Political Digest for May 14, 2012

The Old Jarhead Blog: Bringing you news and information the MSM is too busy covering American Idol, celebrity affairs and sensational missing person cases to cover. Please forward to friends who need to be informed.

I post articles because I think they are of interest. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article. Help your friends and relatives stay informed by passing the digest on. In some cases I post things sent to me by readers I might not have posted on my own, to get ideas circulating.

Weary warriors favor Obama
Excerpt: If the election were held today, Obama would win the veteran vote by as much as seven points over Romney, higher than his margin in the general population. (Hard for me to credit. Maybe I know the wrong vets. ~Bob.)

Nurse practitioners look to fill gap with expected spike in demand for health services
Excerpt: That has a battle heating up over who will provide that care. Nurse practitioners are rolling out a campaign this week to explain what, exactly, nurse practitioners do — and why patients should trust them with their medical needs.

Socialist president-elect owns 3 homes on Riviera
Excerpt: France's new Socialist president [-elect] owns three holiday homes in the glamorous Riviera resort of Cannes, it emerged today. The 57-year-old who "dislikes the rich" and wants to revolutionise his country with high taxes and an onslaught against bankers is in fact hugely wealthy himself. (Another rich, left-wing one percenter. ~Bob.)

Vulnerable Democratic senators balk at Obama's gay marriage endorsement
Senate Democrats facing difficult reelections are breaking with President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, a sign the issue is politically dangerous in battleground states. Sens. Jon Tester (Mont.) and Claire McCaskill (Mo.), the two most vulnerable Democratic senators, have declined to endorse Obama’s call for the legalization of gay marriage. Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Bob Casey (Pa.) and Bill Nelson (Fla.), Democrats who have easier races but in states that could become more competitive by November, have also backed away from Obama’s stance.

Facebook co-founder flees IRS for Singapore
Excerpt: In a move that will test your "Social Network" sympathy, shafted Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has decided to renounce his U.S. citizenship just before that vaunted Facebook IPO and save several yachts-ful (heck, planes, too) of money.

News from the Dark Side of the Laffer Curve
Excerpt: California's famously perfect weather and spectacular scenery have not been enough to save the state from an 11 percent unemployment rate, as officially measured, or gargantuan annual state budget deficits. Liberal Democrats control the levers of power in the state and pretty much all the cultural assumptions, but reality stubbornly refuses to give way to the promised utopia. Consider the lead article in this morning's San Jose Mercury News.

Worth Reading: Victor Davis Hanson: Change—and Some Hope
Excerpt: The Rasmussen Tracking Poll recently had Romney up 50 to 42 over Obama. At this early juncture, such polls mean nothing—except as diagnostic indices of why perhaps both candidates go up and down in popularity. So why has Barack Obama plunged in the polls these last few days? The Republican slugfest is over.

Obama makes speech in a couple's GARAGE... and even his hosts might not vote for him. By Nina Golgowski
Excerpt: In what could be a disastrous photo opportunity for the President's campaign, Mr Obama spoke to a handful of people in the crucial swing state. The president's 15 minute address outside the home of Paul and Val Keller on Friday afternoon, drew a small audience of neighbours and supporters - though even his hosts said they were not sure if they would vote for him in the coming election.

Tea Party’s effective use of Twitter aiding its makeover of GOP
Excerpt: As has been said on here before: If you’re not on Twitter, you need to be. Nowhere is this point made more readily apparent than the way in which the Tea Party has utilized social media outlets like Twitter, to begin to reshape the Republican Party from the inside out. After watching the Democrats’ sheer dominance over social media forums during the 2008 Presidential election, it is doubtful that anyone could have predicted the conservative base would supplant them so quickly.

Senior Afghan peace council member assassinated in Kabul
Excerpt: Arsala Rahmani, a senior member of the Afghan High Peace Council who had served as a deputy education minister during Taliban rule in Afghanistan, was shot and killed while driving in Kabul today. Imported killers: Illegal aliens in sanctuary cities commit murders
Excerpt: The residents of so-called sanctuary cities in California witnessed the trials of two illegal aliens who viciously murdered several victims in separate incidents, a law enforcement source in California told the Law Enforcement Examiner on Friday. In two unrelated cases that illustrate the high price communities pay for sanctuary policies, two illegal aliens -- both with extensive criminal records -- were convicted of first-degree murder by juries this week in different parts of a border state that's actually prided itself on protecting illegal aliens, according to a legal watchdog group that investigates and exposes government corruption and criminal activity perpetrated by government officials.

Arizona Ron Paul supporters boo Romney's son off stage
Excerpt: Supporters of Ron Paul booed the son of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney off the stage Saturday at the Arizona Republican Party convention as he sought to solidify support for his father's nomination. (From observing Ron Paul supporters, I conclude that: A. They are Obama's Little Helpers. B. They are very similar to Occupy Wall Street. C. They have no respect for anyone or anything other than their Cause. D. They should have a Party all their own--after all, Paul is really a Libertarian. --DH_

Paul supporters heckle terminally ill woman
A woman identifying herself as terminally ill was heckled by Ron Paul supporters at today’s Arizona Republican Convention. As she told the crowd that she only had a short time to live, and asked Republicans to unify behind Mitt Romney, Ron Paul supporters responded “WHY”. ... After his demand was rejected, and the lights were being turned out, Paul supporters began throwing chairs. They then went out to the parking lot and began jumping on cars.

Judge affirms damages to illegal immigrants: Lawsuit accuses rancher of abuse in 2004
Excerpt: Not even a 2011 Arizona law written just for him could help Roger Barnett. The Arizona rancher this week lost another court ruling in a years-long lawsuit over allegations he assaulted illegal immigrants caught on his land in 2004. "We hope this will be the final chapter in Barnett's attempts to avoid paying his victims the judgment that is long overdue," David Hinojosa, an attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said in a news release.

Chameleon Nation
Excerpt: Identities, in psychodramatic fashion, are sometimes put on and taken off, like clothes, as self-interest dictates -- given that so often they are no longer ascertainable from appearance. If that sounds crass or unfair, ask Elizabeth Warren, who dropped her Native American claims as soon as she at last received tenure and found her 1/32 con suddenly superfluous -- to the apparent unconcern of her similarly cynical but now mum employer, Harvard.

Marine pilot earns honor for heroic Libya rescue---I'm sure you saw this on the news right?
Excerpt: Maj. J. Eric Grunke, pictured here April 24 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., has been named Marine Corps Aviator of the Year by the Marine Corps Aviation Association. I'm sure you heard about this in the news right? What? It wasn't on your local news channel? You mean they didn't report about our heroes in WAR doing brave heroic feats? What are they reporting on then???

Minneapolis: Hundreds of Muslims and Leftists march and block traffic to protest bank's refusal to deal with money transfer shops that funded jihad terror

Jewish protesters ejected from civil demonstration at UN ambassador’s speech
Excerpt: A few dozen protesters attended the speech, silently waving small Jewish flags before walking out, or in some cases, being escorted out by law enforcement. The protesters argue not only that President Obama has not helped U.S. relations with Israel, they accuse him of hating the Jewish nation.

Strassel: Trolling for Dirt on the President's List
Excerpt: First a Romney supporter was named on an Obama campaign website. That was followed by the slimy trolling into a citizen's private life. Here's what happens when the president of the United States publicly targets a private citizen for the crime of supporting his opponent. (Let's see, how many times did the media catch Pres Bush going after individuals by name because they gave money to his opponents? Ah... that would be ZERO. And you know they would have roasted him in headlines had he ever done so. But it's OK for this President to go after individuals and have his minions slime them freely. Oh yeah, I forgot.... that's the "Chicago Way". I don't care what it's called, it's descending to a new low in national politics, and it should disgust every American of any Party or no Party. --Del)

Shortfall in California’s Budget Swells to $16 Billion
Excerpt: The state budget shortfall in California has increased dramatically in the last six months, forcing state officials to assemble a series of new spending cuts that are likely to mean further reductions to schools, health care and other social programs already battered by nearly five years of budget retrenchment, state officials announced on Saturday.

Calif. students rank 47th in science
Excerpt: About 22 percent of California's eighth-graders tested on a national science test passed, ranking the Golden State among the worst in the nation, according to figures released Thursday. Scores from the 2012 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation's Report Card, show that too few students have the skills that could lead to careers in the field, educators said. (I am sure this nothing to do with mandatory bilingual education requirements. --Chris)

DHS Whistleblower: Obama to Commit ‘Reichstag’ Event to Enact Martial Law
Excerpt: The Obama agents, through the DHS and other assorted colluders, are plotting a major ‘Reichstag’ event to generate racial riots and produce the justification for martial law, delaying the November 2012 elections, possibly indefinitely, a DHS whistleblower informed the Canada Free Press on Tuesday. (I think this is way over the top. I hope. ~Bob.)

OSU video, according to the e-mail

Excerpt: It's a memo circulated by Jan van Lohuizen, a highly respected Republican pollster, (he polled for George W. Bush in 2004), to various leading Republican operatives, candidates and insiders. It's on the fast-shifting poll data on marriage equality and gay rights in general, and how that should affect Republican policy and language. And the pollster's conclusion is clear: if the GOP keeps up its current rhetoric and positions on gays and lesbians, it is in danger of marginalizing itself to irrelevance or worse. (Romney would gain no votes now by switching on this, would lose social conservatives. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: A senior Taliban commander has issued a scathing statement about the death of Maluvi Mohammad Ismail, the former Deputy Military Council Chairman for the Taliban's Quetta Shura, who was reportedly killed in Taliban infighting last month. Mullah Ghulam Hassan, a senior Taliban commander once based in Ghazni province and a close ally of Ismail, blamed Afghan, Pakistani, and American intelligence agencies for creating divisions among the Taliban.

Sweden's Reputation As A Welfare State Is In Trouble
Economics: The president has been accused of seeking to turn the U.S. into an Americanized Western European welfare state. If he insists on imitating one particular model, we suggest he follow the Swedish paradigm. Sweden has a reputation as the prototypical cradle-to-grave socialist European nation, and the political left has long yearned for America to be more like the Scandinavian nation. But it's looking through a smudged window. With little notice, Sweden has changed. (Now this is really, really interesting! It seems the Swedes have been quietly moving away from being the super-socialist nation and directly towards what we would call a more realistic (conservative?) way of governing. The three definitions that we need to always keep in mind: STUPIDITY- making mistakes, suffering penalties, learning nothing. COMMON SENSE- making mistakes, suffering penalties, learning something. INTELLIGENCE- observing others' mistakes, witnessing penalties, learning something. The Swedes at least have common sense. And their example gives us a chance to exercise intelligence. --Del)

One-World Globalism Run Amuck – Dick Morris TV: History Video!
Excerpt: In this History video commentary, I discuss how Obama is implementing the one-world utopian vision of leftists throughout the world. From the pages of our new book Screwed!, I explain how he is whittling away American sovereignty and creating new global bodies to replace Congress and the President himself.

Pelosi avoids Fast and Furious, fails to vote with Democrats demanding accountability
Excerpt: 142 House Democrats — including Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz — voted in favor of Chaffetz’s amendment that prevents the Department of Justice from using taxpayer funds to lie to Congress. Another 41 Democrats voted against it, and there were a few members from both parties who abstained from voting. One of those members who abstained from voting was Pelosi…(Wonder if those 41 were the Dems Allen West was mentioning. --Barb.)

Egyptian Cleric Safwat Higazi: Muslim Brotherhood Presidential Candidate Will Liberate Jerusalem
Carter abandons the Shah, then Obama abandons Mubarak, and this is what you get. Obama is also abandoning Israel, which is why they are on their own in precluding Iran from developing nuclear weapons. --GBH.

The ‘fatwa’ follies: Iran plays Team O for suckers. By Amir Taheri
Excerpt: Somewhere deep in the State Department, experts are hard at work putting the final touches on the Obama administration’s strategy for the forthcoming talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Their deliberations center on the meaning of a fatwa supposedly issued in 2005 by Iran’s “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenei. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said a full interpretation of the fatwa could have a major bearing on the outcome of the talks, set for May 23-24 in Baghdad. Some explanation is required to understand how comical this is.

DOJ’s ‘Proof’ of Sheriff Joe’s ‘Racial Discrimination’ is Photo of a Chihuahua? Seriously?
Excerpt: If you needed a symbol of the utterly preposterous lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his Maricopa County Sheriffs Department (MCSO), this may well be it.
