and has so far not released any reports whatsoever in 2012. Its most recent quarterly report is for the quarter than ended on June 30, 2011. (Probably bogged down with too many "legitimate" issues. Besides, he's the president. The law doesn't apply to him. --MasterGuns)

Playboy Shoot Absent From Candidate's Resume: State legislative challenger describes herself as Sunday school teacher. By Bob Unruh
Excerpt: A race for a state legislative seat in Washington state is turning white-hot with a report today that the Democrat challenger who describes herself as a Sunday school teacher appeared as a model in Playboy magazine. (Well, she showed more "transparency" than Obama, ~Bob.)

The real jobs numbers: 41% of America unemployed, 1 in 3 doesn't want work at all
Excerpt: Even if the US Labor Department has determined that the unemployment level has finally plateaued after months of staggering jobs statistics, the truth behind the numbers isn’t all that nice. Only four out of every 10 adults in the US is employed. While the percentage of Americans filing jobless benefit claims isn’t what it was during an unemployment epidemic that ravaged the country throughout the majority of US President Barack Obama’s administration, the Labor Department’s numbers are largely inflated on account of how they determine what actually constitutes looking for work.

Benghazi attack: CIA reported 'within 24 hours' Islamist militants to blame
Excerpt: Barack Obama was under renewed pressure over his handling of the fatal attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi last night, after CIA sources said they had reported "within 24 hours" that the assault was carried out by Islamist militants.

Jihad Watch cartoon: Muslim enraged by Swiss flag

Worth Sharing: Absolutely Uncertain
Excerpt: A new, 18-minute mini-documentary follows the journey of Irina, a 23-year-old liberal, Jewish New Yorker who voted for Obama in 2008. Yet as her connection to Israel has grown, and she has learned more about the President's policies across the Middle East and towards Israel in particular, Irina has come to realize that "when the chips are down," the President may not "have Israel's back" as he says.

Former Senator George McGovern, '72 Democratic presidential nominee, dies at 90
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/10/21/former-presidential-nominee-george-mcgovern-dies-at-0/#ixzz29wvuKotb
Reported at the time, he bought a small country inn in Connecticut, which failed, and complained loudly about all the government regulations--passed by liberals like him--which were putting him under. ~Bob.

Worth Reading: Arab Spring and the Israeli enemy. By Abdulateef Al-Mulhim
Thirty-nine years ago, on Oct. 6, 1973, the third major war between the Arabs and Israel broke out. The war lasted only 20 days. The two sides were engaged in two other major wars, in 1948 and 1967. The 1967 War lasted only six days

Worth Reading: The Real Debate: The 2012 election is about far more than our pocketbooks. By Yuval Levin
Excerpt: Simply put, to see our fundamental political divisions as a tug of war between the government and the individual is to accept the progressive premise that individuals and the state are all there is to society. The premise of conservatism has always been, on the contrary, that what matters most about society happens in the space between those two, and that creating, sustaining, and protecting that space is a prime purpose of government. The real debate forced upon us by the Obama years—the underlying disagreement to which the two parties are drawn despite themselves—is in fact about the nature of that intermediate space, and of the mediating institutions that occupy it: the family, civil society, and the private economy.

Jerusalem Will Be Regained Only Through Jihad, Not Through Negotiations: Muslim Brotherhood General Guide Muhammad Badi'
Excerpt: In his October 11, 2012 Friday sermon, posted on the website of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), the movement's General Guide, Muhammad Badi', focused on the topic of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He stated that the Muslims, rather than the Jews or Christians, are the sons of Abraham, and that "the world will not know happiness, security and stability until it is under the guardianship of Islamic shari'a." He went on to say that the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is just as valuable to the Muslims as the Ka'ba in Mecca, and that Jerusalem is Muslim land. (This is the viewpoint, if not the policy of the new Egyptian government. This is the policy of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan and the unstated desire of the Palestinian Authority, the parliament of Jordan and the likely rulers of Syria--to mention a few. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

What Do the Jews Have to Do? By Aaron Goldstein
Excerpt: I will also remember them because the Lebanese judo team refused to train in the same room with their Israeli counterparts. Olympic officials, who would not be moved to hold a moment’s silence for athletes, moved heaven and earth to aid and abet anti-Semitism by placing a screen in the room so the Lebanese team would not be blinded by gazing at the Jews. As Mark Steyn noted it was a case of “taking the Jew out of judo.” When someone says they don't love you, that in fact they hate you and yearn for your destruction, it makes sense to take them seriously. To expect that rejection of a century of goodwill concessions and gestures will suddenly turn positive or at least benign is the exemplar of wishful thinking. Such wishful thinking is tantamount to a death wish. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

Iran Becomes a Nuclear Threshold State. By A. Savyon and Y. Carmon
Excerpt: The U.S. administration gradually reversed its policy regarding uranium enrichment. Under the new policy, the right to use enriched uranium was reinterpreted as countries' right to enrich uranium on their own soil, as long as it was for civilian/peaceful purposes. (The Obama administration is reportedly considering accepting an Iranian offer to negotiate one on one following the election. Will Obama accept the red herring to demonstrate the "wisdom" of his incremental and incomplete sanctions approach to an electorate made jumpy by Benghazi? Or will he summarily reject the gambit, thereby demonstrating his macho? I can see the mullahs smirking. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

Obama's Last Stand. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Democrats do not have a great track record in the White House. The number of Democratic presidents who have won second terms is small and becomes much smaller with the second half of the 20th Century. Unlike Congressional shifts which reflect regional politics more than a national referendum, the Presidency is a referendum on the usages of the nearly unlimited power of its holder. The Democratic strategy has been to substitute iconography for competence and their iconic presidents have invariably been men of dubious character.

What's behind Obama's 'disdain' for Romney? By Michael Goodwin
Excerpt: “There was a baseline of respect for John McCain. The president always thought he was an honorable man and a war hero,” an Obama adviser told Thrush. “That doesn’t hold true for Romney. He was no goddamned war hero.” So Obama looks down on Romney because Mitt was never captured by the enemy and tortured? That’s weird, given that Obama himself never served in the military, though he did famously complain that working in a private business was like being “behind enemy lines.” I guess you had to be there to appreciate his pain.

Twitter Gives Saudi Arabia a Revolution of Its Own
Excerpt: Saudi Arabia did not have an Arab Spring. But it has had a revolution of sorts.
Open criticism of this country’s royal family, once unheard-of, has become commonplace in recent months. Prominent judges and lawyers issue fierce public broadsides about large-scale government corruption and social neglect. Women deride the clerics who limit their freedoms. Even the king has come under attack. All this dissent is taking place on the same forum: Twitter.

My Only Disappointment in the President. By Jack Dunphy
Excerpt: But there is one crisis – and it is a genuine crisis – that Mr. Obama was uniquely situated to address yet has failed to do so. I refer to the horrific level of inner-city crime in America, the root cause of which is the appalling number of children whose fathers are little more than sperm donors. It is considered crass to discuss such things but facts are facts, and the fact is that no ethnic group in America has a higher rate of illegitimate births than do blacks, at 72.5 percent.

Excerpt: A powerful car bomb exploded in Lebanon's capital of Beirut on Oct. 19, killing at least eight people and wounding 80. It was the largest bombing in the country since 2008. The blast occurred in a predominantly Christian section of central Beirut, 200 yards from the headquarters of the Phalange, a Christian party that is an outspoken critic of the Syrian regime.

Excerpt: Constitutionally protected speech can never be legitimized as a cause of violence…..The administration has attempted to walk a disgraceful line on this. First, it has worked closely with Islamist governments for four years, endeavoring to carve out of the First Amendment’s carapace the protection of speech that criticizes Islam. Clearly aware that this is a rogue effort, Obama and his minions further suggest that the Constitution limits only what laws government may enact, not any extra-legal methods – what Secretary of State Clinton euphemistically calls “shaming” — by which government pursues ends the Constitution forbids.

Obama campaign borrows $15 million from Bank of America
Excerpt: Obama For America took out a $15 million loan from Bank of America last month, according to the campaign’s October monthly FEC report. The loan was incurred on September 4 and is due November 14, eight days after the election. OFA received an interest rate of 2.5% plus the current Libor rate….Last month, two weeks after OFA took out the loan, Bank of America announced a plan that would lay off 16,000 workers by the end of the year.

Obama campaign accepted UK donation. By Neil Munro
Excerpt: “Chris Walker, a British citizen who lives outside London, told The Post he was able to make two $5 donations to President Obama’s campaign this month through its Web site while a similar attempt to give Mitt Romney cash was rejected,” the NY Post reported.... “For a campaign that is very sophisticated in its fund-raising capabilities, they do not make one effort to try to even see or ask somebody to check a box that says they are a US citizen,” Peter Schweizer, the institute’s president, told the NY Post. In May, The Daily Caller reported several instances of what appears to be criminal fraud in Obama’s online donations system. (We have to win by 5% to offset fraud. ~Bob.)

Worth Sharing: Bow to Nobody

Eulogies for Cops. By Steve Willard
Excerpt: The 141-year-old Camden, New Jersey Police Department is no more. Last year layoffs left 50 percent of the sworn members out of work. Then, in August 2012, came official word that the department was being disbanded. It’s not that they aren’t needed. Camden is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. The death knell came from, among other things, a hostile governor/legislature and a municipal population that has more tax takers than taxpayers. A non-union, experimental county-wide policing program, will take its place. How it will all work out remains to be seen. In the meantime, RIP to the CPD.

Muslim Brotherhood Behind Benghazi Attack With Link To Obama. By Kris Zane
Excerpt: On September 10, 2012, the amateurish, anti-Muslim YouTube video “Innocence of Muslims” had been on the Internet for three months with exactly seventeen views. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, UN Ambassador Susan Rice, and an army of Obama surrogates conducted a media blitz blaming this obscure video no one had seen for the entire Middle East exploding on 9/11, including a “protest turned violent” at the Libyan consulate that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. We later learned that there was no protest.

Romney For President Announces Military Advisory Council
Excerpt: Today, Romney for President announced its Military Advisory Council. (Impressive list. ~Bob.)

Beware the Chinese Sea-Dragon. By Alex Ward
Excerpt: Recently, Chinese assertiveness was brought to the fore by its sparring with Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea. In early September a conflagration of anti-Japanese protests and boycotts engulfed China after the Japanese government attempted to buy ownership of the disputed atolls from a Japanese businessman. The Chinese government responded forcibly, sending roughly 1,000 fishing vessels to the area, flanked by six frigates and several surveillance units. (Our naval fleet size is not capable of standing the world-wide demands we see before us today. Some say the fleet size is what is was in WWI. That is not true. However, we did not have the demands that are currently projected for a credible world situation today. We need to ramped up the fleet for a stand-off capability. We also need to bring the Air Force up to a more sizable force which will allow for further [enhanced] stand-off capability. A land war scenario in Asia can only fail. Leverage our technical advantage. Infantry is a (very) last resort in that AO—just as it would be impossible for an Asian force to attack the continental U.S.. Strategic suppression of resources will be a more effective approach to incapacitating one another—which is not (I believe) our default position. --Greg, USMC, Ret.)

Good cartoon.

The Failure of the American Jewish Left. By David Brog
Excerpt: In early September 2012, many in the pro-Israel camp were disturbed by a series of events at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. First, the committee drafting the party platform eliminated traditional language recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Next, the party elders chose to restore the language and called for a pro forma voice vote from the delegates in support of this amendment. Instead, what looked and sounded like an angry majority of the delegates voted against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. This hostility should not have come as a surprise. (The polite Left, i.e. Liberals, in general refuse or are viscerally unable to identify the evil in an ideology propounded in "dialectial" literature. Mr. Brog makes the case that today's Jewish apologists for Palestinian irredentism and jihadism is the same kind of self-destructive foolishness of Wallace followers in the 1940s. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

  2. You are one thorough guy!

When you consider that optimal means:
    optimal |ˈäptəməl| adjective
best or most favorable; optimum: seeking the optimal solution.

    Obama is NOT optimal!

Also, Binders and Big Bird may suggest that Obama's recent spillages may have been brought to us by the Letter B.
